yes, that's right, but what about the infrastructure? The tanks, irrigation, motor(s), and another greenhouse - which also involve cost and additional knowledge. If she knew she was staying, investing in more food production possibilities would be doable. Unfortunately, getting permanent accessible land within a city is a barrier for many who want to do something similar. Hopefully something more permanent will come about & she'll have a chance to consider aquaponics - which is a great idea!
Truly inspiring! and it looks a lot like the allotment garden that I haveaccess to here in Oslo. It is 100% organic, my piece of land is probably around 22 square meters, and it is an oasis in spring ,summer and fall. This year I had radishes, carrots, red beets, roman kale, swiss chard, pumpkins and some spinach. Check out "Oslo urban farming" for videos. Greetings from Oslo, Norway.
I do think adding aquaponics could be a good idea - many restaurants (and individuals) are looking for good local sources for fish - but with a year-to-year lease this might not be too practical for this farmer.
That's a good looking garden, pitch the idea to your local authorities, it's gotta be better then letting derelict sections get all weedy and let the landlords have some free food, thats what people used to do when i was a kid, Their land got looked after and they got food until they wanted to do something with it
Has anyone watch "Food Choices" on Netflix? If many people watch that video, seeing what everyone is doing to their health and our environment, and maybe more will change to a healthy lifestyle. Especially, the plant-based lifestyle, then we will need more urban farmers! ;)
Wean Mullinder There are still cities here that won't allow such a use of land, but many are changing their laws. Last fall, in San Francisco, they began offering tax breaks to land owners (with empty lots) that allowed food to be grown. More here: www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/09/09/347141038/tax-breaks-may-turn-san-franciscos-vacant-lots-into-urban-farms As the need arises, maybe laws will change in your area too.
sadly there's no chance here. You even need planning permission to erect a garden shed ! There have been instances of people building outbuildings without permission an they have been bulldozed !Love your videos.

Cucumbers? Profit? Honesty? Sad... about your communication style, no doubt Canadian influence?(??) "We sold some cucumbers today?" I wish you could somehow change the syntac of your voice inflections, because you are right on with what you are doing!
oops I should also say... English is the global language, and English voice-inflections are part of understanding the language. Just so you know, any sentence that has voice inflections of a 'question' confuse multi-nationals who are learning English. I realize this is not part of your world... just sayin'. Love your work!
I've noticed this for a long time as well. It's usually attached to hipster types with irony and pretense so intwined with their core that they just can't help it. Nothing is concrete, solid, that's why it's accompanied with verbal absolutes like "honestly" and "absolutely" and "for sure" etc. etc. It's about a totally subjective way of looking at the world.
Sadly a lot of local governments make it more difficult for things like this to succeed. The Pacific Northwest is a lot more friendly to these types of things than most other places, like NEW YORK CITY! No! We need $$$$!

Here in UK that wouldn't be allowed, sadly. We need all sorts of permission from local councils, insurances etc., and it's usually refused.
