The fact that Mehdi Hasan can sit in the studio and speak his mind IS NOT because of the multiculturalism. It was possible because of BRITISH values, i.e. freedom of speech, equality and abiding to the law.

Albert Abuzarov these British values don't exist anywhere else in the world? And for such integral values, how long have they been around? Women have only had the vote for 100 years, we only began to enact decent race equality legislation in the 1960s. It seems that 'British values' aren't concrete and absolute ideals but rather ever-changing and adapting (through multi-culturalism and our constantly changing social landscape) to fit how our society wants to live and conduct itself

I think all the comments above are valid to some extent.
Britain and america, contrary to what the bleeding hearts of the left want to think; have always been at the forefront of human rights. America didn't start slavery - it ended it - yet look how its synonymous with Racism and Slavery. Its incredibly annoying to hear people paint one of the most liberal and accepting countries as a intolerable white supremacist hell hole - without ever truly defending it for what it is - what Zulkefli Johan says lol

I love it when Mehdi and the like bring up Indonesia as an example of Muslim tolerance and affinity for democracy. It is in so far that these countries ( including Turkey and Bosnia) adopt secular liberal values that they become tolerant. The greater the religiosity in a country towards "Islamic doctrine" that the country become less and less democratic.

Casa in Spanish means 'house' and Pepe is a lonely loser who invites everybody to his house with the hope that they won't vandalize his property but have fun with him but instead of that everybody comes in and does whatever the *** they want. My point is this, name me a single democratic country that has more stability than Qatar, UAE, Saudi? Free speech is THE most important right on earth. *_ALL_* ideas should be critiqued and ridiculed and satirized. Religion _offends me_ all the time. I find religion to be evil and immoral and untrue...yet I support their right to say ANYTHING they wish. Unlike religious people, I'd never be ridiculous enough to demand their right to free speech be limited in any way whatsoever. Free speech should be total and open and free to all. ANY idea can be talked about in ANY way ANYONE wants. Period. If it offends you, deal with it. Religion offends me...so should I be able to ban religion because it's offensive to me and many others?? You can't mention terrorism without them going; 'But that's not solely a muslim thing!' You can't mention gay intolerance in islam without a 'The Christians do that too' .
And I am *so* tired of it. This Mehdi is always such a prime example of this weaseling, too. How about you ever come up with an argument, than slithering your way through a debate, averting attention, hoping time passes by discussing something else? - It's such an apparent stratagem that happens all the bloody time.
When people shout Allahu Akbar when blowing people up - denying that this has anything to do with religion immediately renders his argument, and his credibility to the point of zero. Yet, this shit always gets applause. How on earth is this possible? Why do people come to these debates, if they're not willing to listen to things that are being said?

A common punishment for these offenses is public flogging, which involves beating someone with a whip or a stick. Indonesia's President Joko Widodo, along with human rights activists, have called for the public floggings in Aceh to stop. But authorities in the province insist the practice deters crime. Shariah police in Banda Aceh, the province's largest city, patrol the streets to monitor offenses. Aech follows Shariah under a 2005 autonomy deal with the central government.

Although not specifically classified as Sharia, many local governments attempt to implement Sharia-inspired regulations. A 2011 media report indicated that there are more than 150 Sharia-inspired laws in the country. Although these regulations are unevenly enforced and apply only to Muslims, many Muslim scholars and human rights activists claim that these regulations create or increase discrimination against women. In some cases these laws require Muslim women to wear headscarves in public and prevent Muslim women from receiving government services if they are not wearing headscarves. Some local regulations also mandate that elected Muslim officials, students, civil servants, and individuals seeking marriage licenses be able to read the Quran in Arabic and prohibit Muslims from consuming alcohol and gambling. Other regulations prohibit the sale of food and beverages during the day throughout the month of Ramadan and make mandatory the payment of zakat, or alms, for Muslims. Yes...with different people asserting that *their* interpretation of Islam is the right one, and several extremist muslim groups gaining followers. It's going to collapse and fall apart, and Mehdi is completely blind to it like he always has been.

Murray at his divisive best - packaging care, concern and a call for fairness and justifying it by alienating and insulting his usual religious scapegoat....his capacity for to polarise complex points, inject sinister tones to all communication whilst spouting the exact same dogma as those he opposes is astounding..my favourite term used there was 'soft power' the subtext being to undermine and pressure behind the scenes....not exactly in the spirit of 'frank and open discussion eh Douglas?....

Hasan_is WRONG re Indonesia_ Indonesia is an (Islamic) Democratic Republic; quote: Malaysia and Brunei's governments are Islamic theocracies, and they are more stable than the "democracy" we got running in Indonesia. You see, Indonesians claim they have an "Islamic democracy", and just to admit what kind of "democracy" is "Islamic"? Indonesia's governing style, is all of Islamic law aka "Shariah Law". This goes against all the ethics of a democracy. A democracy means "power to the people", ALL PEOPLE. In Indonesia, Christians aren't even allowed to hold oath in high office positions. In a democratic nation, you can be president and worship Darth Vader for anyone cares as long as you can keep the rights of the nations and the people's voice at hand. If Indonesia was a democratic nation, the army would be helping those getting persecuted and having their democratic rights oppressed. Christians who preach in Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Indonesia get ARRESTED and IMPRISONED. No democratic nation would arrest its people just because they are preaching their religious beliefs to THEIR OWN followers_unquote

This is simple school yard psychology... when you're in an argument you start telling all the kids that the coolest kid in school loved what you did but all he pimple faced outcasts backed your opponent.. and the kids support you more so as to not look like they associate themselves with the outcast loner group. That is the very definition of self segregation and is the absolute failure of that culture to integrate! It's disgusting. If you cannot integrate into the basic LAW framework of the host country, and push to change them, you aren't helping your host country.
