    The bad part is that since these grants have been given out the manufacturers have increased the prices of rigs so high it is generally a wash.

    $15,000 a year is all they typically have to work with?! Wow, that wouldn't even cover fuel & insurance for a year. These folks deserve so much more help than they are getting.

      Brooks Fire Service Consulting worked with a Fire District that gets $900.00 annually! Totally reorganized them and a neighboring District! If your FD sounds like these, contact Brooks Fire Service Consulting on fb!

      15,000 is the same for our department. 5 trucks, 16 guys. We make do with pancake feeds and renting grills out to people.

    That E-One engine looks pretty nice. It's not from the 1980s. Judging by the trucks to that I saw in this video they look like they're better off than a lot of other volunteer departments.

    These trucks may seem old but I know a department that has trucks that are from the 1980s and 1990s and so far only two of their trucks that they just got are from the early 2000s and fairly recently maybe a year or two ago they just got rid of a couple trucks from the 1960s and 70s.

    The Gear and Equipment should be state of the Art. But old Trucks are normal! They don't run so much Miles, so you can use them for a Lot of Years. In my Department we used our 2 old Engines for 31 an 33 Years.

    The way states spend money is an embarrassment. Most fire departments can't even afford an extractor or a cascade system. My department can't clean it's gear properly or refill our air bottles, but another rover on Mars is cool isn't it.

    As long as they've been well maintained, is it really a problem to have fire engines from the '90s? This isn't a loaded question. I'm genuinely curious.

      30 year old equipment fails like a lightning strike...Especially deep seated rust...The Eng and other mechanics are good but suspension, steering and the like cause deep safety issues no matter how good the mechanic....Liability insurance rates rise according to age of equipment...Its like fixing an old TV over and over....

      NFPA aka National Fire Protection Association doesn’t allow a piece of apparatus to be more than 20 or 25 years old. i can’t remember which. after that time period they no longer are compliant to NFPA modern specifications. Legal in most cases but not replacing equipment regularly does make the job more difficult as it’s an ever changing field. a truck from the 90s in perfect condition even won’t always be adequate for the simple reason requiring different equipment, possibly more equipment and now it doesn’t all fit appropriately. lot of different reasons but nowadays fire apparatus is very expensive

    • @mugwump242
      @mugwump242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@znovosad555 Thanks. Yeah, it's gotta be expensive. Does the NFPA certify local fire departments? Is it a certification issue?

    • @aydenburris8631
      @aydenburris8631 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mugwump242 the NFPA just sets guidelines that are usually adopted and enforced by the states. Enforcement typically follows an issue with some form of resource, (gear, apparatus, station, even training grounds.) A department can use an old truck all they want, but if it breaks down and doesn't make it to a call, a court can use NFPA guidelines to explain the accident and hold a department or individual accountable. For example, the PPE I wear is from 2004, I can use it, but if I get injured in it than a court will decide if it was my fault of the departments for issuing me the gear

      Unlike police vehicles; fire engines typically don't rack up that many miles per year, what CAN be a problem is having the engines/pumps running too many hours between maintenance. When I worked for a motorpool 30 years ago; we had a ca 1973 1 Ton 4WD International(?) pickup with less than 3K miles on the chassis, that's right, ca 1500 hundred miles per year. It sat a lot but, it was still maintained.

Just because the are on the heavy side doesn’t mean a thing our assistant chief fought fire in New Jersey and is about 285 pounds. Another neighbouring dept both chiefs are in the 300 and they are all paid. So I will stand for my Brothers and Sisters.
