    In Utero Trivia: the vocals were recorded with a pair of RE-20’s panned left and right to capture the movement of Kurt’s head as he sang. It’s a subtle effect but works extremely well.

    • @untartelette7545
      @untartelette7545 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It was a RE-20 on the left and a 421 on the right, with a russian Lomo tube mic in the center. Albini sold the mics a couple years ago. There's a photo of the setup.

      @@untartelette7545 that's so cool! I have a re20 that I love on kick and I've wanted a 421 for a while to use on various things. I'll have to try a setup like that with my re20, another dynamic on the other side, and maybe my wa47 or k67x in the middle. I have a Cole's 4038 I could throw in the setup too. Sounds like a fun experiment 😊

    Conspiracy theory α: Land Devices is a side project by someone that works for JHS, and Josh is cool with it.
    Conspiracy theory Ώ: Four of the Land Devices original eight are one person, whom fluxed into four counterparts due to a temporary interdimensional rift, later to be lost to time while being chased by the United States Government outside of Area S4, and last heard on a call from a pay phone to the Coast to Coast radio show (On September 11, 1997).

    • @simon_patterson
      @simon_patterson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My understanding is that a sonic maximiser is designed to replicate the fact that the speed of sound varies slightly depending on frequency. In real life, a high frequency arrives at our ear at a slightly different time to a low frequency, when both tones are produced from the same source at the same time. So, I understand a sonic maximiser is a delay, where the delay time is varied for the various frequency ranges within a sound.

Furthermore, the chosen record for record time "In Utero" is a pretty damn clever tip, as utero means womb, and so it can be understood as "In the Womb", as if Land Devices were being gestaded within JHS. In Utero... bought it the day it was released w/ paper route money. (yes, I'm 133 years old, shut up) Kinda sad memories associated w/ a lot of this album. The press was not being kind to Kurt, and he would be dead in less than 7 months. However, these are some great tunes. And so are the B-sides from the same recording sessions!!! Seriously, if you're a casual fan, it's worth checking out some of the rarities from this era - Moist V...., I Hate Myself and I Want To Die, Marigold (Grohl on lead vocals), and Sappy (first studio-quality version of an older song that had other titles.) I don't know if it was Steve Albini coaching Dave Grohl, or just him starting to come out of his shell as a singer from touring so much, but the backing vocals and harmonies on this record are amazing! Kurt even commented shortly before his death at how impressed he was w/ Dave's backing vocals and joked that he was worried he was gonna take over his job as lead singer. I think Pennyroyal Tea is probably my personal favorite from the album. There is so much pain and passion in Kurt's voice during the chorus and Dave's backing harmonies serve the song perfectly. I'm convinced Albini and whoever mixed the album have a lot to do with that. Sorry this comment was so short.

    In utero is the album that connected with me. Pennyroyal tea jumped out as at me like a single person having a conversation with themselves, except during the response section you realize it's not a self conversation but one with many people. Plus I love Kurt's guitar sound on this one. It's almost like it's semi buried, tucked in with a blanket for the night under the stars of his voice and Dave's drums. Chris's bass just stays mellow throughout like the stuffed animal next to him, soft, simple and consistent.

    In utero it's actually, my favorite nirvana record. I think it's more powerful than nevermind, and less poppy. Nevermind it's a great record, and got a lot of hits, but in utero got the songs, and it sounds amazing.

    If you like In Utero and especially the production, check out Steve Albini's own band Shellac. Awesome, noisy, groovy, primitive (in a good way) math and noise rock. 1000 Hurts is a killer record. Also check out the dozens of underground classics he's produced: Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey, Neurosis, Pixies, Low, the list goes on.

    It says "made in USA" on some of them. They are waaaay too expensive for most people. Oh well....
    As far as the Harmonic Percolator, it was picked up by Steve Albini and allegedly some were first given to the band Pussy Galore to use.

    Ohhhh, my gosh! You guys just get better. O how I hope you all live forever. I'm gonna live forever. "He" took care of that for me. You have had a chance to see me post many times. This "Land" investigation is excellent for you. You are just as good as them, and you are awesome as they are. But here's the deal. They inspire you. I can tell. I'm old. If I were younger, I would seek you guys out and make you hire me. My current company "keeps" me on because I am their so called creative. Lol. If they only knew. You and Nick do just perfect demo jams. And! I like that they are "TITLED". Gotta get my youtube channel workin and sustainable. There is some kindredness even though I'm thirty years older than you guys, at least. You give me great joy! Awesome work guys, just awesome. I'm obviously not low key, but hey, I get it.

    Can definitely see that early Braun design influence. Dieter Rams' industrial design for Braun was unparalleled, especially in the 60's.

    Land Device is the second coolest company around. JHS remains #1 in my heart though.
    For me, 'In Utero' is my favorite Nirvana album. I fell in love with Nirvana's 'Nevermind' like most, but I was awestruck by 'In Utero' even more. When 'Heart-shaped Box' was released on MTV, they immediately became my favorite band of the 90's. Love songs like 'Serve The Servants,' 'Heart-shaped Box,' 'Rape Me,' 'Milk It,' 'All Apologies,' and 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter.'
    What are some of your favorites, Josh?

    In Utero might legit be my favorite album of all time. For a couple years, I didn't like it very much in comparison to Nevermind, because it was so harsh and jarring much of the time. But circa my freshman year of college (and a great deal of associated angst), I got it. The record just made sense, from the boredom and alienation in Serve the Servants to the wordless anguish of Milk It to the sad beauty of All Apologies. It becomes all the more haunting when listened to in light of Cobain's suicide, but even without that knowledge it's still a masterpiece of rock.
