Hello!! Today we are going to talk about How to put Muzzle on dog.
The main reason why people need the muzzle because of biting issue and we need to put it in on to stop the problem.
But most people will introduce this object to the dog wrong way, which is put it on the dog face right away. They will feel trap and can cause stress.
So by putting muzzle on. You can make dog become more aggressive. So... How should we put in on the dog and make them feel calm and relax.
Make them feel like this is part of they body feel like just another collar and they don't have to feel stress everytime you put it on.
You can use the leather one like this metal one or black fabric wrap around dog's mouth.
In my personal opinion. I recommend you to use one that look like this. Because inside will have space for the dog to open the mouth and it will not be too tight. The tightness and put it in the wrong way and introduce the object in the wrong way. All of this will make your dog feel more stress. So the more space they have the better it is. Because they can bark or bite if they want. But the bite will not touch your body. This part of the muzzle will help protect you.
Most dog when they see this kind of object they will move their head away. So if you just put your dog's mouth in it. High chance that your dog will feel stress So the easiest way to put it on dog is use food with strong smell. Becuase we want to use the smell to lure the dog to put their nose or mouth in this object themself.
This is how it work food with strong smell. I normally use liver but peanut butter will also work too. Because they are a bit creamy so mash it with your finger then smear some from here just to lure the dog to smell it, when they start to lick it then you can slowly move the spot until the tip of the muzzle. From here smear the creamt liver as much as you can so longer your dog spend time in here the longer this muzzle will stay in their mouth.
When the dog put it's head in do not lock the belt right away. You should put it in and out first Take it out then give him food as a reward then put it back in again. We want the dog to understand that when muzzle in his head it will not ALWAYS lock so it don't feel trap. This way dog will feel less stress.
Our today guest is one of my student. He come with aggressive issue. His name is Khao Poad I will show you how to put this muzzle on him and make sure he will not bite me. Let's hope that's all my 10 fingers will survive until the rehabilitate course finish.
First we will use the liver smear it so become more creamy then put it here. The smell will lure the dog in. Don't worry if your dog didn't put his nose in on the first attemp. For them this item is something that is new. That's why we will use some liver from the outside to lure them then move it closer so it will slowly coming in. Let them have some smell first will be a good start.
OK!! let's go and try with Khao Poad put the liver here right on the front so he can put his nose closer. Once the dog start to put the nose in then we will put more liver in deepeer so the dog will have to try to put the nose inside this object more. We will not force the dog to put their face in.
When the dog put his head in then we must respect the rule which is not to lock it right away. But rather put it in and out for a few time until the dog feel more comfortable with the object. No feel stress toward this object. To make it even better you can give more liver and give it to him while he have muzzle on.
When he get use to it then it's time to lock the muzzle. The correct way is not too tight and not too loose with relax and calm.
Make sure your dog is not drooling or shut the mouth tight or growling. If none of this happen then you do it correctly. The dog feel more comfortable with this object inside also have liver smell make him more relax. Remember to not put the muzzle on for 24 hours.
That's it. Very easy so next time when you buy dog's muzzle make sure you put it in correctly so the dog will not get stress.
This traing is very important. Imagine if they have to visit the vet. Sometime Vet have to put muzzle on when they give injection or draw some blood. Your dog will not get too stress then no problem with the vet or biting other people when they try to put muzzle on.
