re practical applications - to get bacteria to do things like create solar biofuels, pull carbon dioxide from the air and convert it to useful products like ammonia, eat plastic, etc - lots of environmental apps, and medical ones too, like with vaccines as Craig Venter mentioned in the vid
Well, Craig isn't actually creating life like 3.7 billion years ago. He builds new genomes, which then have to be inserted into already existing bacteria. Only this way can these new life forms start to function. Yet, it's an unbeliavable breakthrough

@graphattic I agree that there is too little regulations in some areas. The reason that I mentioned Anthrax before is that it has a quality that smallpox does not have, and that is that it doesn't spread as rapidly; it is easy to handle and so on, I would doubt synthesized organism would have any chances to "go wild" so to speak. If it will be used to enginer bioweapons I would expect it to function more like a very cruel conventional weapon than an actual decease.
@Finiras No- a strand of DNA was decoded, stored in a computer, altered a bit, rebuilt by a machine in lots of little strands, stitched together, and then inserted in a yeast cell.
@neoaeonian Yours is an excellent question and probably approachable at least. Better to tackle your question than my question which was "Where to draw the line? or, "How far is too far?"
What this represents is the birth of an entirely new industry. From here on in we can now develop the tools required to solve problems we have now, and create the technologies we need for future endeavors. I think Craig Venter is a friggin' genius.
Be sure to keep in mind he has stated in multiple lines that the synthetic cell is not made from scratch. It is existing cell material being mixed together in a unique way. So no, they have not created life. They have merely altered it. In light of what they have done, I give them kudos. But as for creating life, they are only doing the same thing that scientists have been doing for years: altering already living material.
Uhh, no. They made their own genome, synthesized it and implemented that into a empty cell hull. That is basically creating life. The only thing here is the already existing empty cell hull. Which would take some work, but could also be synthesized. But what would be the point if it's readily available?
no they did something completely new. they transplanted the chromosomal DNA from one bacterium species to another. aditionally the transplanted DNA was not produced by its species of origin.
The scientists may not be particularly interested in playing god, but I bet my bottom dollar the war machine will when, if they haven't already, get their hands on it.

@@HeortirtheWoodwarden Hello, sorry I was rude. Nature is created and subordinate to the Source of everything, thus it undergoes 3 stages: creation, maintenance and dissolution. I agree. To me, the fact that scientists are saying they just created something is kind of funny. Its a misuse of the term. They merely copied & made changes to a design with already existing matter.

@Chumkil I've been reading the bible every day for four months now and I understand it pretty well at this point. Each gospel is an interpretation of each man's account. Granted only one of them can be right about each given story, but not all of them can be accurate about the entire account. It is up to the reader to take each account into consideration and ask God for a revelation of what the truth is.
@Rasayana85 Certainly a valid point as well, but I think atleast fear is still somewhat natural and sort of primordial as opposed to greed which is more or less intentional and even malicious. My point is that people don't choose to be afraid, but they do choose to be greedy. But then again... Excess can make any emotion venomous, so possibly that's a better underlying cause for both.

@graphattic All scientists aren't milk drinking and moral either. It's a standard that we can't expect from anyone. Also many of the companies that benefits from new techniques are University spin-of companies which are started up by the professors who was leading the research in academia. Also they often choose to employ the PhD's which were working in their research groups, because the PhD's already have the know-how. Does their moral change when they are subjugated to corporate conditions?
@KevinLounsberry We also don't have the time to reproduce processes that took millions of years and see them during our life times, that's why people like Craig do things like this which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that life can be made from some chemicals put together.
@graphattic First:A pharmaceutical patent lasts longer than other patents, and for good reasons. The research expenses are huge, and the income after marketing has to cover both the expenses for the drugs which made it to the market and and those which did not, including interests to any external investors. If what you say is true, why bother getting investors at all?
@Rasayana85 With that said: I would also like to see stronger regulations on conventional weapons. Any weapon is a potential weapon of mass destruction, given a sufficiently long life-time.
This is remarkable, I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. People creating life, I didn't think I would see it in my lifetime, but it really is inspiring. The possibilities seem endless, and if they can really create new species (for lack of a better word) in 24 hours, then a lot can be accomplished. Just wow.
@deanmullen10 It is. There's no such thing as a soul or spirit, we're just matter, that uses matter to create energy, (to move, to think, etc.) by eating, breathing, etc.. It is conscious. I'm sure even computers are conscious.
@radscorpion8 Final post: That's why I think Raeez is right..because synthetic life really does imply more than creating life with a helping hand, its literally creating life all at once. Therefore this should more correctly be described "transplanted synthetic DNA", rather than "synthetic cell" - also for practical reasons. As he wrote, what are you going to name it when they actually create life at the *most* basic level that leads to cell formation (synthetic abiogenesis?)
Metal Gear or Avatar? I don't know which one is more possible? The "plant" created to clean oil but was really used to build metal gear or the Navi from Avatar where we created an entirely different species to substitute for humans. Whatever, just some ideas that pop into mind.
Fantastic! (sarcasm) I bet nobody is going to worry about the copyrights involved. Hopefully the courts get on this or the company takes a benevolent proactiveness in sorting it out. Because with the watermark that means they can copyright life. It has already happened with seed companies.
@briantoye they coded the alphabet with 4 symbols ... a t c and g ... its similar to morse code ... for example aaaa is a, aaat is b, aaac is c, aaag is d, aata is e .. etc
@neoaeonian "I can't imagine that Bill chares the pain of the poor." "I can't imagine that Bill cares for the pain of the poor." See the difference? From my point of view he, and most people with him, is not a philanthropist. I would say that the label "philanthropist" implies a really high standard: you have to love people. I will watch some of his Ted talks. Might be a sobering experience, but then again: a lot of people can talk, so don't expect me to make up my mind anytime soon. Cheers!
@neoaeonian I think maybe one of the first applications could be using computers to establish "What If" scenarios, and then using cell farms to grow enough units and quantities for sample experimentation. This is already done using gene splicing within existing species, but the new approach would make it possible to engineer entirely new species to use as control units, enabeling them to exclude specific variables during testing. The result would be an unprecedented acceleration of research.
Someday, the next generation will ask us where we were when the first synthetic life form was created. Only 20,000 of us will be able to give them an answer.
Started with the DNA coding, built the chromosome, transplanted it into an existing bacterium and manipulating it. He didn't create life, this is a very bad attempt to take credit for creating life from chemicals, do the same experiment WITHOUT the DNA code and WITHOUT a living bacterium, and produce a living cell from chemicals alone, then you have something to claim, right now you are just playing with words, yeah, you are playing God with your DNA modifications, etc, but you are NOT creating life, but nice try...
@cheesynounou True. However I think the point is instead of burning more and more fossil fuels we could reuse what is already there. Instead of accumulating more C02 in the atmosphere, we could keep it at a more steady rate.
@captwasabi The first I heard about it was on a TV documentary a couple weeks ago called "Creating Synthetic Life" but it kind of surprises me too that it's not all over the place. I mean, it seems like something that knowing about should be unavoidable.

re practical applications - to get bacteria to do things like create solar biofuels, pull carbon dioxide from the air and convert it to useful products like ammonia, eat plastic, etc - lots of environmental apps, and medical ones too, like with vaccines as Craig Venter mentioned in the vid
You won't have any of these pesky worries when you wake up in a brand new synth body with your consciousness implanted into it courtesy of the WEF.
Bingo, you are right on...
Well, Craig isn't actually creating life like 3.7 billion years ago. He builds new genomes, which then have to be inserted into already existing bacteria. Only this way can these new life forms start to function. Yet, it's an unbeliavable breakthrough
Fascinating, another great achievement of science. :) And little scary... easily could be beginning of apocalyptic movie. :-)

Damn lecture notes to be hard to find. This is more like the numbers we are talking about:
Yr 1-2: Drug Discovery: $3 mil. 100 projects going for every drug to hit the market.
Yr 3-11: Clinical Trials: $225 mil. Most projects is never tested clinically because the companies cant afford the risk: After 5.5 years only 20 of these projects are competing to hit the market.
yeah Corona Virus here we go...
@graphattic
I agree that there is too little regulations in some areas.
I can create synthetic life. My shit moves on its own after I eat something made from Monsanto crops.
@Finiras No- a strand of DNA was decoded, stored in a computer, altered a bit, rebuilt by a machine in lots of little strands, stitched together, and then inserted in a yeast cell.

With all sympathies for your opinion, I do not think that greed is the greatest of our flaws, even if it ranks among the highest.
I would say that fear is the greatest of our pitfalls. Fear of each other, fear of the unknown and fear for our own livelihoods. How much suffering aren't we ready to impose on others because of it, and how much help couldn't we have given in spite of it?
Peace, and keep fighting the good fight.
I thought the good liar was my favorite paradox until I found the atheist who thinks he is God
Only monotheistic people would see things like that. Surely he can be a God. There's a God of wine for heaven's sake. Wine is basically just grapes and yeast, this is a bacteria (kind of). Both are microbial.
@@quentin-v9d If you think you are a god, that's one problem and if you see the right people, they'll probably give you drugs and a disability check. Note that the drug release here is after 11 years and that the expenses at that point is $250 mill.

After he had given away a huge amount of money, corresponding to a big part of his fortune, he did still have a huge amount of money left. Somewhere on the way he figured "this is enough from me" which could translate to " I deserve what I have left".

All scientists aren't milk drinking and moral either.
@graphattic
First:A pharmaceutical patent lasts longer than other patents, and for good reasons. The research expenses are huge, and the income after marketing has to cover both the expenses for the drugs which made it to the market and and those which did not, including interests to any external investors. If what you say is true, why bother getting investors at all?
@Rasayana85
With that said: I would also like to see stronger regulations on conventional weapons.

The "plant" created to clean oil but was really used to build metal gear
or
the Navi from Avatar where we created an entirely different species to substitute for humans.
Whatever, just some ideas that pop into mind.
