The ruins of Waldeck Castle near the town of Calw in Germany's Northern Black Forest, dating back to the 12th century, present a mysterious site. Perched on a mountain spur high above the river Nagold valley, this place harbors an array of curious artifacts spanning approximately 500 meters along a narrow ridge with steep slopes to the left and to the right. Artifacts that are sparking questions which may challenge the historical narrative of the lords of the castle being the first settlers up there.

This mountain spur was settled very early on. There are traces of Celtic settlements everywhere along the ridges of the Nagold Valley. With the decline of the nobility and the social changes in the Middle Ages, Waldeck Castle, like many other castles, lost its strategic importance. Archaeological evidence has shown that there were four different castle complexes on the entire mountain spur, which date back to the early Middle Ages.
