      TrainsForever 2020 we have 40 year old Volunteer engines out here in Shawswick Indiana. And they look brand new. It’s bad that they’re old, but they do as much as the hydrants can out here. It’s good as a heritage fleet, but work perfectly out here.

      I'm from Troy (30 minutes north of Detroit), and they still have a couple rigs from the mid 1980s. As they're a volunteer department, the city is very stingy on what gets replaced, and when. Thankfully, the 2 units from the 80's are brush-type apparatuses and are not used all that much.

      As a Filipino and Watching the news too in my country. Everytime there’s a fire it’s not only Firefighters involved but also the populace. Some of them risk their lives really to help the firefighters even without equipment some even died because of it. But that highlights how bad the situation is here and we do not only use boot jackets and helmets but Gardening hoses and also water pails which we try to get from a river which is quite further from where the fire is in some cases.

    I ready a comment that this has been approved. This struck a cord with me. I’m a Chief in a small volunleer station I western canada who recently finally got an upgrade on our main pumper. We cover a VERY small village but have a large municipality plus in square miles we cover and our 1969 Ford/Tribault cab over was a big issue for response time. Luckily for us, fund raising and donations worked out. Sometimes the public is happier with donations that they know is going directly to a cause than a tax hike. But for an organization like this the long term revenue is probably more sustaining anyway.

      Indeed. Props to the firefighters that maintain(ed) it. Pride in your station is a big thing, and it warms my heart to see the old station, and the apparatus, in such good shape. This coming from the son of a (long deceased) Chicago Fire Department employee. I'm glad to hear they got their money, too - centrally locating a new fire station is vital. I hope they have the funding to keep at least one apparatus and/or a Squad (volunteers, perhaps, if it's not already a Volunteer department) at the old station for certain emergencies.

    Here in germany there are volunteer departments that don't even have a truck. They only have a small trailer with a pump, some hoses and a bit more equipment on it and in case of an emergency the nearest farmer uses his tractor to pull the trailer...

    • @theOiOis
      @theOiOis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, but those are really small fire departments in really small villages that, in most cases, are a part of bigger towns and bigger fire departments, and they are more like a support unit. They are not ment to fight a fire on their own, or responde to technical rescue. Their job is basically to establish water supplie from ponds, and rivers and if possible to secure nearby buildings.

    Here in Australia the state governments took over control and funding for the volunteer (auxilliary) fire services. They introduced a $30 "Fire service levy", which is a small price to pay for decent services.

    What does the size of station and trucks have to do with response times? Response time is the buzzword of funding. That topkick will keep up with the newest of trucks, and no trucks are blocked in, no doors are broken.
