Remember the first I learnt the song was In 2001 as young man and inspired during the missionary trips we had then. And as a song leader then whenever that was sang the congregation would raise in courage as a war cry would
Greetings from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Thank you so much for this ministry. I always look forward to 'story behind the hymn' and have actually incorporated it into the bible study, that I lead in a retirement home. Blessings across the ocean!
I have sweet memories of this hymn being sung by homeschool children in a co-op music class led by a dear women who taught many hymns of faith. May God richly bless her. Thank you Luke.
That wonderful hymn brought back memories of myself growing up at Northfield and going on many guild camps and singing this hymn with great gusto. Thank you Luke for bringing back so many memories
We still sing this song. I am thankful for our family being able to still sing the old hymns. What a gift! Spiritual warfare is very real and hymns as this encourages us to march on for Jesus. Thank you for sharing this video.
We sang this as a kind of "favorite " or theme of our Presbyterian Church choir in the USA. It has inspired me for years. Thank you for sharing it's history and meaning. God bless!
I have known this song forever . Yet now knowing the history it gets such more precious to me. This is an amazing program to follow. Blessings to you LUKE.
I've found that to be true for many of these songs Luke has gone over. They're all so precious to me, and are made even more so by the stories behind me.
I am now 76 years of age, and well remember this beautiful song from my childhood....! In those days school assembly started with Bible reading and hymn singing....! How glorious....! I so enjoyed you giving a history of the roots of this well loved hymn, and I too see it in the Spiritual sense......!! Blessings from South Africa...!!
Has anyone else noticed that the tune has a sort of Latin or Spanish rhythm (as in The Rain in Spain from My Fair Lady)? It makes it quite fun to play and rather unusual for a hymn.
I think I bcame accustomed to this hymn in the 1950's when I was in junior school. We also sang this in Sunday school.I haven't heard it for quite a while until now and it's only now after your explaination that I understand what it really means!!
Your song is always a perpetual source of inspiration to all of us.Thnks. We have to rise from the abyss. of pride and complacency to new life in JESUS.
I grew up as a child singing this song in Church but then I am in my mid 70s so I was a child of the fifties in Australia. It is a good rousing song which I still enjoy singing. Though we sang the verses slightly different being Churches of Christ & not Presbyterians. Which often happens in our country.
We sang this in my Christian school and Sunday school growing up. Today I look for a video of it after learning that my 7 year old grandson was talking about Jesus with his classmate when the teacher told them that Jesus doesn’t exist and there are many gods. She then told them to stop talking about Jesus in school. His response was that his teacher is confused and doesn’t have Jesus in her heart so she doesn’t know better. I’m so proud of my grandson and his friend for shining brightly for Jesus at school! I then began singing and want to sing this at church to inspire all of our children at church, “Stand up, Stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross!” Thank you for the history
Thank you, Brother, for this another timeless hymn! The Lord has definitely blessed you with a great gift for His Kingdom! I really enjoy your brief sermonettes,- brief and powerful! Didn’t Shakespear say that “brevity is a soul of wisdom “? May The Lord continue to bless your ministry for as long as you live in the service for Him! You have blessed my soul again and again, - every one of your presentations is a masterpiece!
I cannot hear or sing this song without recalling the powerful appeals to come to the Lord for salvation given by the late God-blessed worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Evangelist Elder E.E.Cleveland. He obviously thought the theology to be perfect. Very many hurried to the altar as the congregation sang this song with reverent fervor and he spoke the words of the chorus as if singing them. I think it's a Holy Spirit inspired song, a mini message on its own. If the people who criticize it instead take heed to this greatest of life's invitations, they would truly be blessed above their espectations in this world and in the next if they are faithful. The impact of this hymn is ETERNAL.Thank you for sharing it!
I came across this message tonight. I am so touched by your beautiful peaceful nature, I can see the love of God shining in your face. The songs are so powerful. I used to hate old hymns thinking they were not cool. I have totally changed my mind now that I am older. The words are so based on scripture and God’s truth. I’m sure your messages are having a wonderful effect on people. God bless you, Pauline living in Nottingham England.
Beautifully explained Luke. Yes, let us all stand up for Jesus, for Jesus stood up for us ...bleeding on the cross so we be free of sin n strife n evil.....Thank you Jesus. Thank you Luke
If you are a Christian, you must stand up for Jesus. I will stand up for Jesus for the rest of my life. Praises and thanks be to the Lord my God and Savior Jesus Christ.
Well Played!! Always been a favorite of mine this Hymn. Reminds me of 1 John 5 vs 5 - who is he that gets victory over the world but he that believes that Jesus is the son of God. ❤
This has always been one of my favourite hymns. We used to sing this in church when it was Uniform Sabbath (Church Scouts) as we marched into church. Thanks for sharing the backstory on it. It was really interesting to learn about the backstory and the deeper meaning in the verses. I didn't know about the 2 extra verses.
I found your channel through my homeschool group on Facebook. We study hymns as part of education and your channel was shared so we could use it for our children.😊Thank you Bruce for encouraging Friday Classic hymns and thanks to you for your channel!
Yes, it is my youth. We sang it in choir. We sang quite of life. Whitney Houston went to same Bible singing. Like Jésus loves me this I know since the Bible tells me so.
Thank you Luke for your ministry . We love your Friday Classics . I am a South African living in frSouth Carolina . I chanced upon you singing “ Turn your eyes upon Jesus “ and then found “ Crown Him with many Crowns “ (two of my many favourites old hymns ) and before you had uttered two words I knew you were South African 😂…. I think the younger generation are the poorer for not knowing the old hymns that are so rich in theology, imagery and beautiful poetry. I’ve shared this with all my SA friends who live here
I knew this hymn from school assembly long before I became a Christian (our family didn't do church). It's not in our modern hymnbooks, but I like it anyway. The whole point is this world is a spiritual battleground, if you're a Christian the attacks will come fast and often. They're usually worldly temptations, sometimes the bad behaviour and cruelty of other people, but the real enemy is the one whispering sweet nothings into your ear, the temptation to get your own revenge etc. If you think it's a playground or you're not being attacked, then chances are you're doing it wrong.
My memory goes back to Church in Jamaica 🇯🇲. I remember thinking of my sins; NEVER deny HIM. My great grandmother would sit on the back door steps of her bedroom and my sister and I would join in.
This is my song, the theme of my life. Am 37 this year 2024, i fell in love with the song in the early 1990’s when my mother used to take me with her to an Anglican Church and allow me to sit with her in the adult church instead of sunday school. I just loved the adult church bse of hymns and stand up stand up for Jesus was my very favourite. Almost 30 years later, it still is and i plan to walk down the isle with this hymn. I have alot of stories with this very hymn but already this comment is too long. Thank you for this segment, its blessed me immensely.
I went to emission boarding school in zambia and this is where we sang this him every Sunday. It was a rallying call to fight for our Christian belief. It never alluded to physical fighting, but spiritual battles that we would have each day. I still listen to it, more than 30 years after I went to school because when I am feeling discouraged or feeling downtrodden, it helps me spiritually to lift up my spirit. We are involved in a battle against evil, every single day and against all forms of human depravity. This song allows Christians to find O’Reilly in call to spirituality each day at least
Thankyou for the story behind this very old hymn. It was only in the last week when I was listening to a podcast of my pastor on the Trinity that the first line of the hymn came back to me. I do recall the tune being a bit of a dirge. I googled for the rest of the lyrics. What a very beautiful poem/hymn. Your singing of the hymn was uplifting and worshipful. (😂not at all “dirgy” ) Your singing is gifted. I look forward to hearing more.
GREAT MEANINGFUL WORDS!!! I WILL ALWAYS CHOOSE JESUS OVER EVIL. THANK YOU KINDLY FOR ALL YOU'RE DOING. BE THOW FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH, AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE A CROWN 👑 OF LIFE. TEV 3:10
Love this old hymn...from going to church every week with my grandparents.....and also when I gave my life to Jesus at 16.....( Can I share this video on my TH-cam channel for others to hear at this time of trouble across the world....thanks for sharing!!!! ❤
Have always loved this hymn...but especially the last verse. Think we only ever sang four, but they could've only picked the four ... don't have one of our old hymnals, but do have one from about 1976....yup!--- it's a twenty-second printing done in 1975........let me look....with four verses by George Duffield, 1818-1888 and George J. Webb , 1803-1887....So , question . .which one wrote the music?????
Churches that I attended 40 to 50 years ago sang this song a lot. I always thought it was too militaristic. But now that you have explained it, I appreciate it, too. I've been in a heavy personal battle recently and it continues presently. I've actually been screaming at God some the last few weeks. Through my own insensitive, stupid error, I lost a close Christian friend, who went away in anger and I've been battling fear that I have sent her away from Christ and ruined her life. I've spent the last 2 weeks working on a musical setting of Psalm 88---that should tell you what my mood has been! (But did you know that there is hope buried in the Hebrew verb tenses in Ps. 88:13? Consider that the psalmist is in a very dark night, and is talking about a not-yet-completed prayer he is sure he will make "in the morning.") That verse of "Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus" that isn't in most hymnals had me crying: Make good the loss so heavy In those that still remain And prove to all around you That death itself is gain. Thank you!
I'm 59 going on 60 and am very familiar with this wonderful and inspiring hymn. "Onward, Christian Soldiers" is another great one. It's really sad that nowadays some people actually believe these hymns promote violence. Wow, we're living in seriously delusional times. Ever since the time of Adam & Eve, the world has been in a state of decay. But a careful observance of history will show that starting around the mid-17th Century and continuing into most of the 18th Century, the decay really accelerated. That's when liberal theology seeped into the Church and society as a whole. Notice how the following movements began during that period: Seventh Day Adventism, and its lesser known cousin, First Day Adventism (both of which had their genesis in the Millerism); the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (better known as Jehovah's Witnesses), Mormonism, Christian Science; even the Theory of Evolution!
What does the last line of the first verse mean? When “Christ is Lord indeed.” Christ is Lord now, but it sounds like he’s saying Christ is not Lord yet.
A Christian who does not "agree" with the spiritual military relevance of this song is in trouble 😵💫. 2 Cor. 10:4 "The weapons of our WARFARE are not carnal, but mighty thru God for pulling down strongholds.

Sang it at VBS I love it. It means just that . Don’t sit when you can praise Jesus
Remember singing this when I was in school at assembly. Thanks. I love hearing the older hymns. Some are wonderful classics
I love the histories of the old hymns...this one is very special, especially in today's culture. Thank you.
we need to sing this and pray for Israel🙏
Thank you!
We sang this hymn as a congregation in the 1950’s when I was a little girl.
It was also sung in Missions.
Thank you for bringing all six verses to us.
Leant this song after coming to salvation. Luv it
Sang this hymn to the point of memorizing having been born in 1941 and my daddy a pastor. Have several hymnals with my bible
That wonderful hymn brought back memories of myself growing up at Northfield and going on many guild camps and singing this hymn with great gusto. Thank you Luke for bringing back so many memories
Wow! Powerful! Love this! Thank you!
I like this hymn. I've known it since childhood. We sang it a lot especially in street processions done by the church.
We still sing this song. I am thankful for our family being able to still sing the old hymns. What a gift! Spiritual warfare is very real and hymns as this encourages us to march on for Jesus. Thank you for sharing this video.

Yes we sang every Sunday morning
This song has been my life's theme song ❤❤❤
Lovely, I enjoy all of these old hymns. Military sounding or not, they always have intricate and thought provoking lyrics.
I learned this in my church in the early 90's. I always like it.
I have sung this in the Lutheran Church my entire life. A favorite.
❤❤❤SO TIMELY!!!❤❤❤
My daughter dreamed about THE BATTLE last night. I shared this on our family chat group. THANK YOU, BROTHER!!!
The way you minister the WORD whilst covering the history is truly uplifting, good in worship and spiritualy growing in HIS FAITH
I sung this song it in the Nazarene church all my life…over 50 years.
Remember it from school assemblies, which were the morning meeting and hymns we had at the start of the school day, in England when I was young.
I came across this message tonight. I am so touched by your beautiful peaceful nature, I can see the love of God shining in your face. The songs are so powerful. Sang this Hymn as a young lad in the early 1960's. Thanks 😊 Blessings 🙌
If you are a Christian, you must stand up for Jesus. I will stand up for Jesus for the rest of my life. Praises and thanks be to the Lord my God and Savior Jesus Christ.
Oh boy! I learnt this in church at my tender age this song made me the ambassador that I am till date
Amen! I heard it growing up but don’t hear it much now. But it’s a wonderful song.
I am 78 yrs of age and reside in Pretoria. We sang this song in the fifties at the little Weslyn Methodist Church in Grahamstown.

Please you seem to know more about history of hymns. I wish to know more about Anglican Hymns.and history behind them.
Can you do “He Will Hold Me Fast”?
A no go this army thoughts ... Jesus could fight for us and for him self... but he did not for his servent... he died😩
