Yay! Thanks so much for watching Clerks. Kevin Smith was able to make this movie with his friends for only $27,500. He’s been living the dream ever since.
I'm not sure if you can still buy it but their is a graphic novel called Clerks the comic books that continues the story of the first clerks movie. Their is also another graphic novel called Chasing Dogma it's basically Jay And Silent Bob strike back but it connects what happened after Mallrats to the beginning of Dogma.
It's black and white because that's all they could afford. The Director and Producer paid for this movie on credit cards. Kevin Smith was working at that market and filming there at night. This movie is one of the great indy success stories.
The film was shot in 21 days (with two "pick-up" days). The Quick Stop convenience store, located at 58 Leonard Avenue in Leonardo, New Jersey, where Smith worked, was the primary setting for the film. This was the epitome of an independent film, really a student film made on a shoestring budget and a prayer.
I love all three Clerks films!! Clerks 2 is by far the funniest & most watchable for me. The third being the most controversial as it’s not loved by all, but, all are great in their own unique ways.
Agreed, it’s hard for me to pick a fav cause all three are so totally different vibes but I enjoy all of them in their own ways for what they each uniquely bring to the table
Kevin Smith is not only one of my favorite directors, but one of my favorite people. I can listen to that guy talk all day (and he will). Ironic because he is Silent Bob.
There's an alternative, deleted, ending that's controversial. Also, the scene with the casket was animated, so you get to see what exactly happened in there (definitely worth watching).
Fun insight on video stores! I'm in my 50's and remember spending an hour wandering around a vid store. I remember watching them all go down one at a time. A different era. :)
This is about as indie as it gets. Fresh out of film school. Had to sell his comic collection and get family loans to pay for it. Couldn't even afford color film.
Not even “fresh out of film school”. He quit before finishing. Fresher than fresh. But he did meet producer Scott Mosier and cinematographer Dave Klein.
I have loved this movie for more than a decade, but once I started working in a DVD store about 3 years ago, this went from being a funny comedy, to one of the most truthful depictions of life.
Little kids buying cigarettes was an all day, every day thing throughout the '80s where I lived, and still not unheard of when this movie came out. None of the parents in my neighborhood could be bothered to get their own cigarettes.
true.... my older brother used to send me down to the corner store { had a cigarette vending machine - like $1.80 / $2.00 in 1988... I was 12/13 years old around then ... I got to keep the other $2 - $3 for food / candy }
So unexpected man, you come in clutch every time brotha. This is such a classic comedy film. It's definitely one of my favorites especially the 2nd one it's even raunchier 😂😂 you'll see lol
Probably best he didn't go with the "alternate" or "full" ending. Small amount of footage would have taken this from a slice of life comedy to a much darker place. It makes sense with the student film aspect of it but I wonder if it would have resonated the same with the masses into Smiths future. If you're curious I'm sure you can find the alternate ending somewhere. It's a bonus feature on the disk. There was also a pretty funny animated Clerks show with the same actors but it was short lived as it belonged 10 years in the future on Adult Swim not freakin ABC. Too spicy for 90s network Tv sadly.
I hope you continue the Kevin Smith movies, and watch them all in order. Clerks 2 and 3 aren't as effective without watching everything else in between
Primate! My friend, you are in for a WONDERFUL journey down this rabbit hole. I haven't read other comments yet, (and I'm still at the beginning of the video)... but in case no one has mentioned it yet, it's best to go through these in release order (shown below). You'll notice two of the recurring characters (Jay and Silent Bob) had a cameo in the movie "Grandma's Boy". There are some related "cartoon" movies/shows but I'm not sure if they are actually good, or even related to the movies except for having character names involved. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks III.
Man, I used to close at Midnight and Open at 10am in college. A mixed store in Savannah GA [ aka 'Home Run Video' ]... primarily VHS Rentals (+adult), Comic Books (+w subscriptions), and Magazines (normal + high end) sales. I did get to wait on Kevin Spacey, Joie /Joy & August(us) Coppola [Nick Cage's parents], and random other actors. But mostly locals ( of which some were infamous... see 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' - directed by Clint Eastwood... fun times ).
Also, I am from NJ originally [ before living in FL, GA, NJ {again} RI, MA, NY {upstate} ]... lol, and my co-worker {NJ} from 1997-1999 { 'R' who used to date my older brother } is friends with Dante / Brian { she has been in local plays with him }. Closest I got to those people is visiting the comic shop a few times in Red Bank, NJ { grew up around / worked in RB... used to buy comics at the RB mini-mall.. next to the diner, Elsie's subs, the Monarch thrift store, and Count Basie Theatre }
The whole View Askewniverse is good watching. After this, they go: - Mallrats - Chasing Amy - Dogma - Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Clerks 2 - Jay and Silent Bob Reboot - Clerks 3 I haven't seen those last two, but the rest are great.
When this film came out it let so many people realize they could become film makers. Including me. Probably my favorite movie of all time from a technical standpoint. Screw Marvell, they actually have money. This is what a film REALLY is. Do it for passion. Not seat filling algorithms.
That got me thinking about how random gas prices are. In April 2020, oil became far, far less than worthless. The price of gas only dropped 3 or 4 percent where I was, at its lowest.
I REALLY hope you watch the sequels 😄 they're both great (funnier too actually) and the others are must watches too (jay & silent bob movies, mallrats etc)
View askew universe watch it. Next film is Mallrats and it takes place on the same day as Clerks. They make references to things that were happening in their town.
Mallrats is a day or two before clerks. One, Jay and Silent Bob can't be in two places at the same time. Two, Dante and Randal go to the funeral for the girl who died a day before Mallrats takes place. Timeline: Julie, Dante's ex GF, dies. The next day, TS's GF Brandi has to step into the dating show for her. Presumably the next day, or more likely two days later, Dante and Randal crash the wake for Julie in Clerks.
@@mgordon1100 you're right Mallrats has to take place before Clerks. Do the rest of the movies go in chronological order when they were released? Pretty sure Chasing Amy was a few years after Clerks and Dogma is immediately after Chasing Amy.
@@NathanClarkNateMan010276 You are correct. At the end of Jay and Silent Bob's scene in Chasing Amy, Jay mentions that they are going to Chicago. That's Dogma. While the comic book was never discussed in Dogma, presumably Banky made the movie deal during this time, which leads us into Strikes Back. Clerks II is pretty much Dante's own story with little references, but it's clearly the next chronologically because Jay and Silent Bob save the Quick Stop with their movie royalty money. The final two movies also are chronological. Their ages show this, with the inclusion of Jay's and Boo Boo Kitty Fcks daughter (Reboot). Then the final movie Clerks III is the closure to the whole universe.
Isaiah i have to believe some of those independent contractors were forced to work on the 2d death star because I heard in ww2 some of the Germans were forced to do what they did
It you want to enjoy another raunchy "guy film", watch "BEERFEST" (2006). Two brothers go to Octoberfest in Munich to defend their family's honor.....by way of competing in a secret BEER drinking contest! Great Stuff!
say what you want but in observable reality most men prefer a woman who didn't reach level 37. btw you prefer clerks 2 over the first one? (I saw your other comment here)
I'm not even suppose to derp de der. Dante may be the most obnoxious protagonist in a movie. I like this movie. If he weren't such a cry baby, I may have loved it.

@Itsaprematee Though it's a minor thing I think at the beginning of the movie the character Dante drank something like carnation breakfast drink mix.

As an ex-Blockbuster employee who was there at the end, we appreciate you. Working there pre-DISH was actually pretty fkin awesome.

It's been years since I've seen "Clerks 2". I plan to rewatch it someday. "Clerks 3" actually made me shed a tear.

Don't just jump into Clerks 2. You gotta watch all of the View Askewniverse in order to get the references. Next up are Dogma and Chasing Amy.
