I purchased the 1rst gen Crv in 1997. 126hp 132trq. 5-speed. I drove the heck out of it. 100% Japan made. My kids were 3 & 5 yrs. 12 years later it became my 17 yr old daughters 1rst car- a manual she drove it for 2.5 yrs and then my son got it for his 1rst own car. With 170k miles on it. He drove it for 5 years with the same clutch. Some rust but loved it Mi snow storms. No Abs tsc or airbags. He kept it for winter motoring only Dec thru March and brought a lowered 2003 Si hatch shortthrow Vtec 8k redline w 32k miles for $5500 cause the owner was a 17 yr old kid that lost his license for 5 years because of 120 mph tickets in a 70. My son still has both the crv and Si and is looking for a 2016 Subie Forester 2.0t 258hp Trq? . 6 speed Manual. The moral of this storyTeach your kids young how to drive a manual. They’re fun, I’m getting into a new Subaru Crosstek 6-speed for winter rides and am keeping my 2006 base A3 2.0T 6-speed hatch. 112k miles ( GTI in Audi guise) as they’re not being built anymore. Subie for duty running .Audi for naughty runnin!
I might get mocked for this but I had no idea CR-Vs were available in a manual transmission. After seeing you drive one, i'd get one for sure. Neat vehicle you got there. Keeping the manuals alive also deserves a kudos.
Jack Box Thanks man, actually a lot of people are surprised that this car came with the manual option in the first and second gen CRVs. It's been very reliable and a joy to drive as always. Manual is really the way to go with these cars to get the most out of them!
better mpg, more fun to drive & a bit more reliable, plus 1 extra gear over the 4 spd automatic. It's the perfect car for camping, with a picnic table in the back and air compressor connection to blow up inflatable boats and air beds
speaking of crvs and manuals, my mom just got a 2020 executive trim crv in a 6sped manual. Didint knew that the manual still was an option. This is her 3rd crv
Bout to buy one tomorrow. 98, it's got 256k and it sounds just like this one as far as how it runs and shifts. I love the amazing pieces of machinery honda put out in the 90s and early 2000s. Fun, practical, full of more features than you'd think and almost impossible to kill.
Best car I ever owned. Bought one brand new, exactly like this one, in 2000 and sold it in 2009 after 280.000 miles on it. No major issues, just regular maintenance. Great little monster!
Nice car, currently own an automatic Mitsubishi Montero Sport and I was thinking of changing to a manual car. I think I'll go with a CR-V because of this video.
I have officially reached 300k miles today! Love this damn thing. Although, I do have the notorious passenger CV Axle wobble that seems to only occur at 80-85mph for some reason which I'm currently trying to address still.
I have a 2000 Honda CR-V EX that looks exactly like this, but is has a 4 Speed Automatic Transmission instead. Has nearly 280K miles and still RUNS and DRIVES just as good when it was brand new.
Beautiful car, and very nice camera work. This model up to 2005 along with old Lexus RX models are the Best compact SUVs ever... But I love the little engine on this beauty, I have one!!
I know what you mean, I am currently in an 06 RX400H with 150k mi and can get about the same gas mileage.. not sure how well it would do offroad compared to the crv... but I have always wanted a 00-01 crv. Been thinking of trading mine in for a minty 06 se with only 60k mi and a 5mt... but the first gen look more appealing to me.
still got that b series roar ! after owning one i now see why why people would want the b20z 99-01 crv engine in a civic. my friends are surprised that i have a suv that redlines at 7k
vwestlife Not a good idea - brake pads are a lot cheaper than replacing the clutch ! I was also taught that in driving school to shift down instead using the brakes when coming to a stop. I learned it the hard way that that wasn't smart when my Toyota Corolla's clutch started slipping and I had to have it replaced at only 70,000 km (43,600 miles) fo $1000 !
vwestlife Yeah I understood what you meant, I used to put it right in neutral when I first was driving manual, but I've gotten much better since I've started and have actually been using that technique you mentioned. I just let the engine drag the speed down when stopping and it works quite well. I do not use the clutch to brake at all however so no need to worry about wearing the clutch down. :)
Awesome video man! I bet people would love to see an update video on this car, maybe with a voiceover this time, perhaps improved quality video (not that there's anything wrong with this however it is a little low-def), talking about the features and also about how reliable it is, what you like/dislike about it, what kind of maintenance you've had to do, etc. Btw I'm jealous I'd wish I'd gotten a CR-V from this generation over my 99 Toyota rav4... My rav4 is essentially the same car as the CR-V from this generation (mine is manual too) but the CR-V has more power and even slightly better mpgs. I think a 98-01 CR-V will be my next car, should I need one. I know one thing like about my rav is the glass headlights; no "fogging" like the plastic ones do ;)
2000 and 2001 crv are basically identical. the other ones are slightly different in terms of appearence and features though. (i think some feautures are different) EDIT: IM WRONG THE GEAR LEVER IS IN A DIFF POSITION LOL (for some reason)
+perlewitzaudio my Dad is 96 now an decided to pass on his 2000 CRV SE AWD to me...it only has 30k miles on it an he kept it in his garage all this time... tires are new....it's the gold colored one...just wish it had the manual 5 speed instead of the 4 speed automatic but it's a great car....the 2000 's and newer models are the ones to get...the prior years didn't have the 146 hp engine/ 6200 rpm's nor did they have the ABS system.....that really made a difference for this generation CRV..gonna tint the front windows....i'm looking forward to reaching the 155,000 mile mark...
David James Well, it definitely sounds like you have a true gem there! For it to only have 30k on the odometer is even more incredible! Congrats on your "new" CRV and I'm sure it will give you years and years of reliable trouble-free operation! :)
I'm about to buy this vehicle anything I should worry about or know beforehand I took it on a test drive today and it seemed to be perfectly fine engine was rebuilt b18 with vtec trans was rebuilt 500 miles ago and everything else looks fine
There’s really not much that goes wrong on these, the biggest thing is to look for rust underneath and also make sure suspension components are in good shape. Mechanically, of course it’s good idea to check the fluids and all. But these are very bullet-proof drivetrains! You shouldn’t have any major issues with it.
@@perlewitzaudio thank you I will definately do so before I buy it I have to wait another week and a half or so to get the money but since he is a family friend he will hold it for me
I currently have a 05 CRV manual (107k miles) and it's amazing. Does yours have a loud humming noise when you rev up to 3.5k rpm? Hitting 3.5k rpm in any gear, I get a loud humming noise, I'm thinking it's v tec, but I'm not too sure.
I can’t choose between manual or automatic! I live in the cities. I have a manual Honda Civic LX sedan. But wanted something to drive in the winter. But I can’t decide!
I don't even keep up with maintenance besides oil changes and tire changes and it's still going at 261K miles, all original parts too 1999. brakes still work excellent.
I'm thinking about buying the exact same car with 230k on it. Would you suggest that? Also how is the clutch and is the b20b similar to the b20z in terms of power, or is it significantly slower?
I've seen these CRVs go past 300,000 miles with no major problems as long as the timing belt and clutch and basic suspension components are maintained. The clutch on these cars are very very light and easy to operate without any major fatigue. As terms of power, I am not sure how the b20z in the CRV compares to the b20b.
The B20z is slighlty better but its not that big of a deal, these cars aren't fast nor are they meant to be. I would say go for one that has less miles just because you'll love the car so much you'll want the most out of it. That being said, where I live these b20z longblocks go for about 800 dollars with ~40-60k miles on them. These cars tend to leak oil from the valve cover, and the timing belt goes out around the 200k mark. I would ask for service records and if neither of those have been done... run.
Yes sir, because the CRV lacks a true center console the shifter goes all the way to the floor, thus having to be much longer to be comfortable enough to be easily reached by the driver.
perlewitzaudio this description doesn't have any info on which type of gearbox these crv use. l was looking for a gearbox code or something of that matter.
242taliban Ohh okay, I misunderstood you before. My apologies! I am actually not sure of the code that this gearbox is of but I believe it is a similar one to the Honda Civic considering the CRV is based off of that platform. There maybe a code or number online for you to look at on this transmission make?
I totally agree haha. When I first got this car and started learning to drive stick, I was stalling it pretty much every day until I got the hang of it. The clutch feels a little bit numb at first compared to other cars and there's not much torque low down.
A clutch has a bite point and either engages and holds well and delivers torque to the drive wheels or it slips and needs replacing. The key to driving a manual car is to match the engine revs with the gear and road speed/road condition as you re-engage the clutch. So disengage clutch (push pedal in past bite point) and foot off accelerator - select gear- re-engage clutch (let pedal out past bite point) together with applying correct engine revs. If slowing (unless going uphill) use foot brake to reduce speed prior to changing gear, but still apply correct engine revs on re-engaging clutch.
Billy Higgins Yes, they are very solidly built vehicles with great longevity if you take care of them. That's why I love Honda! Congrats on your new purchase and I'm sure it will give you many more years of reliable service to come!

+Proud More Hi there, the choice between an automatic or manual all depends on different conditions. The manual will give you better gas mileage and is (in my personal opinion) a lot more fun to drive. However, if you are in the city with stop and go traffic a lot, I would probably recommend the automatic in that case. But for overall all around driving, I personally prefer the manual option. It really all depends on the person though. If you do get a manual transmission, make sure that the clutch is well taken care of and doesn't slip and make sure the shifter goes into all gears properly. If you get an automatic, make sure the transmission doesn't slip and it shifts nice and smooth. Hope this help! ;)

Manual definetely
If your a lazy American then go with automatic if your an enthusiast and really want the most control out of your car get a manual
I recommend manual
Automatic easy to drive but less MPG.
Manual more MPG and total control of Speed and Braking but it sucks driving manual in traffic jam.
+Gabriel Cornejo especially if it's stop and go creeping uphill
That's a big gear stick. It looks taller than the one on my 00 5 speed accord
Yes sir, because the CRV lacks a true center console the shifter goes all the way to the floor, thus having to be much longer to be comfortable enough to be easily reached by the driver.
+perlewitzaudio I've seen some buses that are manual and the gear stick is ridiculous

I learned to drive stick on this generation crv and it was pretty damn hard lol
I totally agree haha. When I first got this car and started learning to drive stick, I was stalling it pretty much every day until I got the hang of it. The clutch feels a little bit numb at first compared to other cars and there's not much torque low down.
A clutch has a bite point and either engages and holds well and delivers torque to the drive wheels or it slips and needs replacing. The key to driving a manual car is to match the engine revs with the gear and road speed/road condition as you re-engage the clutch. turned my crv into a JEEP removable doors, lift kit, big tires, lots of off roading.
Hay is there a clutch to press on
Do you still have this car?
