WOW! Thank you so much for posting this! I grew up in the 60's and 70's literally in a little country church that had a steeple, bell, and stained glass. I hated this music and wondered why we couldn't be singing songs like 'Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man...' lol. Now I've gone full circle and LOVE these old hymns. I remember I'd get bored during the sermons and read they hymn books (the days where parents didn't allow their children to take books or toys). I'd say to myself, "How can these writers think of so many rhyming words with cadence that makes so much sense?" Truly people of a different intellectual caliber
I remember singing this long ago, on church parade, when the world felt a cleaner place. I remember we always ended with Onward, Christian Soldiers. It felt great!

I LOVE this!! I miss traditional hymns so much!! What do you do when you love your pastor, but hate your church's musical choices??
#Janet Flier. I definitely understand and can appreciate your dilemma. I truly love traditional hymns and I do believe that no worship service should begin without a traditional hymn or anthem. We have gotten so contemporary that we have forgotten the songs that brought the church....prayer and hymns. Some silly Christians will tell you, "Nobody wants to hear them dead, dry songs." They are dead and dry because they have not been properly taught how to sing hymns.
let the pastor/deacons know! I am worship leader wanting to know what style most of of congregation sings, and that input comes from the congregation telling pastor :)
But as always, we come to church not for ourselves, our pastor, or the music. We come to worship God as a group of believers and to fellowship with one another!

Great music, singing and organ but where's the joy on the choir's faces. Only saw one lovely red-headed lady engaged. If you're happy and you know it, let your face show it.
These lyrics are very militaristic compared to the version we sang this morning. Sounds a little crusade-y. It’s a great tune but these lyrics are a lot more violent than I’m used to.

Luke Hauser the bible said we fight a spiritual battle not the physical battle of guns,sword and killing but against principalities and powers of darkness . Christianity once again isn't a religion
James 1:12, Rev. 21:6-6, and Eph.6:11-17. Verse 12 in Eph. 6 says our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against world forces of darkness and spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. That's where the rulers are. Go out sharing Christ crucified and God the Father raising Him from the dead (Rom. 10:6-13), then you'll get firsthand experience of it. This hymn is backed by scripture well. 2nd Cor. 5 even says we are ambassadors for Christ, as tho God were making an appeal thru us.
