She said her name was Jane and that she'd just come for the day She looked so young and harmless that I couldn't turn away So with my little ukulele in my hand, I took a stroll with Jane along the sand We walked along for miles without a single care or frown But when we reached the sand hills she said "Come on let's sit down" I felt so shy and bashful sitting there, 'cause the things I said she didn't understand She said "Your love just turns me dizzy, come along big boy get busy" But I kept my ukulele in my hand, yes sir, I kept my ukulele in my hand Made up my mind that I'd get wed some eighteen months ago I also bought a book about the things you want to know But just about a week ago I got a awful fright I had to get dressed quickly in the middle of the night And with my little ukulele in my hand, I ran along the road for Dr. Brand It didn't take him long to get his little bag of tools I held his hat and coat and let him have my book of rules Out of the bedroom door he looked and smiled He said, "Come inside and see your wife and child" My heart it jumped with joy, I could see it was a boy For he had a ukulele in his hand, oh baby He had a ukulele in his hand
OK, but not all the same as this recording.. :) These lyrics are from a later recording from the film he did, the record here is the original recording he did 1933 before he even made a movie.. ;)
To be honest I'm not sure, this one was banned by the Decca until he changed the title from 'My little Ukulele In My Hand' To 'My Little Ukulele.. Then the BBC banned it on the radio until some of the lyrics were changed.. But I'm taken to believe that this record was also the first ever record of any artist Banned by the BBC.. I think the amount of records that he had to get re-written was at least 10 maybe more... I don't think Regal Zonophone banned any though... I will upload his banned ones, until re-written, they do include most of his popular ones..
I heard a few of formby's banned songs somewhere awhile ago it was interesting I'd be happy to find a George formby 78 especially a banned recording to drive the extremely sensitive people crazy :)
A cool listen! Interesting it was banned.... although his uke is a playful reference back and forth to his willy. So... too controversial for the times. I also learned that 78's are only one song on each side. I never knew that before! Just like the 45's are. Hmmmm.
You can get 45s with 4 songs two each side called EP's, although some run at 33rpm and some at 45rpm.. You have to remember that 78s have a groove size of 3mm and are running at a much faster speed, they are the first ever records.. In the 40's the first microgroove LP's were sold, but became more popular in the late 50's In the UK.. Yes George was very tongue in cheek and had to have a few of his songs re-written as banned by either the label or the BBC.. I could never get a tune from my ukulele, I kept getting my fingers caught up in the strings.
