I got a friend (carpenter) one of these kreg tools for her birthday, she says it's a stable in her toolbox now. Even though she's got lots of more expensive measuring tools at her workshop, she likes its compact size and multifunctionality, she says it's usually accurate enough so she doesn't have to go get something else
I keep my table saw at my dad's shop because I don't have room for it at my house. Yesterday, he told me he had sold it. My plan: Buy another one and put it in the exact same spot in his shop because I still don't have room for one at my house.
Quick tip for dovetailing with chisels, if you buy a cheap vintage chisel, i use a stanley 5005, and take the handle of then you can use a hammer with the accuracy of short wood handle.
of all the gifts that honing guide and the heavy duty table saw that come with it would be the perfect touch for my birthday. For the unstable chisel holding there's a trick I learned from Chinese woodworkers: hold the chisel by the handle as usual, to fine adjust it's cutting position you just wiggle the chisel left to right, back and forth, basically you're making the chisel walk on the workpiece and the two corners of the cutting edge would be its feet. also Rex, since when you adopt that Chinese frame saw? how did you like it?
Had a rather stressfull day yesterday and just went to bed. Got up this morning and saw this offering from Rex and thought I'd watch it with the first coffee of the day. Bad idea and I should have known better. Almost straight away he had me chuckling and then he leapt to the table saw and I spat coffee everywhere 🤣 Thank you Rex for helping shrug off the remnants of a bad day. Hope you, yours and all your followers have a great time over the coming month from Scotland.
Bought a ziptop of door hinge pins for cheap. Opened it and nestled in between found the most beautiful engraved dual bevel, all steel marking knife, no rust, no dings and still sharp.
Loved seeing you break it down for our significant others to understand. Also shout out to you and that cheap Japanese plane you made a video for a while back, I was just using mine yesterday and it rocks.
highly recommend getting a honing guide I have gotten a lot of planes off estate sales, and even had someone hand me a plane with a hand sharpened iron. all were horrible. glass, sandpaper, and a honing guide and you'll think it was sharpened on a CNC
I re-handled a bunch of regular carpenter chisels. The old stanleys are really good quality. The blade is shorter and with a 4" handle it ends up being perfect for a regular sized hand to hold on the handle, kick the pinky out to brace the tip, and hit on the butt right above where your hand is grabbing.
I got an Irwin 6" combo square when i first started along with a 12" combo and a trisquare. The 6" is the first one i go-to 98% of the time. Super handy.
For the chisel work I usually hold mine near the socket. Kind of a half way between the two methods you showed here. Usually close enough to both control methods for my work at least.
Rex! Yours recommendations are awesome! Now You have triggered yet another supply chain crisis in tools departments. Cheers! All the best for the Christmas!
Honestly, I'm never even sure whether I need to freshen up my honing compound. Every so often I'll think "hmm, it's completely black now (from metal) and I put another layer on. But honestly I don't know for sure if it even makes a difference, it's more an emotional validation that I'm for sure going to be honing well.
Hi Rex video suggestion if you haven’t already “sharpening and review on 140$ Wen bench grinder” because my uncle just got me one for Christmas so I can sharpen my turning tools 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Rex, How would You cut big holes in wooden board with handtools? I am thinking about small project, elevated dog bowl stand made with three boards, like a simple stool, maybe even with simplest nailed jonery. But how to attack the 'hole for the bowl' problem?
Finally gave in Rex, ordered them diamond stones. I'll be a little sad. If these hold up remotely close to the $500, I've already invested into stones. Too bad these weren't around when I was getting started. Seems to good to be true.
@jakobvanklinken I have both types of stones, but I never invested into lower grits stones so now I'll have some plus with how cheap they are I'll hook a buddy up with one and keep one in a tool bag for on jobs. At the end of the day for $20 I'll still have 3 left in the shop that I can beat on for a bit and if they do the same or close enough then I'll be save money as my older stones fail. That's at least my thought process
I have been considering the Schaaf as a less expensive alternative to the basic narex chisels. $30 vs $80 here in the US. Reviews seem to be okay, and I’m pretty sure anything that’s been flattened and sharpened properly will work for someone starting out.
If you use a cheap-ass square, make sure it's square. I had trouble for ages and couldn't figure out why my joints weren't accurate. Then I finally discovered my square was way too far off of square. OMG. Hours of troubles could have been avoided if I'd just checked it initially. Also, sawing out dovetail waste is so much quicker than chiseling it out. Coping saws are cheap. Love your channel.
For other people finding this comment, easy way to test is to find a known flat edge to rest your square against. Put a piece of paper underneath the ruler, draw a line, flip the square over so the ruler is on the other side of the line. If the edge of your ruler is now able to perfectly follow that line your square is actually square. Also, make sure your paper doesn't move haha
"Why not buy this sharpening guide for only fifteen bucks?" Why do that when I can spend ten times as much for the Veritas deluxe honing guide set and barely use it because I don't sharpen my tools anywhere near as often as I should?
I was commissioned to make a guitar for my cousin, and recommended wenge as a possible choice. He wanted to see what the wood looked like, so he typed in when-gay amd clicked on images. Lets just say we didn't end up using wenge for the guitar.
What is it with woodworking youtubers and their seemingly unrestricted access to old sofas? Not once in my life have I encountered an old leather sofa that was more accessible than a leather strop you'd find online or in a Woodcraft. (Thanks for the video though!)

Welp.......there goes all the money I was saving for presents for everybody else!!!!! Thanks Rex! Now I'm broke!!!!!
Get a table saw and get with the program!!
Fantastic! I needed a good laugh today, thanks Rex, it felt really good!

I have both the Kreg measuring tool and the Irwin square. Just get them. You'll use them constantly.
Constantly.
So love your no nonsense channel … keep up the good work

Merry Xmas Rex hope you and your family have a great one.
I've used the scribe. I like scribes, picks, and marking knives though.

I bought that sharpening guide a few years ago on a recommendation and it’s worth every penny.

I cant wait until Rex finds out about 3M lapping sheets and throws that nasty leather away

You can totally sharpen or freshen the hardened Japanese saw teeth with a diamond impregnated "diamond" shaped file by hand.
This reminds me of a video you did years ago where you mildly mocked James Wright for doing the same grinding on sandpaper. Very amusing I think.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Rex.
Spray tack is better for attaching the sand paper it's easier to remove for the next one :D
Rex! Yours recommendations are awesome! Now You have triggered yet another supply chain crisis in tools departments. Cheers! All the best for the Christmas!
Fantastic tips, Rex! Thanks a bunch! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And happy holidays!
Nice choices Rex. Hope you have a great holiday too.
Thanks Rex. Merry Christmas. Take care & stay safe.
Nice video Rex, but what about ideas of gifts for the people we love?
Always learn something watching your videos.
That’s for another one Rex.
thank you

Almost exactly how I do it. The projection guide is two lines is two lines on an oak cut off, and I often start with even coarser paper like 80 grit.
Thanks again Rex. Perfect!
Oh, BTW, I want one of your screw thingy to put on my key ring. ❤😂
Merry Christmas Rex

I have a sears 6 inch square I bought 20 years ago that I still use
I use an empire engineer square from Home Depot I don’t know how much they are I like mine
No Rex - it has metric on the FRONT!

If you already have whetstones, why invest in these diamond ones? Don't mean to cast any judgement here, if there's a reason I'd love to know about it

After a few days messing with these stones, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're actually a beginner, then sure otherwise they are kinda junk
I did the Wenge - Wengay - Whatevere bit myself in real life the other day!
Interested in the Narex chisels, until I saw the price and it is even more in UK. Grrrr
I have been considering the Schaaf as a less expensive alternative to the basic narex chisels. $30 vs $80 here in the US. Reviews seem to be okay, and I’m pretty sure anything that’s been flattened and sharpened properly will work for someone starting out.
Actually I have just found Faithfull branded set from FFX (a reputable UK company) for £26 inc delivery. Excellent value

@@danielh12345 thanks! great addition
Kreg is good stuff
My guy, feel like I ain't seen ya in a while!
I have the M&T sticker on my bandsaw: "Kill your tablesaw"
I got a pocket jig. Then I learned that they need special screws hahahaha!
Hey Rex-
Can I add a vise to the minimum timber work bench??
You sharpen with sandpaper, diamond stones and then show standard sharpening stones. Which one to use?
Hand Tool Hero? But...but...you told us we were supposed to use our iron cap for that! ;)
Honing guide has been Rex’d. Only available from third parties now. 😭
The sound effects at 3:55... I assume there were some farts stuck in that old couch leather.
My editor is a funny fellow.

No woodworkers in my family

It’s wen-gayyyyyyeeeeeeeee

Thanks rex. Where's the best place to get a rat piss chest?
I hate the feel of the japanese handles very uncomfortable to my hand
get a table saw and get with programing ,.... made me laugh out loud. only a hand tool guy knows what that means.
WRONG! I HAVE USED MY SCRIBE 2TIMES IN 43 YEARS. LOL
Well. I just spent a fortune.
7$ is not worth waiting 3 hours :P.
Sorry, Rex. When I see "Hack" in the title I hit the "don't recommend channel". Goodbye.
