Like a set from the 50's. A quintet together for a few nights. Playing spot on. First you master your instrument, then master the music, then you get in the groove. They all have it.
@@buthan494 While I hear melodic patterns in her playing, I hear a more Coltrane-ish feel thing here, a Coltrane overall 'vibe' in the overall effect to my ears closer to Trane than a Brecker. especially in her 'looser' , somewhat asymmetrical phrasing, classic Brecker is much more urbane and manicured, much more 'evenly constructed', plus a lot of what we consider 'Brecker' comes in large parts from guys like Joe Henderson, Rollins and Coltrane, like those longer notes she ends some phrases on an which Brecker became famous for. Trane was doing that back in 1958 Miles Davis group. I hear a Brecker in the tune's overall chord progression, tempo and mood. But as far as her playing, not so much. And for what is worth. What Morden saxophonist is not influenced by MB? But I often hear Melissa Aldana trying to go back to the guys who influenced guys like MB, back to the 'roots' of Post Bop playing.
On a modal tune Impressions style tune like this, it’s hard to escape the Coltrane influence. But overall, her originality is what makes her so interesting. So she sounds almost nothing like Coltrane or Brecker. Not at all. Her influences are Rollins, Don Byas, Mark Turner (heavily) and Joe Lovano.
@@marike1100 My comment is referring to.....(drum roll).... this tune, but Hard to escape doest mean 'impossible'. PS: I never wrote she 'sounds like Coltrane'. I wrote 'MA displaying a strong Coltrane influence'. Meaning here. On this tune. But if you feel she sounds 'nothing like Coltrane' here, I respect your assessment. PS2: I might be wrong but Lovano was influenced by Trane. So even if it might not be a direct and main influence, the fact that you claim Aldana was influenced by Lovano, gives her an indirect Trae. influence.
Somehow I have listened to this on youtube about 18 times and transcribed Melissa's solo, and only now I realized that the song title isn't Balkan Food....
I thought I was the only one. Must have listened at least 18 times, too. So much to see. One of many highlights is when Melissa plays a paraphrase of one of Vlad's breaks near the end. Think you could share the Melissa transcription?
so good, all the band, but I just could not get my eyes off of Linda being so intensively in the groove, and the short mutual glances of joy with the guitarist, when one has been through those, it brings a rememberance of worth
Luhvissimo!
No!! Just good musicians that are just carrying on the tradition which pioneer players have already established!! This has been done through out the past!!!

If you had some sort of canvas to throw over the wires on the stage, it would be easier to get a good picture over on the pianist's side of the stage. I just watched TH-cam by a photographer and spent a lot of time erasing wires and unused mic stands.
T This is about the best I've heard Melissa play rather than put me to sleep standards. But she sounds like a Coltrane clone on this. The guitar player and piano player sound more original. Nice bass work.
Respectfully I couldn't disagree more. Honestly I couldn't see what the fuss over Melissa was after seeing shorts of hers supposedly 8 & 9 months ago. But after this I am intrigued. If that's what a Coltrane clone sounds like, sign me up!
Virtually impossible to be a modern Jazz guitar today and not be influenced by Kurt in some way or another and even if there's an overall influence in tone an timbre, the reverb/delay, if you really pay attention, Mike's actual lines and linear harmony contour/constructs are quite distinct.
Svi su izvanreni muzičari, saksofonistkinja takođe, ali ne volim taj mrtvački ton tipa Coltrane, Shorter i epigoni ! Ne znam samo kakvu poruku takvim usranim tonom žele da pošalju ?!?!?
Fantastic! We are truly blessed with these recordings. What a delight to listen to you guys. 🙌
With my 77 year-old ears, I am throughly enjoying this session!! I appreciate your posting this music! Thank you very much!
Yes .. I am 83 and aj (swede) agree !! (aj is I ) you see ..

Yes, real Jazz here....
I saw Linda Oh playing with Pat Metheny, awesome bassist!
OUTSTANDING! All suberb musicians of the highest caliber! 👍
Beautiful solo fm Aldana!
Melisa Aldana displaying a strong Coltrane influence. A great quintet, you guys sound tight, swinging.
Yeah, while she is mostly been admired as influenced by Rollins..
Breker influence. Only.

very very well...........................................................................
Very nice theme, keeping the spirit of Modal Jazz alive.

What is the actual song title?
Edit: I misread ur comment saying it wasn’t Balkan “flood” instead of “food”😂😂

She has Coltrane inside
isn't this the same changes as "So What"?
You have to be the constant professional to not take a peek at both of those fine women in this group from time to time. Can play their asses off !!!!
Who says girls can't play jazz?
Nobody said that😃
Guitarist wants to be Kurt so bad 😂😂🙈
He is definitely his own man. Great guitar player . DOn't demean anyone's playing.
@Paul Miller what the heck are you talking about?
Virtually impossible to be a modern Jazz guitar today and not be influenced by Kurt in some way or another and even if there's an overall influence in tone an timbre, the reverb/delay, if you really pay attention, Mike's actual lines and linear harmony contour/constructs are quite distinct.
tiluriso well said
Mike Moreno is an incredible individual player! He said in an interview that he took a couple lessons from Kurt and they are friends
