    I'd say the biggest thing Ghost Game has going for it in terms of pacing and structure, is that it always manages to keep the audience guessing about what will happen next. It's certainly not as straightforward and predictable compared to say, 2020. They do a good job in not spoiling things in advance such as new evolutions.

    i feel like Ghost Game is slowly getting ready for something big, the seeds are already there and planted with the mystery of GulusGammamon, the black variants digimon in the background, and the potential return of some previous enemies in a "sinister six" type team-up

    Ghost Game is very unpredictable. We truly never know what comes next or even how the episode will end. It is messing with a lot of typical norms other series made us get used to. But I think that is the biggest strength of Ghost Game and what makes us really look forward to the next episode because truly anything could happen.

  • @Matiasfv

    about the slow plot of the series, I wanted to mention I didn't expect any plot at all before the show even aired.
    The thing with ghost game Is that the show was planned as an episodic anime from the start. That's what the creatives said in interviews before the show begun airing, and by that they meant more episodes that your typical digimon season. Ghost game is basically a monster of the week show, but I'm glad we are still getting some minor plot related things happening in the background. From the looks of it, I assume we'll get some real plot at some point, but the writers sure are taking their time.
    I like ghost game, the setting, the themes and the characters are so good aswell, It's a shame they took the episodic route
    Another thing said in that interview, and I can clearly see that now, they didn't want people that skipped several episodes in between to feel lost after returning to the anime. And that tells you a lot about how this season was planned. It seems they didn't have enough faith they'd keep the viewers if they did a plot driven show and they took the safer route.
    I wonder if that will change in the future, maybe in the second half of the series, because we are still getting set ups for future events despite what they said about ghost game and its conception, like Gulus Gammamon, Blacktailmon and his presumed duty of sending either lost digimon, digimon who cause disturbance in the real world or digitamas to the Digital World, someone or something (semi confirmed by Darklizardmon) that has been throwing digimon against their will the the real world, Hiro's father and his involvement in everything and the black variant digimon appearing.

    • @Matiasfv
      @Matiasfv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This was in the translator's notes of that specific interview.
      Ghost Game is referred to as having an “話完結” (“ichi-wa kanketsu“) structure, literally meaning “resolved in one episode”, referring to a format in which some major subplot must be introduced and resolved in each episode, making it easier for newcomers to jump in at any time or miss an episode without getting lost or turned off by cliffhangers; ongoing subplots or arcs that span several episodes are possible, but each individual episode’s immediate plot cannot be overly dependent on them to be understandable. Some Digimon series prior to Ghost Game are often said to have used this structure for various portions, but none of them had particularly advertised themselves on having it as a core format. The aforementioned Kitaro was also notable for having this format

  • @PunoNgBuhay
    @PunoNgBuhay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    “Ghost Game is weirdly quiet about what tricks it has up its sleeves.”
    If I may, I think this is actually a very intentional thing on Ghost Game’s part. You mentioned before that statement that Adventure, 02, and Tamers were willing to discuss to the audience what the end goal was early on.
    However, I think something like that just wouldn’t work for what Ghost Game is trying to be: a mystery/horror anime. Unlike these other anime that were action/adventure anime at their core, Ghost Game thrives on this feeling of not knowing anything, and its genre isn’t known to be the type to reveal stuff to its audience until the very last second when it can’t be avoided anymore.
    Ghost Game is intentionally keeping us in the dark because by doing so, they provoke our curious minds, and also, make us even more anxious and scared about the future. They want us to solve the mystery with these characters, because, as I’ve observed, we’re almost just as clueless as the main protagonists are over what is actually happening that’s causing all of these crazy things to occur, and like our protagonists, it makes us want answers, but also makes us feel like our lives are threatened with every episode.
    I think Ghost Game has done slow pacing really well by making it a way to enhance the horror and mystery of everything. This kind of pacing wouldn’t work for an action/adventure anime, but for a mystery/horror series, it works _terrifyingly_ well.

  • @forzacmo9069
    @forzacmo9069 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Also I'd like to applaud the makers of Ghost Game for investing so much effort in the main characters and for letting us watch their personal lives, their interests and their social circle like Ruli's friends Aoi and Mika and Hiro's friend in the dorm Kutaro, which has helped us to connect to the characters and feel for them when they face life threatening situations.

    Ghost Game is a different animal. It’s making everything that happens impact so much harder. In the other seasons we didn’t even blink when digimon died, I would argue to their detriment. In episode 13 of Ghost Game the deaths were such a whiplash in tone that each death was absolutely shocking, Bokomon’s most of all.

    The "issue" is more or less hindsight. With these kind of discussion. When watching the original you didn't really get a taste of where the story was going the conflicts just had finality.
    I would imagine that by the conclusion these first 21 would feel like setup to a few things. Digimon are also in a weird spot because they have autonomy.
    The progress in the first 3 season always had the digimon represent the kids anxiety, anger or fear. But Digimon in Ghost Game also have an arc.
    So while we focus on the tamer's and hope they can't just always talk away the problem a question might be "What Do The Digimon Think
    And that's a first in the franchise. We call them monster of the week but maybe were to focused on what we think is the big picture.
    Maybe we shouldn't be expecting some big bad guy to thrust the kids towards and more what the relationship between Digimon and Humans will become because right now anyone can become a Tamer

Did you forget we had the first onscreen human death despite two Digimon trying to save him and getting blamed for it by the distraught family, Darklizamon and Saberbirdamon attacking asking where Blacktailmon was to Hiro, Gammamon being proactive that it triggers his ability to switch, and choose Digivoultions at will, Blacktailmon opens a new gate for them with Darklizamon apologizing for their actions, and how this experience made Hiro realize how Professor Botamon words about them being the bridge between humans and Digimon holds more weight. All in episode 20.
    Not to mention in the pixuemon (episode 19) reveals how Gammamon might have been a terrifying figure in the past and in the future becomes so great that it changes Pixiemon's motives. The Petermon, (Episode 18), and Monmon (Episode 14), episodes reveal that other humans have partner Digimon. Some of which evolved in different forms than usual. All without Digivices by the way. I think that you both have a point: on one side, it is true that we got the traumatising episodes, with the humans, bokomon, piximon, etc.
      On the other hand, in comparison to the digimon “norm”, we haven’t got any 3rd stages, we don’t really know any specific plot details or background information and we haven’t even properly stepped into the digital world yet.
      So yes, many things have happened, but at the same time, those things are not the kind of milestone that we are used to with a digimon show. But like I read and heard mentioned a few times since the show came out, this is a mystery-horror show, not a action-adventure one, like the rest of the entries in the saga, so we can not really compare how much or even what happened in them, as those milestones are gonna be different.
      Again, I don’t come here to set things in stone, I just thought that you both have very valid points and wanted to agree with both 😊

    I don't keep up with the trends but it is interesting to me how these newer seasons of Digimon are running into seasons of 60+ episodes when most of the older shows capped around 50-52. That may not sound like that much more at first but to me it seems like a pretty big increase. Coming up with content to effectively fill all that time must be challenging. Since Digimon has such a large catalogue of monsters to fill the weekly time they probably can drip-feed us the overall plot at a slower pace. I'm not bored yet per se because our core group of characters is very charming and some single episodes can be really engaging and punchy, especially lately where it's become clear human lives are always on the table now. But since we're about of a third of the way through the show I am itching for some sort of revelation that really brings to light exactly what is going on here. So much of it seems centered on Gulusgammamon as his most recent appearance gives me the impression that he's anticipating something coming down the line, even if his rookie form is completely unawares.

    Alot happened in Adventure, which is probably why it’s a favorite of mine. Personally, I think it makes sense as Digimon have to introduce many of its basic rules for the first time ever. I definitely agree that Ghost Game definitely feels the least complex when it comes to the overarching plot but personally, I think its made up by the atmosphere, specifically the horror aesthetic, which is the reason I was able to tune in since we haven’t gotten a Digimon season where theme is surrounding the Digimon rather than the Digimon itself. Of course, time will tell how well this hold up but overall, I haven’t seen anything that I strongly dislike in the season. The closest I can think of is people who prefer more plot driven shows might not care for this but I’ve liked episode shows in the past so, I can dig it. It’s really the quality that’s the judge for me. Anyway, thanks for an interesting comparison, Digiknow!

I agree they've been slow about meaningful plot advancement but Ghost Game still hasnt lost me despite this and Im longing for more. In 2020 where pretty much every week there was some kind of plot advancement it got dull because it was always the same thing, beat tge bad guys and/or get a new evolution. It will be interesting to see the next third, because most of the series hit the breaks in the second third, and then pick up again in the final third. My biggest problem with Ghost Game is how much it likes to tease its main plot, but without actually giving us any solid information. Will be interesting on a re-watch once the series has completely though. I think Tamers is the only one of four where pacing was pretty consistent across the board, though that could just be chalked up to who was behind the Tamers story as well.

    Overarching plot is definitely something slower in Ghost Game compared to previous series, but perhaps something else worth considering for direct comparison, though as a video idea this may be a bit more challenging, is discussing the characterization of the human casts and their (intentionally possessive because that's how it usually feels, as opposed to a partnership between 2 individuals) Digimon. Between the tighter cast and more time with the characters, I think this is where Ghost Game shines in comparison, and I think it'd be worth putting a spotlight on that as well. I'm sure there are lots of other things worth comparing as well if you want to go down that rabbit hole, like quality of fights, quality of plots and their resolutions, etc.

    Personally, I don't see Ghost Game as moving slowly, because I'm interpreting it as having a different focus compared to all other digimon seasons. In all the other seasons, there was some bigger, overarching story about something or someone that threatened the world, and I don't think that attitude is the one to have for Ghost Game. To me, Ghost Game is the story of Gammamon. As in, this is literally Gammamon's story. He starts out fresh, knowing nothing and having very little personality, to getting more and more complex as the series goes on.
    I do have a few predictions on how the future of the evolutions will go. Since we know that digimon can partner swap, maybe we will see digimon digivolving from someone else's connection to them other than their main partner. For example, we might see Ruli be able to digivolve Jellymon just like Kiyo. However, what do you think might happen if both Kiyo and Ruli evolved Jellymon at the same time? I think that's going to be the pathway towards reaching the ultimate level.
    I also predict that Phelesmon will make his return some time in the future, and this situation will be the one that causes Hiro to try to digivolve Gammamon into Gulusgammamon on purpose, and truly commit to the kill for the first time.

    It's a little funny ghost game gets called slow and now we literally are on an unplanned hiatus. 😂 I fear a little for when we come back and then the plot continues to be slow...
    This was a fun look though! I'm really just looking forward to us getting actual episodes again. I never minded the pace and I've just enjoyed the GulusGammamon teasing, sparse as it is.

    Okay but can we appreciate how Ghost Game human cast has actual clothes??? Like I get the charm of having a signature outfit but GG is showing me how much I love the smaller things. For example: Hiro has his signature red hoodie, but the animators give him different pants and jackets throughout episodes. Same with Kiyoshiro, he gets different sweaters, or even the stupid slippers he and Hiro wear at their dorm. They could have easily just give them the same shoes and call it a day, maybe just socks and done. But they give them small details in each outfit that are different between each other, but still similar enough that it's the same vibe and style. Don't get me started on Ruli and her friends. Those girls are clearly background characters, but they look nice and you can see the individual style in each one of the girls while at the same time being similar to each other, clearly indicating that those girls are trendy (which is always a big plus for the worldbuilding from me). I may be a sentimental fool, but when I look back at early '00s&'10s anime, where everyone had only one signature look in the entire show - I can't help but gush over how far we've come with the details. Don't get me wrong, Taichi's googles and blue shirt were amd still are iconic, but there is something really amazing in seeing Gammamon switching his blue bandana for a scarf in episodes when the weather is colder 🙏

    Given that Ghost game has a bit of a different overall tone perhaps showing its hand so quickly may not be a good idea to them. I mean, most of the focus so far are Digimon's interactions with the human world, which can be fairly varied, and kinda sticking to an arc at this point probably would have undercut the buildup. Perhaps GG, at least up to this point, is more about mundanity and breaking it rather than immediately thrusting kids in a situation where they have to save the world.
    That said, I do suspect Hiro to get angry enough to command GulusGammamon (or perhaps a 4th human). There's already been multiple occurrences of Hiro's hesitancy to go all out, which means it's a slow build up to it breaking, eventually. Maybe.

    I really do like Ghost Game to me the best we have had in the series since Tamers or Savers/Data Squad I also have a foresight that Ghost Game will bring us many Creepypasta Memes for yrs to come it does very well for where we are at now it might be a pretty long running series perhaps longer than the Digimon Series of the past with the exception of Adventure 2020 I can safely say Hiro and Gammamon are my favorite Protagonist partners since Davis and Veemon which speaks volume with how high regard I hold Adventure 02 and we haven’t had a series this good for over a decade from how disappointing Adventure Tri was, to LEK being mediocre, and Fusion/Xros Wars wasn’t for me same goes for Frontier and so Ghost Game is leagues beyond these shows and only 21 Eps in, as for Adventure 2020 reboot I saw it nothing more than an unnecessary reboot there were moments I enjoyed and the new Digivolutions are great it was certainly a lot better than the aforementioned but it was really dragged on I didn’t like how they handled Devimon and his Evolutions and Millenniummon terrible show ins for these characters, also too rushed when most the Digidestines get their Digivolutions the pay off isn’t as powerful as they were in Adventure 01 they really just need to quit attempting to recapturing the Magic and Nostalgia of Adventure 01 especially after failing at it for the 3rd time. For me Adventure 01 and 02 are my absolute favorites S Tiers essentially to me they are what DBZ is to Dragonball series as a whole or Stardust Crusaders Part 3 is to JJBA so the best entries in the series and potentially Ghost Game might have a chance to be as top tier as those and even if it doesn’t I will like it as much as I like Tamers and Savers that are the next contenders behind Adventure 01 and 02, what makes Ghost Game better than most of all the current state of Digimon series is that is a nice and new fresh take on the Series that I think Digimon needs and has needed for a while it isn’t another Nostalgia bait rehashed dragged out no direction that Adventure 2020 was, or the retcon mess and another Nostalgia bait in Adventure Tri is, or the terrible concept of what Frontier was like they were trying to make Digimon into Power Rangers, or whatever the hell Fusion was suppose to be. I know I maybe ripping on Adventure 2020 but I do like it pretty decent 7/10 but I didn’t ask for Adventure 01 to be rebooted they made 67 Eps which is longer than anything before it and instead of making a reboot most people myself included didn’t ask for we could’ve got a fresh new OG story that recaptures what Digimon is and we are going to get that with Ghost Game imo.

    More importantly I feel like Digimon GG is the most enjoyable to watch, whereas OG Adventure and 02 weren't always as entertaining, mainly because the OG cast is kind of annoying in the beginning and 02, while it remedies that, visually it looks probably the worse of any season. Adventure 2020 had the strength of individual episodes, but most of them being fights without proper balance really destroys half of that show, GG I feel like finally gets the middle ground of all, having good individual episode stories, good fights and the best animation and visuals of the series.
    And what really shows how good GG is, it's how even with just the minimum storyline, it still manages to intrigue and keeps us hooked with any development it has, and how even when the show spent like, 5 episodes without anything major happening, I never felt any less compelled to watch, which is a sentiment I saw a lot of people having.

    Comparisons and Contrast for Digimon series only work for me when they actually complete; once Ghost Game is actually done will I be able to decide if it surpassed or fell behind another series. As the video showed, each digimon series has its own pace where things pick up at some point but then they drop off later (depending on which series you look at). In case of Ghost Game against everyone else, I think it's plot is showing bits and parts as each episode goes on; the biggest concepts being the dark digimon, how humans could perceive digimon, Black Tailmon, and (maybe) potential human children and partner digimon. I think there is direction but I can admit it could be faster; had the Toei hack not happened maybe the next episode we were suppose to see was going to do something with thatl.

    I am happy with how Ghost game is going because what story information we do get as well as the action that follows never failed to disappoint. I would say it will start to become a concern of the pacing however if the next few episodes roll around and nothing happens. Being drip fed information since it is a mystery series after all is fine but it boils down to how much the show is filling to stick around or willing to tell as the 20s-30s roll around as I'm afraid the show will start to get boring for many otherwise.

    With the smaller cast, it'd be nice if it follow the Tamers example, Hiro and Gammamon really had a sort of Takato/Guilmon relationship in the first several episodes, but they don't get time to breath with all the pop up villains.

The episodic aspect is a double edged sword, because it benefits children who just watch it and won't bother if they won't be bothered if they missed few episodes, on the other hand episodic shows can be annoying for other people. The characters have nice dynamics, they quirky and are fun and the show basically takes best aspects of applimon and applies to Digimon formula which is an absolute win.

    Thank you, my sentiments exactly!
    I like the more Anime, less Pokémon/cartoonish that is Ghost Game but they really need to stop with the overt childish episodes while promoting a more adult horror theme. I mean they ARE KILLING PEOPLE after all. And as far as i know, none of the other series has a body count which alone sets this apart from the rest.
    Also they can spend much better time on character development especially Hiro (whome I find pretty one note)
    My biggest issue is that there is in these first 21 episodes only a small handful of episodes that are interesting (only 4 or 5 to me worth rewatching) outside of those there isnt much to there keep fans vested in the series and I'll be honest, had it not been for episode 13 I wouldn't give the series a second glance.
