    Many thoughts for George Formby, his is my favorite British accent of all time 🇬🇧❤ Also feel sad that he apologizes for not doing well in school, because he had a learning disability so it clearly wasn't his fault. Very cruel of his father to send him away as a child just to make money off him...But karma caught up, and gave little George the break he worked so hard for eventually. I'm an American fan and saw some of his movies as a very small child on TV from a local Chicago station. I feel very lucky to have seen them too. No Limit was my favorite one, with the racing motorcycles! I now own over 30 of his music CDs. God bless George, coughing and out of breath, giving us the best show he could in the last months of his life, always brightly smiling. 💖😂😭🌌👼🕉️

    A proper big star, can you imagine who he could be compared today?, he was incredibly successful. I read years ago that his greatest joy was to sit in the back of his Rolls Royce eating fish and chips from newspaper lol. What a wonderful entertainer in every sense of the word unlike many today

      I think Tom Lehrer, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnies, Eric Idle, and to some extent, Weird Al.

      I totally believe that ….really. The Fish n chips no doubt being what he ate as a child and evoked that era for him.

    As a American I fell neglected that I never heard of George Formby till I was 45 years old. No clue how his movies or songs never played in the United States. Now that I know who he is now I want to buy his movies to watch for the first time. Sad to say none of his movies will work here in the U.S. because of the format. Those are in PAL and ours is Ntsc Argggg. I went ahead and bought a DVD collection anyways. I can't watch it yet but I'm sure there is a way to get it to play. Still awesome to discover a legendary artist like this.

      I don't see much on TH-cam. Turner Classic Movies ran a few of his films a few months ago. I've gladly bought a region free DVD player for around $50 years ago, and that was 15 years ago, so they're likely cheaper now.

    I understand this is his last filmed performance - charming man - I believe he loved his wife Beryl and she loved him - she has received something of a bad press - but without her, we may never have heard of George and she did look out for him and they appeared to be happy;
    What more can you ask?

    It's great watching George's live performances. In the movies, if he messed up a part of it, they could potentially start again. Whereas, on the stage, what happens happens.

    This is definitely from the "Formby's Farewell" edition. That's the only one with this new captioning and the start and end credits were faded in and out on Alan's "Remembering" video.
    Actually, the original VHS of "Fornby's Farewell" was a full unedited copy which was taken from the Formby Society's own print but when they reissued it on DVD they 'borrowed' the better version from Alan's video. That explains the 'video line' at the bottom in the upload and why the credits are missing.

    I need to look for the DVD version of 'Remembering' then as I was not aware that it was available as DVD (legally).

    Engineers with the technical knowledge can do wonders with old 16mm telerecordings like this. There's a process called vidfire that can restore the original video look of original transmission.

  • @formby2
    @formby2 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was recorded on video but only preserved by the BBC on film so that the tape could be reused. This was normal practice then and we're lucky that it was transferred to film at all as many shows were just wiped without a film copy being made.
    This upload is from an issue (possibly not legal) called "Formby's Farewell" - the new captioning at the start and the end is unique to that issue, It was released on VHS first and then DVD but from the band at the bottom I'd say this is from the VHS.

      This is from a telerecording, made on film using the Kinescope system.

    I do have the DVD 'Formby's Farewell' but cannot state whether the opening is exactly the same without checking. I do also have the show on VHS as introduced by Alan Randall and again cannot state whether that is the same opening or not. I do have another copy of the programme too on DVD but not sure of the origin of that one and again the opening credits may or may not be the same. I am going to have to dig them out now and see just to satisfy my mind :-)

  • @davegb99
    @davegb99 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It must have been as the show on here was taken from either VHS or DVD and is available on PAL DVD - but not in the quality you would expect today.

  • @formby2
    @formby2 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I suspect the third issue you're talking about is the DVD with the pretty poor brownish artwork which Alan produced in conjunction with his early 2000s GF exhibition on the North Pier at Blackpool. Considering it was from the same print as the "Remembering GF" video it's a pretty shocking transfer but it does at least have the full original opening and closing credits. My copy of this came to me from Alan as a gift. He signed the plastic on the inside of the box using a 'gold' ink marker pen.

    Why wasn't the video tape preserved? How stupid of me. Cause Video tape was very expensive back in 1960.R.ca united states could afford the preserve more

  • @formby2
    @formby2 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    There wasn't an official DVD of "Remembering". There was "Remembering" issued on VHS only, "Farewell" issued on both VHS and DVD (both different) and the 'brown' DVD I mentioned that Alan was involved with but which wasn't connected to his "Remembering" video other than also using Alan's print but in a terrible transfer (which wasn't Alan's fault).
