  • Chaz Elliott was responsible for the look and feel of many early Citadel books and magazines, including Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader, White Dwarf, and Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd edition.
During his brief, but influential time at Games Workshop he also transitioned into miniature sculpting, creating the famous lost race of Chaos Snakemen.
Since that time he has had an enormously productive and long lasting career across the gaming industry, including leading the team responsible for Magic: The Gathering and Chainmail development at Wizards of the Coast.

So, Rick Priestley, John Blanche and other big names are the reason many of us got into the hobby. And rightly so. But if it wasn't for the graphic design work of Chaz Eliott, I never would have picked up that WFRP hardcover in 1986, or Rogue Trader in 1987, and my life would have been dull and boring.
so, Thank You Chaz Elliot for suffering the long hours of photomechanical work, line film, paste up, knives and waxers all those those years ago. as a former paste-up man myself I know what your life was like back then.

That was brilliant, just so interesting, and Chaz seemed so generous with his openness. It’s amazing how interconnected the industry is, so many companies and games I’ve played. Would love to hear more about the connects with ex-GW and Magic staff and the beginnings of Privateer Press and Warmachine.

Letraset, handlettered layouts, paste-up artists, signed-off photosetting, B/W photocopies, PMT-machines…
All are now long lost Archotech from the Dark Age of (Graphic Design) Technology - before the Digital Age of the MacBookPro, Internet, Adobe Creative Cloud InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop and A.I. generated text and images.

The artwork in that original Rogue Trader book did an fantastic job of creating that dark, grim and grtty universe. Even now I vividly recall how, before even opening the book for the first time, that cover art of the Crimson Fists making their last stand utterly captivated me. Every visual aspect of that book, and not just the pictures, had a flavour all of its own. To me, that book as a whole is a work of art.

Part of the working week at Games Workshop should be sitting down in the biggest space they have and all watching these conversations, so everyone who now works there understands where it came from
Because although they are probably creative people they are really just rehashing and repackaging the raw creativity of people like this chap

So good to hear from a graphic designer, the unsung heroes of gaming. People take good graphic design for granted, but you notice bad design, when you find a rule book hard to navigate.
