Well, We check the current ,wind & waves the day before trip, we make sure we start swimming against the current at the beginning where we are still fresh, and when current start to pick up we go with it toward the boat/land
if its high tide, too windy or wavy we cancel the trip
soon ill post on mobile apps to navigate the sea and it is so useful and safe to check

In other comment you mentioned that you are 1.5 mile aways from the shore. Is that the rules in order to be allowed doing spear fiahing here in Abu dhabi?
