"who is this guy?". That is the late, great, Neil Peart. Arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time! Since you like the backstory stuff, there's a documentary you should check out called, "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage". It's an incredible insight to RUSH and how they all came to be RUSH. It's a great documentary anyway, but if you like Rush at all, it's fantastic. When you get to "know" these guys a little better... it makes you love the band and music even more. 3 great guys who have a beautiful friendship with one another. A lifetime of comradery.

Welcome to Rush! The band had a 40 plus year career.
The guitarist is Alex Lifeson. He is the friend Geddy was talking about. Alex changed his last name as his Serbian name was too hard to pronounce. I believe Lifeson is the English translation.
Alex is a real jokester! All of the guys in the band have/had a great sense of humour.
Neil Peart is considered one of if not the best drummers in rock. He was also the main lyrist. Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020.

Don't forget Neil Peart's drum solo from Frankfurt if you want to see a "REAL" drum kit. LOL
Two sayings about Neil Peart (pronounced like "Peer-t" according to Neil himself.
      1) "Your favourite drummer's favourite drummer is Neil Peart."
      and
      2) "Most drummers use metronomes to keep time. Metronomes use Neil Peart to keep time."
It is said that Neil can keep four separate beats (with different time signatures) at the same time. I don't doubt it.

Three accomplished, influential musicians that were great friends for the whole lifespan of the band. Sadly, Neil Peart died a few years ago. He's your favorite drummer's favorite drummer.
They never compromised. They never gave up. They did what they wanted until their last recording, and sold out arenas until their last show. In my opinion, they are the greatest band ever. Dive deep and enjoy the ride. I also recommend the "Beyond the Lighted Stage" documentary.

The three things you need to know about Rush. The songs and musicianship are outstanding, the band usually has something to say in the lyrics and Rush imo are the greatest band ever to watch live. For a three piece band, their sound is huge. Beside the obvious bass, drums and guitar, all three members add to the sound by playing/triggering sounds with their feet. The drummer (Neil Peart) adds to the sound by playing other percussion instruments and for the most part is the lyricist of the band. Geddy Lee's job on stage would be pretty hard to duplicate considering how much he does (singer, keyboards, bass). Alex Lifeson imo is the glue that makes Rush work in their overall sound and is a huge complement to the rhythm section of the band. His job is to add the melodic flavors in the songs. He fills the melodic space with creative riffs and solos. Every member of the band is well respected and highly regarded by their peers.

Neil Peart is the drummer. He is one of the BEST to ever play drums! Buddy Rich would be proud. I saw them during this tour in Austin, Frank Erwin Center. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. It was my wife's first concert ever and she was awesomely amazed. These guys were the real deal with no b.s. but pure talent and musical geniuses. You don't see bands like this anymore.

Great reaction, Rush is a deep rabbit hole! Try Spirit of Radio, Working Man live in Cleveland, Xanadu live in Montreal 1981, YYZ live in Rio just to name a few. I think for the song Tom Sawyer, the studio version would be better. Although they still performed at a high level well into their 50's, the original is a better representation of the song. But great live band, all accomplished musicians, and yes you observed the interactions onstage. They all had a great camaraderie.

Nice reaction to one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Each one of these guys are highly skilled on their instrument's of choice. Rush is considered to be one of the most influential progressive rock bands, in fact many rock stars and even several entire bands count Rush among their biggest musical influences. These same three guys played together for over forty years. The drummer is Neil Peart and he is considered by many to be the best rock drummer of all time. Neil plays a huge custom hybrid drum kit with both electronic and acoustic drums. You will never see another drum set like his. Back before the days of electronic drums his kit included many auxiliary percussion instruments such as tonal cow bells and wood blocks, xylophone, chimes and tubular bells. Neil also wrote almost all of the lyrics. These guys have a huge and varied catalogue of music that evolved through the years.
You should check out "YYZ live in Rio", "Working Man live in Cleveland 2011" and "Xanadu" from the 1981 "Exit Stage Left" tour. Also you mentioned how famous musicians have no real privacy. Neil wrote an amazing song on that very subject called "Limelight". You should really check that one out too.

I saw them on that tour in Jax, FL. One of the things about Rush is they can reproduce what they do in the studio live. Seen many bands that use session musicians in the studio along with an insane amount of layered tracks and can't pull that same sound off on stage.
The fact that all 3 of them are world-class musicians helps.

Well Done!! It's nice to see a reactor actually do a bit of research when reacting to a band for the first time. (Very few reactors do this). RUSH performed together for over 40 years before calling it a day in 2016. Sadly, drummer Neil Peart passed away in 2020 but Geddy and Alex perform together from time to time, (although not as RUSH). "Working Man", "Limelight", "La Villa Strangiato", "Red Barchetta", and "Xanadu" are some tracks from RUSH you will enjoy! ☮

Sad to say we lost him in 2020 to brain cancer. I had to the privilege to see them 3 times and each time was outstanding.. I always wonder how Alex feels he is a world class guitarist (he is in my top 10 favorites), but he is in a band with arguably the best drummer an bassist on earth. The most talented band to ever form. This tour was when Geddy's voice was showing his age but they still sound great - the musicianship never dropped off. I will for ever be grateful for seeing them a half dozen times and I just wish it could have been more. I am so glad these three found each other so we could all be blessed with this great music - there is none better. I have often said "Bad RUSH is still great music!" If 40 years they made music that ranged from great to incredible.

A note on Geddy Lee…His real name was Gary Lee Weinrib. His friends started calling him Geddy as a joke because that’s what it sounded like when him
mom would yell “Gary” with her thick eastern-european accent. At one point, they needed stage names so we went with Geddy Lee. Just a sign that they didnt take themselves too seriously. You should check out the studio version of this song - it sounds a lot better as this is hard for Geddy to sing & play bass on. This sounded ok, but the studio version is much better. If you want the ultimate Live Rush experience, watch YYZ from Rush in Rio…you are welcome very much!😎

As you've read, the members of Rush were the best of friends, having played together as "Rush" for 40 years (Neil was considered "the New Guy," since he joined the band before recording their second album.) Alex, the guitarist, is just goofy. If you look at the top of his amplifiers, you'll find dinosaurs and Mr. Potato Head. At 8:25 in your video, there's an upward shot of Alex, and you'll see his "groupies," a bunch of barbie dolls, holding up post-it notes! Because, Alex, like Geddy & Neil, were all dedicated family men (even though they once toured with Kiss!), and Alex's tech thought Alex needed groupies. To find out just how goofy Alex is, check out Rush's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I first attended a Rush concert in 1977, and saw them (I think, I've lost count) about 25 times over the years.

Loved that you put the interview! I recommend "Working Man- Live in Cleveland". They're pretty normal & goofy guys that happen to be musical geniuses. I prefer to watch them live. Neil Peart is the drummer & is iconic (writes most of the lyrics, which are incredible) You should watch his drum solo - Live from Frankfurt. You're going to get a ton of suggestions, and every one will be great. "La Villa Strangiato" (instrumental), "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left album, "YYZ" Live in Rio (instrumental). "2112" is 20 minutes. I look for people reacting to Rush, and found you this way. It will be fun to watch you go down the Rush rabbit hole.

Let me start by saying I liked this reaction for many reasons. I have watched a few of these reaction videos on Rush as I basically grew up with their music after first hearing them on the Old grey Whistle Test back in 1977 and they are by far my favourite band. You stand out from the others in the way you approached the task starting with Geddy's interview and quickly realising how close these three were with this one video view. Remember this three piece lasted over four decades with the same three guys. Health issues with Neil (He has now passed) basically forced retirement as they would not continue as Rush without any one of the three. They 'made it' through hard work in the face of savage reviews from the music media of the day touring essentially for 3 years non stop in the USA they won over the fans who by word of mouth got them the following they deserved and it snowballed from there. Rush come in at all levels with a plethora of music covering all subjects under the sun written/composed over 4 decades. You can just listen to the well played intricate music executed to perfection or you can follow each performer/instrument to be blown away with their ability and skills. You can go even deeper into the cleverly written lyrics to unravel the meaning of the songs and experience profound emotional feelings and memories as you work out the messages (vibes) they are sending. The more you listen to Rush the more you get what they are about. Instruments played live on some of their songs are Alex = 6 string + 12 string + Taurus pedals. Geddy = Bass + 6 string + Taurus + keyboards + vocals. Neil = Everything percussion including electronic kits and more. None of this gear is for show. It is all used on stage live. Apart from being superb musicians and composers they are (were) three very descent human beings who have enhanced my life dramatically. Either way in my opinion you get more for your money from Rush than any other band on the planet. All this from 3 very special people and there would be no Rush without either one of them. Each bring their own unique talents to form magical moments for all us fortunate Rush fans to savour. Niels lyrics would not have stood out without the genius of Geddy and Alex's composing skills. Geddy's voice, bass and synth playing skills, Alex's pioneering guitar sound, tones, ideas, styles and skills combined with Neil's exceptional drumming and lyrical prowess were the perfect cocktail for a truly momentous period in modern music history. Have I exaggerated? gone too far? Not at all, Rush are the real deal and don't let anyone tell you different. Suggest you listen to the two part Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage (which is on A Farewell to Kings album) then Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (which is on the Hemispheres album) This work takes you on a journey of Science fiction mixed with Greek Mythology and for me is Rush at their very best. Here are links to these vids which importantly have lyrics, enjoy.

Love your question about the drummer mid video "Who Is This Guy". HIs name is Neal Peart and and pleased you got to him. He is widely considered the best rock drummer EVER. By the way he also writes most of the lyrics. He has earned the nickname "The Professor".

Great to see your intro in experiencing the Rush train. Welcome aboard!!!! Great reaction man!!! Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever. Pure musicianship and artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them.
I would definitely recommend the following list in continuing upon your Rush journey: All of these are fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥
    - Working Man...Live in Cleveland from 2011 (original studio version was in 1974)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's.
    - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.
    - YYZ...Live from Rio 2002 (instrumental) - original was 1981 - RIO WAS ROCKIN!!!!
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
    - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
    - Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
    - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
    - Freewill...Live 2011 Time Machine Tour - original was 1980
    - Fly by Night - original was 1975
    - Leave that Thing Alone - Live 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
    - Malignant Narcissism and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
    - Tom Sawyer - studio version. Geddy's voice was remarkable!!!! A little faster tempo than this later live version.
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

Welcome to RUSH. 3 Great Musicians and 3 great friends who just loved making music. Always pay attention to their lyrics there is almost always a deeper message to the song. "His mind is not is not for rent to any god or government" that line from this song is just as relevant today as it was 40 some years ago when Neil wrote the song.

Great recognition of the drummer's talent and kit. The official video of Tom Sawyer done in "le studio" is a recommended watch for comparison. They were an incredible band.
    Reaction recommendations:
    Limelight video
Xanadu live All The World's a Stage video
    YYZ Live in Rio video
    2112 comic book style video
    Spirit of Radio animated video
Working Man Live in Cleveland video

Named a few of many. They never disappoint.

Did you notice the rotisserie ovens behind Geddy? Those were another good example of their sense of humour, added to their stage setup when he started plugging his bass guitar into the arena's sound system and they needed something to visually balance the huge stacks of amps on Alex's side of the stage; other shows featured washer-dryers, vending machines, and a popcorn popper. Okay now, if you'd like to see another great performance off Moving Pictures, the same album as Tom Sawyer, I'd like to recommend The Camera Eye from the Time Machine Tour. Cheers from Toronto!

I like how you included the interview. We know some reactors do research and others do it cold. I like both styles. I honestly enjoyed your reaction to the interview almost as much as the performance. It set the tone for you and made you wonder what you were going to see. Those of us who love Rush, love hearing him talk about his beginnings, even if we've heard it before. It also sets you apart from other reactors. Another 3-piece band that likes to have fun is ZZ Top! If you want to start a 3-Piece Playlist, I'm sure we could come up with more suggestions. :)

You just gotta be there live. This video sound doesn’t do justice. Geddy’s voice began showing his 40 yr career of singing prog rock. But they only quit as they had to due to Neils personal tragedy of losing his wife and daughter. Once for a 5 yr break. They toured and continued to put out good music until Neils passing. The Professor he was called. Not only a genius at the drums...but he wrote all the lyrics. There is no replacing any of them. Check out their catalog. Iconic classics that continue to gather new audiences. Good music is timeless.

I've been a fan of them for over 4 decades and I can never hear them again for the first time so seeing reactions like these is the closest I can get. I sometimes wonder how my "adult" ears would take it in since I was exposed to them at such an early age...

The original is incredible. The interview was really cool; I've never seen it, and I've loved these guys since the 1980s. I don't usually sub on a first watch of a reactor, but I love that you included the opening, and you have a nice persona and screen presence. So, a quick sub for ya. Thanks for a great reaction.
