Missing one key step... after pouring the ballast, take the brush handle and tap along the track to settle it in place around the ties prior to shaping. Otherwise, great info, especially with the "wet" water... diluted isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is also an excellent wetting agent, if you don't mind the slight smell.
My way of gluing goes "glue is cheap, time is expensive"
