USA's Robert Finke won the men's 1500m freestyle for his second Tokyo 2020 gold.
After winning the 800m freestyle gold, Finke added the 1500m title to his name, with Ukraine's Mykhailo Romanchuk second and Germany's Florian Wellbrock winning bronze.
The 10th gold for USA swimmers at Tokyo 2020 was - fittingly - one of the most exciting races, as Finke finished first in 14:39.65, followed home by silver medallist, Mykhailo Romanchuk in 14:40.66. Special mention must go to Florian Wellbrock of Germany, who led until the final 50m when Finke showed his class to take the win that makes him a double Olympic gold medallist.

Finke's final 50m split of 25.78 in the 1500m was faster than the final 50m of all the swimmers in the 200m at these games.

possibly because the 200m is the event that uses the lactic acid energy system the most, hence the muscles are filled with lactic acid at the end. In the 1500m, it is predominantly the aerobic system being used until the last 100 or 50m hence finke can push harder

Finke's last turn... you could see his kick just EXPLODE. I used to race the mile (at nowhere near this level, obviously) and even as a distance specialist, that last 200 is miserable. His patience to hold enough back to do that is insane, I would probably break earlier out of nerves

1 year later and Finke dropped 2.95 seconds from this time (14:36.70). If he keeps improving at that rate, he will challenge the world record by Paris 2024. Although I'm American, I'm actually rooting for Paltrinieri who's been within 2 seconds of the world record on 2 occasions now (won this year's worlds with a 14:32.80) to break that world record finally. Anyway, the 2024 Paris Olympics will be exciting.
