    My absolute favorite watercolor paper is Arches 300lb (640gsm) paper - either cold or hot press depending on what I am painting. Not that I can afford it often, but it is my favorite. Next favorite is Arches 140lb. Again, it is a bit pricey. For practice or more everyday use, I’ve been enjoying the Bee Company 100% cotton 140lb paper. Also on the less expensive end like the Fluid watercolor blocks, though they do still buckle. I’ve been wanting to try the Fabriano Studio paper...so may check that out. I have a Strathmore 500 series 100% cotton mixed media journal (which according to the label is internally sized) I have been using as a “practice” journal to work on water control, flat washes, some gradations and as a place to use paints as a way to “clean my palette” rather than just wiping it away when I’m done with my painting or color swatch/tests. It’s not meant for heavy wet in wet work...but for light washes it works and when I’ve filled it up with my squares and random shapes, plan to go back and use pen, ink, and other media over the watercolor as a mixed media journal.

      Saunders Waterford 425gsm never buckles and its the most expensive paper I can afford for proper paintings. Somehow I find Arches to be very dry, almost coarse to the touch. Feels like fine sandpaper to the brush at first. Langton by DR also performs well. Would like to try the Bee paper, but it is not so easy to get hold of here in Norway. US shipping has gone up enormously the last few years. For sketching I am not very choosy, but the Pentalic is a favourite.

      Trond Birkeland I’m in the US - so the Bee paper is one I can easily get at my local craft store. With a coupon? 25 sheets of 6x9” ends up being just over $8 US. I also live near a university that has a strong fine arts program, the bookstores that serve the university have good art supply sections that cater to student budgets...I can usually get a decent paper selection at slightly below retail prices - but it depends on what the professors request for their students. Arches? I can get in 90lb, 140lb, and 300lb in hot, cold, or rough. Canson? Most of the same. But...anything else? That I’d have to drive an hour or more to get to the nearest actual art supply store...now, the fact that store is a Blick...sometimes the trip is worth it.

    A really interesting video Teoh! I really like Winsor & Newton's 100% cotton cold press paper which I buy in large sheets and tear down into the size I want. I have noticed a big difference between it and Fabriano Artistico. As I'm in Italy Fabriano costs less but the quality of it just isn't as good as W&N. I also like Arches but it's become too expensive in the past year or so here.

    Hi Teoh, thank you for another informative video! You are my favorite artist on TH-cam. I would love to see you do a comparison of more 100% cotton watercolor paper brands and types. I just bought 3 different brands to test myself, trying to save a bit of money rather than buy Arches for everything I do - especially since I'm just a beginner. But I won't buy non-100% cotton paper anymore (except for journals). It's terrible to try to learn on bad paper.
    I've primarily been using Fabriano 100% cotton watercolor blocks but I find their glue application is frequently messy, which can lead to damage to the paper when removing. Also, the paper buckles more than I think it should.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brands to check out for 100% cotton watercolour paper are Arches, Fabriano, Lanaquarelle, Stonehenge, Saunders Waterford. To cut the paper from the glue bound edges, I use a credit card to slide in between the paper. Anyway, you can check out more reviews for the papers at Dick Blick. I don't have many paper reviews on my blog.

    Teoh, thank you sooooo much! I've been using Strathmore's Visual Journal to practice in for some time now before I use the professional watercolor paper. I've considered using a 120 gsm cotton paper writing journal but found myself hesitant not knowing why. I purchased Arches hot and cold press paper as well as Strathmore's 500 hot pressed paper. Based on your informative video, I will not buy the leather writing journal to use as a watercolor journal and I think the Strathmore 500 paper will become my practice paper while Arches will be my paper of choice for projects. Thanks again!

      For writing paper 100% cotton isn't necessary. The Strathmore writing paper that I used in this video has 25% cotton and it really feels premium.

I have heard a lot of good about the Khadi paper, but find that some sheets (in a sketchbook) are extremely dry, but take forever to dry once wet. Thanks for good tips! Will be looking out for the sizing liquid. Holbein products are not that easily available here in Norway, but that liquid is exactly what I was hoping for. Probably intended for patches/faults in more expensive papers, but could probably make some sketchbooks easier to deal with. I have a small pot of DS Watercolour ground which is excellent for correcting annoying mistakes in paintings. I have tried it on a canvas, but it does not work exactly like paper on larger surfaces. Would probably be uneconomic to coat entire sketchbooks in it, though. Maybe brilliant for preparing pages for gouache...

    Surprisingly, I think my Bristol board is better for blending than my aquafine paper. My paper weight is much higher than your Bristol though. Getting smooth strokes on aquafine is hard, if I don’t prep it the water just pools on the surface. And blending in small areas always leads to cauliflowers, which is frustrating. Aquafine paper is better if I’m fine with hard edges and want to work wet for longer times.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if that's a market for that. If someone buys paper that does not have sizing, that person will not buy from that brand again. So the people who actually have paper sizing problems is very limited.

    I understand sizing makes a huge difference, but being vegan, I would prefer to use comparatively poor performing Canson, Strathmore(except 500 series) and Fabriano(except Secolo XIII, Romo, Esportazione) instead of Arches paper(which very clearly uses gelatin). Is there something we can do to create the effect of sizing using agar agar or any similar compound at home? Thanks for the information, it cleared a lot of things up for me.

      I totally get you. I'm not comfortable using animal products in my art supplies either, if I can help it.
      This list of vegan art supplies (doublecheckvegan.com/vegan-art-supplies) shows the following vegan-friendly papers: all of Strathmore's, except their 500 Series Gemini Watercolor paper; all of Fabriano's, except Secolo XIII, Romo, and Esportazione; Canson's Heritage and Montval watercolor papers; and Stonehenge Aqua Watercolor Paper.
      I don't know of any vegan sizing material that's suitable for watercolors (I know it exists for oil painting). I do know, however, that Golden's Absorbent Ground is vegan. Golden's website says it needs to be used "over a porous or 'toothy' surface" to stick. It specifically says it can be used on watercolor paper (I'm assuming rough and cold press only), but if mixed media paper has some tooth, then I'm assuming it can be used on that as well.
      Hope that helps! :)
