My parent's gave me a Polar Teddy bear when I was born. Ever since Polar Bears have had a very special place in my heart. Seeing them up close is truly a amazing experience.
FUN FACT: There's some villages in polar bear regions where people don't lock their front door in case someone is walking down the road and sees a polar bear they can run into the house before they get attacked. Sounds crazy to 99% of us but most of these small towns everyone knows one another so that helps.
Why do they gotta make an apex predator that could kill me in an instant so adorable? I acknowledge that I would _definitely_ die if I tried, but I just wanna hug them!
@@OMalleyTheMaggot It's is possible but the bears were acquired/trained in questionable circumstances. A couple of places in Russia I've seen have bears trained for the film industry.
I once hugged a polar bear 🐻❄️ you just have to talk to them in a calm, cautious manner so as not to interfere with her cubs. Bears are so misunderstood!
Human: "Seeing an apex predator look at you from just a few centimeters away is magical and life-changing" Polar Bear: "How do I access this dessert bar?"
Out of all the wild predators in the world that deserve respect, polar bears have to be one of the top ones since they do deliberately hunt humans given the opportunity as well.
That's why if you ever plan to visit the Arctic, you should always travel with a friend. That way, if you come across a polar bear, you don't need to try and outrun the bear - you just need to outrun your friend.
Such a beautiful episode. And a positive one too, adapting human settlements to the bear's behavioral change due to climate change. Thank you Danielle and team!
Danielle, you got me crying as well. What a moment! Polar Bears are majestic! This is your best story yet. I'm so envious. ❤ Since you were there, a story on the Arctic Fox would be cool, too. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

CBC has a series called "Artic Vets" which is about the Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Conservancy which works with the Churchill population. They have lots of content on Polar Bear generally as well as conservation of other Arctic animals.
If you ever get a chance to visit Cochrane you can get to see some rehabilitated polar bears with just a pane of glass between you and them. Churchill is probably a better experience because it's their actual environment. But Cochrane is pretty impressive. They've given them land with a stocked Lake so the bears can go hunting.
Danielle, I’d love to see you do a video on your illustrations and sketches, and how it’s informed your understanding of anatomy and nature. I love how much this experience moved you. I think we would all feel the same.
I remember my school talking about a program they run where they take students up there to Churchill to learn about polar bears. This video is really cool :)
This was easily my favorite episode yet (unbiased!), it was incredible seeing how much it meant to you too. I'm so glad you had the good fortune to be able to share this beautiful moment with us!
One of those problem bears was Mercedes who ended up at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. She spent her last years at Highland Wildlife Park testing a new, more natural enclosures with a rather surprising barrier, deer fencing! When Mercedes was given a health check, the old girl still had all of the fur between the pads on her feet, something that is apparently unusual in polar bears housed in an all concrete enclosure.
I imagine once the bears realized you weren't food (or easily accessible food 😂), they were just curious about everyone. That was a really beautiful moment. Also, I don't know why I assumed polar bears lived in Antarctica. It was one of those assumptions I made and never thought through.
The first time I saw a polar bear was in a zoo and that was shortly after my mom passed, polar bears are her favorite animal she's always wanted to see and it made me cry when I got to see them
Ursus maritimus, what a beautiful species, just keep your distance, I saw the video where a polar bear was trying to reach a cameraman and some people thought it was for friendly bear hugs. When you're out on the arctic sea, you'll take what you can get.

Wow! What an episode? About a year ago (before you relocated from Vancouver to Toronto); I suggested that you go up to the Arctic and film episodes because of all of the different animals, plants, and National Parks that are unique to Canada; and can only be found in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. This polar bear episode (filmed in Churchill, Manitoba and close to the Arctic) is why. You will get killer episodes; and I hope that this experience demonstrates that while the occasional episode on, say the Wooodduck, filmed in some reserve on Lake Ontario, is fine --- it is nothing what you can unlock for episodes in the vast wilderness of the Canadian Arctic. About 3 years ago, I renewed my Canadian Passport in Mexico City, and the Canadian Embassy had a picture for each Province & Territory on the side of it's large outside retaining wall. The one for Manitoba was an obviously photoshopped photo of a closeup of two massive heads staring and smiling at each other --- almost touching heads. One was a man wearing a winter tuque and the other was that of a polar bear. If that picture were real; the man would have no head. I hope that you guys will go up to Nunavut and do an episode on Narwhals. That would be also phenomenon. You would have to coordinate their breeding seasons and when it is the best time to catch them in the wild. Canada has some great National Parks; and I feel like you could aloo be exploiting them more for episodes. Even though episodes in BC & Alberta are not as accessible for you as they once were; you have not really exploited the exhaustiveness that is Wood Buffalo for episodes..
