10-round max, slower loading, integral mag? _It's a 100 year old California-compliant handgun!_

Hawkeye 47 - You do realize that this won't end until your only choice is to get on your knees and take one in the temple, right? The death of a thousand cuts leads to banning rocks, sticks, cap guns, fists and feet as dangerous weapons in the hands of the undesirables (i.e., average citizens). You'll have to turn in your hands and feet at your nearest police station after the next Dems take over in CA.
Time to think about an exit strategy. Friendly states still exist!
      -

Dog of War - Might be, but that one would only be available in "free states". LOL
Seriously, states like CA and even some Counties have lists of acceptable firearms. Being so old, the Mauser pistols might be exempt, but each place is different. If you want one and your location permits it, go for it! Not sure of ammo cost though, might check that too.

Safety can be put on with the hammer cocked. You must pull back slightly on the hammer and then engage it. A two handed operation, but that is the design of the pistol.

I just bought a Bolo model. It is that brown, old gun color, the bore is shot out and needs relining. ($400) The Bakelite grips were loose, worn smooth and the screw was frozen solid. The upper is one SN while the lower is another. It has some pitting on the left side, but is a "shooter". I buy Tokarev ammo but replace the powder to a .30 Mauser level, it is way cheaper.

You can carry the Mauser c96 cocked and locked, 1911-style. With the hammer cocked, pull back on the hammer slightly and hold it down, then engage the safety. The safety is now engaged with the hammer locked. You can also lock the bolt open for loading single rounds: with the bolt locked back on an empty magazine, pull the trigger and lower the hammer partway, then allow the bolt to go forward; the bolt will stop its forward travel because the hammer is blocking it. Now you can feed individual rounds without a stripper clip. To make the pistol ready to fire, pull back on the bolt, then cock the hammer and release the bolt.

Awesome find MAC... but no way am I gonna find a deal like that 'round these parts. I really wanted one of these a while back, but any time I went on Gunbroker, there were either immaculate ones going for 2k+, or ones that went for $500-700, but had pitting so bad that you'd think the gun was hit by really fine shrapnel. Ended up just getting an airsoft replica to scratch the itch...

I think I get what *Rick Delve* is trying to say. He's just saying that if Greedo even thinks about drawing his gun on Han Solo, then Greedo's already lost because that's the guy Han is. No post-Special Edition corrections to satisfy both camps: Han shot, and Greedo was dead before his head hit the table.

I have only encountered one C96; that was on a Range in South Africa in 1976. The gun had been in the owner's family since his Grandfather carried it in the Boer War, against my Country (UK). The irony was not lost; it is great that we gun owners can transcend the past and enjoy the present.

to put the gun on the safety in the cocked position, you need to slightly pull the hammer back and move the safety lever forward/up. It is so-called "Third type " or the "New safety". And ,
if the open bolt is pulled further back, it will remain in the open position and will not close automatically during placing loose rounds one by one in the magazine .

Great video Tim, I feel the same way about my Fin M39 Mosin. Such a great rifle to shoot and when I striped the rifle apart I found out the receiver was made in 1896. I picked mine up at a local gun shop for about $110 which was a few years ago and I knew then that it was a great price. The employee's at the shop didn't even know what model # the mosin was. They told me it was a Fin Guard M28/30 which would have been even more awsome but I'm still very happy with what I got, so maybe that's why I got such a great deal. Keep up the great work bro.

My dad was far-sighted enough to buy several C96's back in the 70s when they could be had for less than 100$ at gun shows. Thankfully, he left a will and the guns went to myself and others in the family that care about them. I have a sister who would have turned them over to be destroyed

Now it's $1500 on average for a beaten up used Mauser C96 and if you are lucky to get some rifling. You really have to dig deep to get one in decent condition that isn't going to cost you over $2000 in today's market. Wish a company would start making reproductions, start with .22lr and if the demand is there go up to full tooling to 9mm, .45 ACP and .30 Mauser.

Wow that is an absolute steal. I think my C96 was about $1300 and I'm pretty sure mine is in worse shape, however mine did also come with an original Mauser stock and leather carrier, so I can't complain too much.

I picked one up for about $450 and did a rust blue job after having to weld up and completely re-shape the grip frame back to original because it was totally rusted out. Put in a new hammer wishbone spring (I found a guy that was making them) and the old girl shoots great. Just be careful of that bolt block and check for fractures. It's the only thing keeping the bolt from flying into your eyeball on cycling.

Recently purchased a 1938 numbers matching Russian tt33. The history with these old guns is the greatest part. Shooting is awesome also but sure wish these guns could tell their story

Definitely a worthwhile pistol to buy. I'm personally way more into vintage guns than modern ones, though something this old wouldn't be very practical for carrying on you. (unless you're doing it for the lols). It's major down-sides would have to be the awkward reloading and size. Ergonomically it's not bad, though it is heavy. It shoots a nice cartridge which basically looks like a Tokarev round but has a higher velocity. I've seen a C96 shoot a 9mm thru a 7.62 barrel without taking any damage to the gun, which is pretty impressive. They are sturdy guns and they look and feel great. I would definitely recommend buying this over a fancy new glock or tactical 1911 because it's value is only going to go up, assuming you don't do anything stupid to it. (re-bluing is typically fine, though if it doesn't need it it's best to leave it in original finish). You can enjoy these pieces of history and shoot them too, and if you ever need money somewhere down the line you can sell them and maybe get multiple-times what you paid for them if you wait long enough.

Great video. This is kinda where I'm at with my collecting. I'd rather buy surplus or something oddball vs something brand new. I've especially been focusing on surplus pistols as of late. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the Enfield video, I have a soft spot for those rifles and own several variations.

You absolutely can put the safety on while the hammer is cocked: pull back slightly on the hammer and the safety can be engaged.
I bought my c96 bolo from a pawn shop for $300. Exterior was 100% rusted, bad pitting in a couple places, bore shot out, extractor missing, magazine spring broken, grips worn smooth and looked like a beaver chewed them. Replaced the missing/broken parts, got new grips, cleaned all the rust off, just need to get a stock and have someone reblue it and reline the barrel. I'd rather have a full-sized pistol than the bolo, but beggars can't be choosers.

Hello and thanks for this video. I read somewhere, and along ago that among the famous that used this gun, was Sir. Winston Churchill that on Boers war saved himself by using one. He even told this to his mom, in a letter, or so I read!!! 😮❤And what a gun, you got there!! 😮😮❤❤❤

I have not found a C96 under $1000 bucks, mint or not. However the best collectible gun I ever got was my 1911 Swiss Carbine. It was 300 bucks and I got an all matching one built in 1916.

If the sear notch is worn, simply removing the stripper clip may fire the gun over and over. :)
These guns are great fun with the shoulder stock attached, but watch your thumb when the bolt comes back.

Just bought one of these to complete my mini-Mauser collection. Got a K98 rifle, an M1934 pistol and now a C96. Guess I still need an HSC, and maybe some foreign contract Mauser rifles... but that's a whole vast world of collecting. I'm probably going to go for a Swedish contract as well as the Czech Vz. 24. Probably a WW1-era Gewehr-98 as well.

You can engage the safety while the hammer is cocked, that model has the NS on the hammer, meaning that the hammer must be pulled back further from the cocked position and then the safety can be engaged. Looks like a nice Wartime commercial. Congrats on getting an amazing price for a sweet gun.
