      I actually don't mind Nagash's old model tbh, so for me butterfly lady wins because that was a nice transformation and saved it. Gabs' face is definitely better but tbh it's actually not really salvage able. The orc cheerleader is hilarious and I like it for that reason. XD

      there is a remake of Ariel in Total war 2 which I think is pretty good in therms of fidelity with the original, but without being goofy as hell. Nagash has a new tabletop model tho, it looks pretty sick.

    i can relate to the nagash/gary story. as a graphic designer we are asked a lot to provide 3+ options for the client to choose from. And if you put up an option that is shit thinking they'll pick the better ones... well, lets just say odds-on they'll pick the crap one. It really is amazing how often it would happen (or they want a frankenstein version combining elements from each). It got so bad that now as a veteran I refuse to put forward any option that I'm not proud of, lest this happen. If that means you only get 2 options, then so be it.

    '98 or '99 a friend paid me $50 to paint Nagash for him. I went with a red colour scheme too, and although not being anywhere near as good a painter as you are, a basic and careful paint job with a decent colour scheme IMMEDIATELY improves the appearance of that model so damn much.
    Thanks for bringing back fond memories =)

    I feel like Nagash came out the best here. With a paint job like that, the model legitimately looks great.

  • @nambnb
    @nambnb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I think the whole history about those miniatures was very interesting, particularly why the sculpts look the way they do.
    As for the paintjobs, in case you want my two cents (if not please ignore the following wall of text): I think it's great that you didn't give the Orc cheerleader so much make-up (like in the comparison picture), as that seems to make her look like a parody compared to the more natural look you gave her. The female space marine looks great, too. Nagash's colors are a little tame for my personal taste (since there is so much silver in his skull hat that is only separated by the golden headband before there is even more silver surface visible in his face), but I like the green glow effect. As for Ariel... it's not for me. Not that it matters, but I think it's a little sad that her wings weren't painted closer towards that of an actual bue butterfly (e. g. the Menelaus blue morpho whose female butterflies have nice black contrasts on the outside of their wings, even though the wing shape is different from the mini). Also since the dress (large surface) was painted red it clashed with the blue of her wings (even larger surface) and was not really united with the tiny purple glow part on her staff. Since all the colors are so isolated and don't appear somewhere else (e. g. purple accents on her dress or maybe her wings) it didn't bring the color concept together. And for some reason it appears that the color of her hair looks flat (is it the light?). I do like the base's design a lot, though, and her skin is great (esp. the 3D-effect/shadowing/lighting).
    All those things aside, I like that you gave those old mini designs a new spin.

      @FlourescentPotato 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's amazing how new painting techniques have changed minis over the years! Back in the 80s when we had DnD minis they'd be weird plastic things with a slap of mostly one colour of paint but the Warhammer minis always seemed so amazingly detailed which your new painting really reveals! I love them!

    Massive fan of all the content. I find the precision and execution of the work so relaxing. I also had an idea for a video. Pick a discontinued/out of date mini of a WH character, or a character from lore that is yet to have its own mini and have a competition who could make the best version of their respective choice. A good example might be Huron Blackheart.

    • @chronotub1528
      @chronotub1528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were originally sculpted as Space Marines, though not released as them.

    • @Gogsnik
      @Gogsnik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chronotub1528 The only "evidence" for this is an alledged reply from Alan Merrett in a facebook conversation that no-longer exists. Much more recently he made a comment saying that, with regards to female space marines, "the canonical position was that such entities did not exist in the 40k universe!" In that same comment he confirms that Sister Sin ("warrior nun" as he puts it) was the inspiration for the Sisters of Battle, confirming that Sister Sin is/was a Sister of Battle.
      If you look at that artwork, and compare it to Jayne and Gabs, you will see the same style of armour, the same rebreather apparatus and the same horned skull symbol on the left shoulder pad, and, additionally, they have sister on their base tags, unlike space marine miniatures, which say, funnily enough, space marine. If we are going to speculate over what Jayne and Gabs might have supposed to have been, if not adventurers, then they are demonstrably, Sisters of Battle.

    • @chronotub1528
      @chronotub1528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gogsnik the post is well documented, if the only evidence that they were sculpted as female space marines is that the head of design at the time said they were sculpted as female space marines then I consider that pretty good evidence. That female space marines aren't cannon is beside the point, no one says they were. Just that the idea was floating around in the mind of at least one GW designer, who then sculpted some models which sat in the reject drawer for a while until they needed something to put out, at which point they were released as female adventures.
      As for the sister sin comparison, yeah it's quite possible she was the inspiration. And yeah, Sister Sin is presented as sister of battle, it litterally has a blurb about the Adepta Sororitas next to her picture in Rogue Trader.
      Though if she was developed into the sisters it does raise the question of what she was originally drawn as?Given the comparisons to the Adepta Sororitas and space marines in the Rogue Trader Rulebook it makes sense to me that the idea of female Space Marines may itself have developed into the Sisters of Battle. Just my speculation.
      As for the armour, it looks pretty space mariny to me, it looks more like the classic image of a 1st Ed marine than some of the actual 1st ed marines, also the skull on the shoulder pads was used on marines from the era. I have a librarian with it.

    My opinion: no one can - but he polished that turd real good!

    Well, GW was never known for female faces and RT had a really grimdark and deep Battletech aesthetic ugly going on at that time which I love than and still do now. I like that cartoony sort of heavy metal animation look, like really bad rotoscoping too, the roughness is what gives it the flavor.

    Such a cool video. First it hurts to see you use your talents wasted on such sculpts, but then your new paintjobs on them make them look really nice! Really enjoyed the history of the models too!

    The bare metal on the minis' backsides hurts my soul...

    I have never played Warhammer: 40,000. I just subscribe because I like you personality and style. That being said...I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU PAINTING ACTUALLY WARHAMMER MINIATURES. ❤❤ NAGASH AND ARIEL!!! Wow! I really miss the game. Since the implosion of Warhammer in 2015, I sold 6 different 3000 point armies and decided to focus solely on Blood Bowl. Wait! You're painting an Orc cheerleader too! This is my dream day on Squidmar Miniatures.

    Iv got plenty of OOP metal minis including a box of Legion of the Damned - actually scared to paint them afraid i wont do them justice. Quite happy to send some of these minis across to you if you wanna give them a go? I can send pics if you want?

    I think I still have my Nagash somewhere
    And just managed to buy one of Gabs for the lulz
    Think I'm gonna use her in my 30K legion too muhahaha
    I love all these old models, even if they are "ugly"
    I've actually got 9 of the old Cobra Terminators too which I'm going to use, having kitbashed them with later terminator arms for chainfists, stormbolters and assault cannons - they'll become an Indomitus squad.

    In the last one pattern on the wings looks like thunderbolt, this could also improve the look of the figure. Of course all you did looks way better than original anyway ;) Nagash for me no.1!

    Nagash looks the best in the end, but I think Gabs had the most improvement.

    Wow Nagash has really grown over the years, he is so much bigger in the current version. Still the old metal model looked rather good I think, and I think he would look good in an army today but not as Nagash perhaps. All four looked much better after you painted them than the old box art :-)

    I really love the old minis. I personally won eBay listing for the original Eldar Avatar who is shorter than todays guardians and the 2 different Eldar Ghost Warriors.

    Damn that nagash!
    I'm starting to think the box art was the real culprit here... You really fixed the face which I think has always been the main weirdness about that mini.

    Thank you for adding a Blood Bowl miniature - even if it is sidestaff - from the best tabletop boardgame of all time.

    shut up, that old Nagash is epic! Those internet people don't know what they are talking about! To me, Nagash will always be a cool dude dressed in purple with a pimp cane. Few modern models even come close to being on his level.
