Hey Kevin, awesome video and setup. The reason your cold even in that -15 sleeping bag is the same issue that hammock campers have in the winter, its the reason they use underquilts, your body is squishing the thermal layer in the sleeping bag taking away the thermal properties and drawing your body heat downward while the cold air underneath the cot is pulling your heat away and cooling you, look into putting a another layer under you or under the cot like a a underquilt.
I came across this video because I'm looking to do some serious pontoon boat camping myself. First of all, I really enjoyed this video. I like your friendly, easy-going style a lot. I also applaud you for getting out there and expanding your horizons. A couple of pro tips: Your Mr. Heater can be adapted to a an LP tank, which will not so easily run out as the 1lbs tanks do. Also, much cheaper. You also don't have to rely on expensive, pre-packaged hiker meals with your setup. Think easy carbs like ramen, instant rice, and even Knorr rice and pasta packets (and the like), easy, no refrigerate proteins like summer sausage, country ham, pepperoni, salami, et cetera. And then canned vegetables/beans. Your horizons there are limitless with easy storage, cooking, and cleanup.
I meant to add: why buy an expensive pre-packaged granola breakfast (unless you want that)? You can buy a package of granola cereal, dehydrated strawberries (and all sorts of other fruits), ultra-pasteurized milk (or soy milk) which require no refrigeration, or yogurt (does require refrigeration, unless it's cold outside) all at Walmart.
This is something I was literally just thinking about trying ( renting a pontoon and camp out on it with my son) so I punch it in on the tubes and this popped up first!! Love your boat brother!
Jim here from Chilo, OH, I live on the Ohio river, one of the best add on to my pontoon is to the side doors, you know those door stops you put at the bottom of your doors in your house with the little rubber feet? you take your foot and pop it down, perfect to keep the doors open. Great vid"s man!
Thanks Kevin, I really enjoyed this video. I too pull all nighters on my pontoon but without the enclosure, the main reason my wife won't go back. And I bet that alfredo probably wouldn't be that good at home, weird how everything tastes better when your out like that. Great video pal and good luck in the future.
Watched your video as I have just purchased a pontoon and was wondering about the camping on it. You mentioned the bag not keeping you all that warm when the temp dropped down and what you were wearing to sleep in. From an old man who has spent many sub zero nights in a sleeping bag in Elk camp, here is a tip that so many will say baloney to, my Brother-in-law did, do not wear clothing to sleep in, you will sleep warmer. The reason is your body heat will get trapped by your clothing instead of warming the inside of the bag. B-I-L, from California, didn't believe me when we went to bed in camp, the first night, the beer was frozen and the whiskey was sluggish. The next night he tried it my way and was a convert. If you feel the need to wear some clothing when using a sleeping bag, wear it on top of the sleeping bag, not on you inside the bag, especially a jacket. Gives just a little extra layer but surprising how effective it is.
just as an fyi, on the sleeping bag thing. When you sleep in them fully clothed they don't seem to work all that well. I have a 3 bag sleep system, army from my time in the service. Unless it's winter winter I need only my lightweight green bag and bivy cover. when it's going to get pretty cold need to add the black bag in. Also cot and or hammock you need a pad underneath to stay warm as the air is under the cot/hammock. Cool video. We don't camp on the boat much we do try to get some ZZZs in the over night tournaments though.
Hello Kind Sir, As Chesapeake Bay was saying you need to pick up a self inflating PAD to put on top of your cot. I usually use an 1.5 inch pad but I do have them up to 3 inches for snow camping, I just open the valve and mine self inflate and when they are done I usually give them a couple of puffs to add a little bit extra, it really helps. I weigh in @ 298 and I really squish the sleeping bag flat and the pad will help by adding some insulation under you. And I also use one of these ( Coleman Sleeping Bag | 50°F Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner ) that my wife picked up for us to use. I teased her bad about it, but boy was I wrong they work super great, it's like fleece sheets on your bed easily add 15 degrees more to your sleeping bag, and after camping a few times you can wash them at home and keep your sleeping bag clean, and during the summer I use it as my only sleeping bag it works well. I have seen some that are silky but I don't know I would probably build up so much static energy I would shoot sparks 6 inches from my fingers
Thanks for your content. Gotta say, for the first video of yours that I have come across I am impressed with your attitude at life, you seem like one of them kind hearted souls that are becoming increasingly rare these days. A little bit of advice on camping in the winter time that I picked up in the Army, camping on a Cot in the cold prevents you from making the most of your insulation. You simply have too much cold air underneath you as well as around you that robs your body of heat. We had outstanding sleeping bags in the Army and even they felt worthless on a cot in the winter if you had no insulation layer underneath your body to absorb the heat.
Well thank you Charlie K. Yes, I've received much advice since this video came out. I've invested in a sleeping bag liner and a sleeping pad to go between me and the cot. Thanks again for watching and for the tip. Thank you also for your service.
Kevin awesome job guy. Always found that nomatter how you camp the food taste way better Being outside. Loved the video hope you continue doing what your doing and enjoy your adventures. Life is way to short not to. Tight lines as always...
The mountain house chicken teriyaki with rice cold soaked, then add some hot Cheetos when you’re ready to eat….. best meal ever when you’re hiking 6 miles into the woods with a bow to kill a big black bear that you have patterned….. I will stand by that meal all day long
Nice camping. Those Muddy River rods look reeeeal purty at night. When I went hunting I had the blue camping coffee pot with the white dots, and I'd take noodle bowls and hot dogs. Boil the hot dogs in the water and pour that water into the noodle bowl.

WTG Kevin! That was awesome and very informative. I’m been wanting to camp the Mississippi River on my pontoon. I need just about everything you used. Except I need a 2 burner I think? Gotta have my coffee with the bacon! I could literally smell that bacon inside the now seasoned enclosure!
@@PalmettoCats That it is, I miss it. Moved up near Atlanta GA, and miss that salty life big time. Its nice seeing another bigger dude doing this stuff. I have been really wanting to do some kind of boat camping, been all kinds of looking never even thought about a pontoon style boat. Have you seen anyone lower part of a pontoon deck in the middle before? Was looking at some pontoon online and was thinking how much better it would be in the wind if you could lower the roof down some but be able to keep the head room (6-3 here) by lowering part of the deck down into the space between the pontoons.
