At 39:00 when trading with roland he had a steel pickaxe. You didn't acknowledge he had it. Did you not notice or did you give up looking for it? Granted over 1500 gold I don't think you had enough. Perhaps that's why you didn't say anything about it.
I don't know what the cruel trait does specifically but if you take them over won't your control override his cruel trait? Especially if you run around gifting everyone items or something.

I feel sorry for Penelope getting kicked out. As far as I know elderly can't reproduce in this game. You probably need to adopt a new child instead. I'm not sure. Guess we'll find out soon.
