I wouldn't say it gets more interesting. While you do get more combos, you often dont get enough combo points to use them before a fight is over by spamming the same few abilities you have anyway. Most of the time you'll see those at bosses. And personally? I only ever had to use the healing one. There are other good ones but you do good damage with just your fireball and that moonerang or what ever it's called with the woman.

@@smidlee7747yeah, you do need to collect all 80 conches, as well as catching all the fish and doing all the sidequests. The game does make it easy to go back, and gives you a relic to locate anything you missed. But it’s still stupid, especially since the normal ending is really unsatisfying.
Damnit Mort! I didn’t need another great game recommendation right now! Will add it to the pile. You’re killing it man! Try to get some rest when you can!
Its an absolutely fantastic game. People shouldn't think of it just as a love letter to old games. Its totally stands on its own. Its approach to achievements is great. The relics allow you to choose if you don't want a particular mechanic, or want it harder (i did use the signal that allows you to know you have timed hits or blocks). Theres no random battles either which is great. Apart from that it just looks and plays great. Its probably the most fun ive had with a game this year and i play a lot.
I've enjoyed a few retro RPGs/JRPGs lately. Ara Fell, Trails in the Sky, Tangledeep (more of a roguelite), Cosmic Star Heroine... They're fun, don't tend to require Wikis*, and nostalgic for me...As my first video game RPG experiences were on the NES, Genesis, and SNES. *not that bigger CRPGs require wikis, exactly, but they tend to be more complex and use rulesets you might want to look up, like D&D and Pathfinder.
I was one of the kickstarter backers for the game, so I'm probably biased. That said, it's a decent enough nod to Chrono Trigger, at least as far as the combat is concerned. Even though it's somewhat retro, it's a good looking game. It shows that a game doesn't have to by hyper-realistic to look good. For better & worse, it's not a grind-heavy RPG either. If I have a slight beef so far, it's that you can only create X amount of food, I wish I could upgrade that. Maybe there's a relic that increases that, but I've not found it yet. I do like the leveling up system though, right now I'm tailoring Garl as my tank, Zale as my "everyman", Valare as my magic focused attacker, & the ninja as my striker.

I beat the game this morning (twice hehe) and I absolutely loved it! The combat never got stale because the game's random lock system keeps things fresh and prevents you from falling into a pattern of using a single strategy to win battles.
Not really true though. I went through the game no problem mostly just using the fireball and the equivilent ability for the other character. Sure sometimes you gotta do a normal attack or you use the sweep with the woman, but that's about it. Usually Fireball and her moonerang is enough for most fights.

I just 100%'d this (minus that 10 boss/relic achievement), and it took me about 35-36 hours. It's very inspired by Chrono Trigger, and the story is pretty good. The ending(s), however, are... not too great. The only reasoning I have is they fully intend to make a sequel. This game absolutely gets better the further you go (post-Wraith Island in particular). More party members, mana, more combos, ultimates, some turn manipulation, tactically utilizing the lock system. The story gets better, though there's some overwhelmingly convenient points in writing, and some things get too... *meta* for some reason. At the same time, there's some pretty funny moments, and this game also goes to some pretty dark places. Pretty interesting choice to go with TWO protagonists that are critical to the game in a lot of gameplay. I definitely felt this game was boring early on, but glad it does pick up later to a large degree. The soundtrack is a weak point to me, personally. It gets progressively better, but some tracks are somewhat boring, and the "acolyte jingle" (as I call it) is utter torture to have to listen to. One overall complaint from me is that the game is too easy. I played with 0 of the relics to modify combat to be easier, and the hardest part in the game was a story point where I only had 2 characters and was fighting 4 enemies in most of the battles for that segment. It was one of the very few times I resorted to *ever* using items. Most bosses never gave me any trouble, and I even beat one boss without giving them a single turn. It seemed weird to me given how much the relics can nerf the game's overall difficulty.
i used to like playing jrpg...but i mainly play western rpg because i prefer play my own character...as appose to jrpg where must play a predetermined character
Sea of Stars is easily in my top 3 jrpgs of all time, right behind Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The combat feels great even in late game, with encounters feeling like puzzles to solve with the sheer amount of locks you see, the exploration is fun, chests are always worth getting (even the conch shells, trust me), and the party members all feel so unique. I love the animations a lot, and the story made me cry at times, something that a game hasnt done to me in almost a decade. Its worth playing to the end, and even completing, you wont be disappointed.
I’m about 17hrs in and loving it. Chained Echoes was also fantastic but this one has managed to grab me even more. It may be as simple as the slightly more vibrant color scheme for me though.
this is the spiritual successor of Chrono Trigger, which was a really incredible game in my high school days. I played it with a snes emulator on my pc, using an english-spanish dictionary because my english skills were awful. Anyways, i'm sure i'm going to enjoy this game just because of that. Thanks for the review!
Really loved this one. I played with the visual cue, experience and fishing rod relics. Few enemies and high exp requirements for leveling was way too slow for me
Don’t expect the review any time soon? In terms of the speed Mort gets thru games he’ll probably have that 100% review out before the end of next week while still knocking out a bunch of other videos.
I've very much been enjoying Sea of Stars so far (going by Conch Shell collection, I'm about 2/3 through). It's charming and fun and the Relic system adds a very customiseable level of difficulty and convenience.
Mario rpg with a touch of breath of fire IMO, it's enjoyable but the slugs that continue to spawn more slugs left a bad taste in my mouth so im taking a break for a while to enjoy Starfield.😂
Do we really need EVERY single game to have deep mechanics? Sometimes when im done from work I just want to chill with a game that I dont need to learn so many systems that Ive spent my whole play time just reading and learning menus.
Such a good game. I didn't feel any boredom. Garl is a great character. Fighting is fine. Ost is great. Zale and Valere are bland but Sarai and Garl make it up I loved the story and the plot twist. Some boss were challenging
I have the game, but haven't gotten around to it yet for the same reason: ACVI, BG3 and Starfield, but I'm very much looking forward to playing it. Similarly with Chained Echoes, visually it's goddamn gorgeous.
I didn't find the relatively limited variety in combat to be a huge issue since combat in general just isn't super common in the game. I think the final dungeon has less than 15, maybe even 10, encounters total, including bosses, and most of them don't even respawn. Once you have more than 3 characters, you can switch them out freely as well, even for combo attacks. And enemies can have up to 8 locks later on. I never found myself truly bored by it.
I one and done'd this one. Didn't even bother all the extra stuff. The damn battle system pushed me off. I didn't click with it at all. I don't like how every battle is this stupid puzzle I don't feel like engaging with. It came on a little strong.
I just can’t get past these pixel graphics . I’m sure it’s an amazing game. I feel gamers who grew up in this pixel time period are a lot more receptive forwards these games. Or, younger kids who play Nintendo switch or their parents introduced them to pixel graphics.
I've been hesitant to play this game because of the number of complaints I've seen from people that competed the story I hope you still enjoy it by the end!
Gameplay Spoiler alert: The combat system is a complete joke Even after over 10 hours i still have only 2 spells for each character like wtf lol You do the same moves over and over. It gets completely boring because nothing new happens I really cant get my head around that people are so hyped only because it looks good. But the gameplay is simply not fun at all.
I was so hyped about this game but besides the art, the game is really average. The timing to block attacks feels awkward, the story is average at best, the characters are generic and the combat in general feels forced. I put 15 hours in and I am glad I didn't buy it. It also says a lot about SNES games when 30 years later, devs are still trying to copy them.

"Fleeshmancer, a little on the nose"
Really loved this one. I played with the visual cue, experience and fishing rod relics. Few enemies and high exp requirements for leveling was way too slow for me
Don’t expect the review any time soon? In terms of the speed Mort gets thru games he’ll probably have that 100% review out before the end of next week while still knocking out a bunch of other videos.
I've very much been enjoying Sea of Stars so far (going by Conch Shell collection, I'm about 2/3 through). It's charming and fun and the Relic system adds a very customiseable level of difficulty and convenience.
Im only a few hours in and i like it a lot, the dialogue and visuals just make it fun to play
The combat and leveling looks a bit like the Mario & Luigi games
Commenting for the algorithm
Mario rpg with a touch of breath of fire IMO, it's enjoyable but the slugs that continue to spawn more slugs left a bad taste in my mouth so im taking a break for a while to enjoy Starfield.😂
Do we really need EVERY single game to have deep mechanics? Sometimes when im done from work I just want to chill with a game that I dont need to learn so many systems that Ive spent my whole play time just reading and learning menus.
Gronk!
Good game pass title
sea of free comments.
IMO Pokemon should have evolved this direction. There just isn't the power in the switch to do proper 3d justice
great game
Such a good game. I didn't feel any boredom.
Garl is a great character.
Fighting is fine. Ost is great.
Zale and Valere are bland but Sarai and Garl make it up
I loved the story and the plot twist.
I never found myself truly bored by it.
trying to juggle this and baldurs gate so i can start starfield lol
GOTY
I one and done'd this one. Didn't even bother all the extra stuff. The damn battle system pushed me off. I didn't click with it at all. I don't like how every battle is this stupid puzzle I don't feel like engaging with. It came on a little strong.
While the basic combat mechanics doesn't really change much, enemy mechanics ramp later and makes the game a lot more engaging
I just can’t get past these pixel graphics . I’m sure it’s an amazing game. I feel gamers who grew up in this pixel time period are a lot more receptive forwards these games. Or, younger kids who play Nintendo switch or their parents introduced them to pixel graphics.
Chained Echoes but this game is 🔥 too
Chained Echoes is BETTER*
I've been hesitant to play this game because of the number of complaints I've seen from people that competed the story
I hope you still enjoy it by the end!
The lack of any way to speed up battles killed any interest I had in this game.
Gameplay Spoiler alert: The combat system is a complete joke
Even after over 10 hours i still have only 2 spells for each character like wtf lol
You do the same moves over and over.
It gets completely boring because nothing new happens
I really cant get my head around that people are so hyped only because it looks good.
But the gameplay is simply not fun at all.
Same here. I am sure the story is great but the combat system is not fun. Stopped playing after about 3 hours.
Played several hours
Why are the personalities of the two MCs cardboard? Great exploration and combat but... really generic protagonists.
