I understand exactly what you're explaining. When the hair is all one length it looks very heavy. Almost like a blob of hair with no purpose. Layers give the hair a purpose.
I like that you use the word floating, I think it's a lovely way to paint a picture with a word. You may not be using technical terms but you're explaining in everyday words how you want the hair to look and how your cutting. The type of cutting you doing could be considered slide cutting. It's not a precision cut but more or less a blending of shorter hair to longer hair. A precision cut means each hair lines up perfectly with the last hair cut and the next hair cut. As long as the hair has continuity it doesn't matter if it's precision cut. So the way you're cutting the hair and describing it is perfect. Always remember to paint the picture with your words. Thank you for sharing your techniques with us. The camera work was excellent because I really got to see your technique up close and your description was perfect.
