- When: Tuesday, June 11 at 6 p.m.
Moderator: Caroline Ballard is KUER’s Assistant News Director. She oversees daily news coverage and is the Executive Producer for their politics podcast State Street.
Recorded 06/11/2024. This debate features candidates for Utah's Gubernatorial seat. It includes Republican candidates Spencer Cox and Phil Lyman. The debate is held from the PBS Utah studio on The University of Utah Campus. The Utah Debate Commission will be watching the live comments. If you type in a question, it may be asked during the debate.
Lyman doesn't talk like a politician. He talks like a free-market businessman. I appreciate his answers on housing, water, abortion, the bottom-up approach and more. I feel like Governor Cox is reasonable and I agree with many of his positions, but my priorities align more with those of Phil Lyman. He has my vote and I hope he gets a chance to take charge.
Cox is a snake don't be charmed. One technique lawyers use is the "this but not this" technique to convince you they're reasonable. By saying "not this" to a ridiculous position it helps them convince you their psychopathic behavior is ok
One guy seems to think that government is the answer, one guy seems to think government is the problem.
Bottom line for sure!!! Lyman for Governor!!
Correct. Stop unlawful migrants. They are NOT WELCOME HERE. Support Lyman.
@@annettegibbonsi don't know I could see Spencer cox being president after trump he's far from being a RINO
@@RgjBthat's sarcasm right? I just wanna double check.
Cause uh.... he's basically the blue-est red state governor in the union. Even Tucker did a piece on that.
Lyman for Governor!!!
Agreed. Most importantly, Lyman wants to STOP the illegal immigration. Put your support 100% behind Lyman.
Man… this is so much more important than the presidential debates and only 4.7k views? Come on Utah!!
People need to get more involved in local politics period. But this has been the big change in the republican party. People that have been sitting on the sidelines are sick of it. Getting involved and participating.
Utahns have to work so hard for a living under Bidenomics nobody has time or energy to watch debates
It’s election time, and MANY had other obligations, but recorded it, and watched later ( like me)! Some did group watch parties so while it’s registered as one, many were actually viewing.
Less than 4% actually vote
Yeah, people don't care enough about what happens in their backyard. And it leaves room for Naivety, abuse, and corruption
PHIL LYMAN FOR GOVERNOR!
They asked my public land question!! Cox sorta lied. He said he is defending access with lawsuits to protect Utah. Why are we getting literally 1000s of miles of roads and trails closed in Utah under his watch? It is way harder to get back than to stop it happening. The BLM and NFS are out of control closing things this year. Utah literally just needs to say no. It is that easy. You have your super cool Overland rig and like to travel those backroads to some far off canyon? You have that sweet 200k sprinter van and want to see the wilds of Utah on some far off dirt road? You hunt or dirtbike? You better be asking these questions about public land and voting knowing who will defend public land access. The BLM does not read your comments. The NFS has like 4 rangers on patrol in Utah. We need to just say no, otherwise we will be like CA with a year long reserve America reservation system and get to camp in an organized campground with 100 other families and their screaming kids10 ft from your window.
Are you aware that Phil Lyman was arrested for defending public access to federal lands? He has been a long time fighter against the federal overreach in our state.
Cox is the worst.
HATE him!!
I was very impressed with Lyman, Cox is wired as hell and looks like he’s on drugs.
There's something very offputting and disingenuous about Cox.
Cox felt pretty creepy.
I noticed that too.
First thing i noticed haha
Cox is a smooth talker until he gets at all frazzled. The best one was when Jason Preston asked him about "smart cities and the WEF" Cox blew a gasket.
Go Phil Lyman🎉
My observations:
1- Cox looked like he was on drugs.
2- Cox demonstrated that he can talk his way around an answer, Lyman acknowledged each problem and barreled right through.
3- cox said "look" about 13 times. You cant make me "look" no matter how many self empowerment books you read. Im here to decide on governor, not follow orders.
4. Lyman seemed like a real person with incredible experience in bottom up governing. Cox seemed like a used car salesman trying to sell government expansion to us like we are idiots.
I wasnt decided until tonight but after seeing pasty boy make a fool out of himself, im definitely voting for lyman.
Is Cox on uppers? Good grief. Take it down a notch, dude!
Lyman is freaking amazing!
Cox was jacked up on something, that's for sure. I am thinking a fist full of caffeine pills.
😂😂😂
He has always been like that! I don’t know how he ever got voted into office!! Who the heck voted for him?? I never have voted for him….I never will vote for Cox!
He was selected, not elected.
@@annettegibbonsI voted for him last election. Boy was that a mistake
We need to get rid of Spencer (my pronouns are) Cox.
All 5 in voters in our home for Lyman!
Vote Lyman!!
Lyman is cool and collected.
Cox is all over the place. PANIC?
Cocain or uppers most likely. He always looks like this, it's crazy
After watching this it is clear cut who is the right man for the job. Lyman has a full understanding of how government is intended to operate and he expressed his concerns with how it is operating under its current administration. He understands the roles of local, county, state and federal governments. Instead of centralized power he understands what all these agencies responsibilities are. We desperately need to get back to what the system was intended to do
Cox idea of affordable starter homes is “move into our 15 minute city.”
But….but…there aren’t any “15 minute cities” (according to Cox as he put 2 fists on Jason Preston’s chest).
💯
You misspelled "Open air Prison"
Cox is so amazing at how easily he LIES 🤮
Lyman for Governor!
I am for Lyman.
Vote for a real Conservative!! Vote Phil Lyman!!!
Phil Lyman rocked it!! He has my vote
Lyman has my vote.
Voted! GOV LYMAN🙌🏼
Although the debate is good, I think that 4 years of Cox have been enough to know that we do not want him back. Go Lyman
Lyman for governor
Spencer Newsome sure is proud of a lot of things....Pride is the downfall of Nations.....and States.😊
Lyman for Gov!
Lyman crushed it! 1:35:48 I loved where he differentiated his bottom up approach from Cox's top down governance.
For the first time I’m seeing Lyman signs everywhere vs Cox hopefully this translates on Election Day.
Fortunately the loudest are not typically the majority.

True to Rainbow grifter form, He/ Him Cox is just so "Proud". The ultimate of all sins. No wonder this state is under God's judgement now.
Lyman aligns with biblical Truths. He has my vote.
Lyman merely speaks the truth about the things you do wrong, Governor Cox. I've not heard him say anything "negative" or disparaging. Nice try trying to paint him as a negative campaigner. When you're running against an incumbent, you have to say what can be done better!

Cox used taxpayer money for betterments and improvements on his own personal residence for security when a governor’s mansion is already provided by taxpayers.
Cox vetoed the bill that prevented boys from competing against our females in schools.
Cox is lieutenant governor Henderson contacted every clerk of the state advising them not to offer my team members public record. She is going through her second round of appeals. She lost the first time.
In the midst of a water crisis Cox contracted our saltwater brine for lithium extraction. He also contracted our southern Aquaphor. This forces our water into evaporation ponds for the extraction of a mineral that benefits China and Korea.
When Cox was lieutenant governor he had conferences on 15 minute cities and is in support of these types of cities that would reduce carbon emissions in our carbon footprint. It would also take our individual liberty to move freely across this land.
Coxes family business is in the telecoms industry. They are very much in support of smart cities, surveillance state.
Cox’s lieutenant governor along with Ricky Hatch have strong armed the legislator against voting for a good election integrity bills.

Lyman 2024
I am definitely voting for lyman. I don't like cox.
It will be my first time voting, so I am doing my research on the candidates, so far I have started to conclude that I will likely vote for Lyman.
Cox is so hyped up on uppers, he wore out the first translator.
The education issues addressed in Utah this year ABSOLUTELY were about UTAH problems. The student not being able to see that shows how out of touch he is with THOUSANDS upon thousands of parents and families here in our state.
Go Lyman! You’ve got my vote!
I had the opportunity to meet Phil Lyman at a Turning Point USA event, he told me he had served as a missionary with a relative of mine, he seems like a good man.
Caroline was great! These debates are excellent productions overall. Thank you! 🇺🇸
Love it Lyman!!
Mr Lyman, next time they ask you the question if the state of Utah abolish the income tax, you immediately start your answer with "YES." I saw you getting to it and she oddly cut you off so Cox face could steal the answer. We all know Cox face doesn't favor abolishing the income tax.
If think they were talking about sales tax on food. Either way, if Cox wanted to abolish it, he would have done it already. I Don’t believe him!
Great Job! Great moderator…. Goooooooooo - UTAH!
Cox said 79 percent excited about the Olympics. According to the news 49 percent wanted it. 30 percent sorta wanted it. I don’t call that 79 percent excited about it.
I’m a lifelong Utahn and I really want the Olympics. Wasn’t so sure for 2002 but it was an incredible experience and Utah did such a great job. I hope I live long enough to see it again.
@@sherylrobison1391 it’s fun. I actually have no preference. It was just his statement that was a little off.
LYMAN 4 UTAH!!!
Caffeinated Cox versus Laid-Back Lyman? Why was he so hyperactive? "No questions; that's awesome!" His level of professionality would make him a good camp counselor.
Except, I wouldn’t want him anywhere near my children.
Im at 24:01 - I wish that rebuttals were allowed in the "debate." But right now they're just answering questions, which is great, but this is the Debate Commission's opportunity to do a debate and they're not doing one. Bummer!
I was able to meet with Phil Lyman at one of his rallies shortly after the debate and he is a really cool down-to-earth guy. I’m voting for him. Lyman 2024!
Phil Lyman for governor. Cox is an establishment RINO. Remember he announced his pronouns?
Ughh!! 🤦♀️ That was awful!! Cox is such a turn off!
Cox has stated that Utah will be “the birthplace of the fourth industrial revolution.“ That is not an establishment RINO… That is a Marxist.
Housing reform? All the building going on around here looks like wartime housing. They're all the same piled on top of each other and crammed in small spaces. Looks like preparation for 15 minute cities.
You misspelled "prisons"
Switch to decaf Cox, you are the poster child of an anxiety attack. GO LYMAN!
The Olympics poll mentioned had a sample size of 880 people and the 79% included both strong support and somewhat support. It also looks like the question didn't include a caveat for costs from the state.
Cox's word salad.
I'm glad that Cox was able to introduce himself without giving his pronouns.
😂
Go Lyman!!!!
If any of my fellow Utahns are confused as to whether or not cox is a conservative, let me assure you he is definitely not.
Cox looks puny standing next to Phil Lyman! He/him does have an X-Large ego! Go Lyman!!
Phil Lyman has my vote!!!
Yoo why does Cox look like he’s wearing super white makeup and lipstick 😂
I really appreciate the question about professional sports. I've been so annoyed by this.
How are people not seeing how bad young people, or second chance people, have it in Utah? Rent and housing are absolutely unaffordable! Food costs have skyrocketed. Utah can boast about being the best economy, but in Biden's America, what does that even mean? I dont want to be under the leadership of a man who belittles members of his own party and won't answer good questions, but instead respond with profanity. Cox, even in this debate, seems unstable. Can Utahns please swallow their pride, forget their hate for Trump, and vote for the candidate that is actually a "good man"? That's Phil Lyman! VOTE LYMAN!
It dosen't make any sense that cox won. Mail in voting needs to go
Absolutely.
In person. Same day. Double verified. No exceptions.
These two are out of touch in different ways. Poor Utah. Housing will continue to go up and up. Young people have a hard uphill battle. The lack of leadership on the local and national level is sad.
I work in home building and I can tell you - Cox gets it.
@@leannab902 yeah gets it for 15 min citys. He is a lame
@@leannab902I'm sorry, what exactly does he get?
Bonuses? Under the table deals?
Because he sure doesn't "get" utahns
@@elijahbutterfield4869 I’m talking about housing. He understands what needs to be done to address the affordable housing crisis. Which is the number 1 threat to Utah right now. He has worked alongside experts to take action with bills like HB572 (read up on it) and continues to visit and work with city officials all over the state to encourage them to remove red tape and the poisonous NIMBY mindset that is preventing the building of smaller starter homes. If we want our children and grandchildren to ever achieve homeownership and even STAY in our state, we need a leader like Cox who, yes, understands the complexities behind the issue. Lyman’s hands-off approach would have gotten us no where and into further turmoil.
Great debate.
Just voted for Lyman!
Earthship is the way to go stop draining lakes and save the water that falls each year where you're at.
If we did what Arizona does, and just have rock garden front yards, we wouldn't have to use so much water.
If we're dead set, planning on using that amount of water, why couldn't everyone be encouraged to grow gardens in their yards?
But. No. It has to be grass. It has to be three inches tall. Yadda yadda
So many ruled and regulations propped up solely on the principle of collecting more money through fines
Cox betrayed what he ran on. Voting Lyman!!!!
Wow! Cox looks like Biden during his State of the Union address. Is he highly caffeinated ? ... or ???
I really appreciated the question posed by the young man, Bruce, who is a political science major. His question had to do with mandating the study of government. Mr. Lyman seemed to be answering that because students enjoy freedoms in this country they will eventually get around to studying the history of our country and how those freedoms came into being. I think that is wishful thinking. I really liked the answer Governor Cox gave on this one. I think too many young people are clueless about the history of our country, including The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, etc, because it is not always taught in schools. Yes, mandates can get in the way of learning, but I'm all for required courses in American history and government.
Thank you for this very well moderated and respectful debate. They both seem like qualified, reasonable candidates, and that is high praise considering the corrupt politicians we have in so many other offices and legislative bodies around the country.
Cox IS one of those “corrupt politicians.” Start with the amount of money his family made off of Covid. How about selling Utah out to China. The list is long…
Yes. Agreed. Corrupt like Crooked Cox.
:/
Growth, Growth, Growth is what I see Cox wants
Utah is full
Cox needs to go to bad he won.
We don't need growth, we don't need a bigger government. But that's all Cox seems to want
What's up with the ASL signer? Is the Utah Debate Commission assuming deaf people can't read captions?
1. Auto generated captions aren't always accurate and are often misleading.
2. Yes, there are plenty of deaf people that can't read.
3. It's required by Utah law.
4. English speech often uses idioms and isn't always literal. Interpreters will translate to ASL in a way that's easier to understand.
Where was this poll nobody wants the Olympics 🙄
It was a poll of 800 people and 49% actually only wanted it.

Using tax payer dollars to pay for his campaign instead of donors,
Cutting deals with elites to force Utah to be the Spearhead of the "fourth industrial revolution", cutting corrupt deals to build two (so far) open air prisons known as "15 minute smart cities" which are based on the CCP government model of social credit scores.
Encouraging the woke mind virus among children, and implementing D.E.I in social settings, institutions, and schools, leading to kids being groomed and wearing fetish and kink content in schools,
Not taking care of the roads, not taking care of the people, not listening to the people, expanding government to the extreme.
Censoring and shutting people down on social media and public settings, after telling them to "disagree better".
Implementing and pressuring mask vaccine mandates on companies corporations and the free people of this state.
Bussing in thousands and thousands of criminal aliens under his watch, to give pay outs and hand outs to them, instead of struggling young people.
And that's just a short list off the top of my head from a very long list of offenses he has committed.
He's crooked and corrupt, he is the blue-est red state governor in the union, and he is a crybully who borderlines on state dictator. Basically he's a utah Gavin Newsom, that wants to turn SLC into NYC.
Take your pick.
But if you think at all that it hasn't been too good in some places, it's going to get a whole lot worse.
I’m not at all surprised at the negative comments here. Yes, it can be frustrating to read. But that was my observation even in my years as a state delegate. The folks who are harder “party liners”, just for the sake of being such, tend to be the loudest…and the most negative.
I think we have a great governor who represents the people of Utah very well. I love his initiative to “disagree better.” Again, it represents us well as a population. It certainly seems to follow my Savior’s example of how to treat others.
I don’t know Phil Lyman, and I would not disparage him. I know what Governor and First Lady Cox have done and continue to do. They are great people. Perfect? Absolutely not. But then, neither am I.
You must be a good friend to the Cox’s.
Cox has made Utah a joke!!
Do you support cox taking food benefits from tax paying families and giving them to illegals???
Great outlook. The loudest are luckily not typically the majority.
Cox is a rino and not and its sad he won. Mail in voting needs to go.
Lyman isn't even listening to the questions. What is going on? Just from listening to this, I'm leaning towards Cox. Should I know more? He seems more experienced in office.
Lyman is listening. He’s just asking for clarification, as anyone would do after listening to Cox ramble on and on and on.
Cox kinda actually seemed to dance around the actual matter and subject of the question
Cox is 100% correct that housing affordability is the single most important issue. His ideas are far superior than Lyman's, thought he too seems to fetishize the single family home instead of townhouses, rowhouses, condos, twinhomes, 4-plex, cottage homes (e.g. missing middle). Lyman's position is essentially the HOUSES act by Mike Lee. That won't work. The answer is to unlock affordability is state pre-emption to cut down on NIMBY local regulation that prohibits/restricts affordable. Lyman talks a big game about "free market principles" but when you have local cities that vote down affordable light density (which Lyman denigrates and attacks) he gives away the game; he simply doesn't get it. To put it another way, it's a lot more important to legalize the construction of all types of housing everywhere in Utah than it is to fight about how much light a Temple Heber valley will give off.
Absolutely
Absolutely not
To bad he won. He is a real cox sucker

Cox 🎉
Happy to comment Cox brought home the W 🎉🎉
Housing costs are truly out of control, freeways are full of litter and I don't get why Cox is not advertising with red for Republican, his signs are green and yellow!!! That is so telling. The farm land is being swallowed up by cheap apartment buildings. Where is the water for those buildings coming from?? Cox has got to go.
Most residential water usage is used for watering landscaping, indoor water usage is a small fraction of residential water usage. So When you developed farm land into housing, wither they are single family homes or apartment, the water usage actually goes down on that land.
The only way to fix housing costs is to build more to meet demand, so you’re comment is slightly contradictory
They dont want people to own land or homes. Cox is a 15min city piece of cox
I feel like Governor Cox better represents me. He has my vote!
I’m voting for Cox and this is why:
1. Cox comes across as more diplomatic than Lyman, i.e. he would be able to work with opposing views and find amicable solutions.
2. Cox is more knowledgeable than Lyman about the issues. For example, Olympics. I think Olympics would be great for Utah. According to polling, 79% of Utah agrees, but Lyman is out of touch. (This is just an example that comes to mind rn, not my main issue) Govt Ed in school-i agree with Cox, that it needs to be taught in school. Lyman’s hands-off approach to civics ed is one of the reasons we’re in a mess. There were a couple other questions that Lyman didn’t know about (can’t recall rn, i wish they had chapters or time stamps on this vid)
3. He would love to get rid of the state income tax. Lyman gave some incoherent response.
4. They both agree on a lot of issues, like illegal immigration, but again, Cox comes across as more professional and someone who would be able to persuade the opposition instead of “aggressive rhetoric”. Some might say “that’s weak”, but people like to do things they agree to do, not when they are bullied to do it. (One can attract more bees with honey than vinegar, or however that saying goes.
5. Finally, my impression of Lyman is that his people skills are not as good as Cox’. Lyman strikes me as he would be confrontational and would push opposition away, instead of persuading them. And Lyman is a maga extremist kook. Maga hijacked the GOP and we need to get it back.
Thank you

What are all of you talking about? Spencer Cox honestly is a good governor who learns from things like the failure of Gavin Newsom in California and learns from cities like Las Vegas with how they conserve water so the salt lake doesn't dry up, which would kill your state, he has created affordable housing and helped reduce homelessness here in Utah, I think Phil just wants the power but spencer is passionate about this state which is what you people need, stronger communities! look I'm good at reading people and if you want a horrible governor elect this Lyman guy but he's not honest and he seems like an idiot and a generic politician, get out of your echo chambers and listen to what these men are saying and the vibe.
