Yes he did sometimes, but there’s nothing wrong with that. It happens to the best, he was a human being he made mistakes to.
He’s dancing and singing while also trying to maintain breath control on top of all of that. I admire his hard work to be quite honest. He was a still a magnificent performer overall.

The man wasn’t JUST a singer. He was AN ENTERTAINER. It’s not like he’s standing still and singing. He’s dancing and moving around the stage. When you do that you get winded, and it’s going to take away from the clarity of your voice.

Michael was always fabulous and fantastic vocally even at not so good times ! There's no such word as "worst" when it comes to Michael !
The History Tour clip you play early on is from Munich, during which time Michael had bad Laryngitis. Michael's live vocals suffered in general from the nineties onward -- he does allude to the difficulty he starts to have with singing live during the 1992 Dangerous Tour rehearsals at Neverland Ranch, saying "You can't do this everyday without your voice being affected."
His Lupus probably played a role in it as well -- it can cause severe inflammation around a sufferer's lungs, and if I'm remembering correctly, Michael's autopsy did reveal that his lungs were in very bad shape. But that aside, his Laryngitis made his vocals especially raw during those Munich shows in 97.
The Dangerous Tour was pretty much 50% live, 50% lip-synced, but since he was only doing the tour to raise money for charity, I always let him off on that one. ;-)
Also, the clip of Another Part of Me which you show wasn't Michael forgetting the lyrics -- that was Kansas City, and Michael stopped singing because he realised that his pants zipper was down. So he stopped singing for a couple of seconds while he zipped them back up.
I'm just being a pedantic fanboy though. X-)
As much as I Love Michael, and I really admire all of the Humanitarian endeavors he pursued on the History Tour, the fact that he had gotten to a point where singing live had become such a challenge kind of makes me wish he hadn't done it. It kind of sours his legacy as a live performer for me -- he went out on a tour which I don't think represents him at the apex of his live vocal abilities. :-/
I really wish he could've either finished the Dangerous Tour as he'd originally planned, or given those two "One Night Only" concerts in New York in December of 95. I think that they'd have been something a lot more special for Michael to have gone out on that the History Tour ultimately was.
That's just my opinion though.
He never rehearsed in neverland, that was a rumour. I assume you mean the early 92 rehearsals in May, I'm sure those where at an aircraft hanger like the HWT ones was
I would have preferred to see him quit touring after dangerous and stick to one off performances, although I do still enjoy the majority of the HWT. He changed in his performance after 1999, the 2002 Apollo theatre looks like old MJ I wish the full show will eventually leak.
I think when he did the Jackson 5 medley on History tour it sounded pretty good just like he normally did.
@Son Goku I agree that those are my two favourite shows from the History Tour. But I'm still not really a fan of the tour in general. I do really admire all of the Humanitarian endeavors Michael committed to throughout the tour though.
@@supersmashmaster43 I think it varied from night to night, but it still didn't have the same level of energy that it had, had on his previous tours. Part of that is just the fact that Michael was in his late thirties at that point, and he had been performing since he was a small child. It's obviously just more difficult to maintain the same standards -- especially when they're set as high as Michael had set his -- as you get older.

There is a big diff between recording in a studio where the environment is controlled and set, vs real life singing and dancing at the same time. Also, the Dangerous era with that rainbow reflective jacket, and singing "Jam" is such a definitive Dangerous era/early 90s moment, in my opinion. love it.

Most of the artist today only sing with auto tune or lip sync in concerts. Michael Jackson sang and danced. All that dancing makes you lose some breath. Either way it was still good. I watched most of these in another video and I have that History Outfit.
1. Wanna Be Startin' Something - the concert version is faster, ang He's singing live and dancing (which is very hard), that's why he sounds so fatigue (and probably it's his continuous concert so his voice may be a torn).
2. Michael used to forget the lyrics for his songs, usually while playback was on he used to cover his mouth with a hand, which always looked funny and adorable for me at least ^^ He had to improvise :)
3. MSG 2001 - Michael was probably having issues with his listening, he often said in interviews that he never got used to earphones, cus he was used to perform with speakers as listening.
4. Scream - well, someone is sleeping behind the mixer.
5. Another Part Of Me -The zipper ^^ - he didn't forgot lyrics back then yet, but he had unzipped pants :D
6.Thriller - at least this time that somebody wasn't sleeping behind the mixer ;) Quick reaction :)
7. Jam - this was interesting, like the mixer wasn't sure which was playback or live XD

I am a vocalist and would bet money he had pharyngitis or laryngitis in the first clip. It is impossible to sing well under those circumstances because the vocal chords are too swollen to close properly when you phonate, thus the rasp and uncontrolled squeaks. He was so good to his fans to still perform if he was ill ❤ No matter what, he’s always the best.

Watch The MJ vocal technique video it shows that as a singer his vocal peak was during childhood because by the time he became a teen there was already too much irreparable vocal damage that led to that growling raspy style he developed. Remember MJ was initially called the new Stevie Wonder in the 70s but his vocals were too shredded to soar like Stevie did, hence MJ focused on perfecting his stage act and dancing.

But even when his voice is really bad, he still sings in tone. Like he’s not hitting awkward notes all he needed was some vocal rest that’s all it was.
Because later on when he did, this is it and you saw the rehearsals for that his voice sounded like it always goes on record. I saw him in concert twice during the BAD era and he was fantastic.
