Not just some folks but Hannibal Marvin Peterson himself I guess the cameraman knew what was happening so he made the decision to show another trumpet player.... as a matter of fact Terumasa Hino is trying hard to imitate Peterson in the way he sounds and appears on stage.
@@ProducerTonyP my guess is most players don't do that with Chick...i guess Hino really wanted to hear what Chick would do , so he could get even crazier in his own solo .really amazing stuff
There is an old saying "Baseball is like church. Many attend few understand." Similarly, Many listen to jazz, but few hear" How many times have you heard a great jazz artist play an F blues? All the time. Do you want to hear the same licks and chords? It would take me a long time to transcribe all those chord substitutions especially all those harmonies Chick is using at the beginning of the tune. It's not the usual and that's the point. He stretches your ears. Some people don't like being stretched and then write harsh judgements never realizing the problem is with the music but with their ears.
the problem with the first chorus is that, regardless of the difficulty of the block chords he is playing, he is really, on a musical level, just fucking about. There is a familiar melody in there that he is blocking out. And it's really cheesy sounding on a blues. It's a very diatonic melody, and he alters the harmonies to the nth degree, also phrasing it straight, as the original quote was played, against a swinging blues. So, as usual with Chick, he is playing to amuse the band (all smiling as they recognize the quote) and himself, and sounding like a musical mud cake with cow pie frosting. He does that a lot. Ignores actual musicality, goes so against normal, average "tastes". And so it sounds actually silly to many. or ugly. Whatever. It's Chick. Your ears are developed to the point that you can appreciate the voicings while ignoring the fact that he's doing an ugly musical joke that really doesn't fit the blues. Yeah I could stretch my 1964 powder green Studebaker Lark and make it into a limo. It would be difficult and take a lot of expertise, but it wouldn't look better. I don't know the quote, but it sounds like some simple classical line or a christmas song. It don't fit, it don't work, except as a obnoxious musical pun.
Yes the Japanese Did miniaturize the tune' Straight No Chaser' into the new ' I'll drink through a straw'.And yes Chick is shown berating him for the misdeed.. Surely much rice was exchanged and a good ALL was Had by TIME>
that was really good. outside humor with lyrical displacement on a galactic order. accompanying you with was perfect backdrop of chick playing the 12 tones of violet not very blue refractions of scientologic illumination.
The japanese fellow is not soulful. But I guess if all you do is run scales up and down fast it sounds good. I like the Miles approach tasteful expression that makes sense and fits.
nah he's just practicing and getting paid, figuring out some new ways to sound outside and hipper than anybody on a "gosh a blues?... so boring....oh well ...okay.....check out these non musical don't fit nowhere and certainly not a blues dissonant noises".
@@Gmuns1 yeah, but when Monk and others played"like that", it was still not just different and "interesting" and difficult, but it was also musical. This is just taking a very diatonic quote ( he is playing some simple melody i don't recognize) and slamming it down block chord stye with as much harmonic density as possible. He's just fucking around, joking with the music and the band, literally trying to play ugly and it sounds like it.
He's interspersing cluster chording with outer modal interplay; he is ever the scientist. It's an interesting figure of study. If you've ever seen him live, this is one of his trademarks.
Lol i came across this comment 4 years later and i don't agree with my past self. I fucking love chicks playing in this vid. My ears and tastes have changed greatly since then. For the better I'll add.
During chick coreas solo the cameraman didnt know what was happening so he made the decision to show some folks fishing instead

What a awesome video !
Neat! Would love to see more of this show...
👏🏾👏🏾
It seemed like chick didn't want to take the first solo, but Hino was smiling as to say , it's all you bro!
Exactly. Chick was comping and looking at him like, play! 😀

Do you like being stretched?

I reckon he starts off quoting the Japanese national anthem then "I Mean You"

wtf chick's solo a fine moment of weirdness
日野さんはなんでも吹ける。すごいフレーズだ。「てめえら、なめてんじゃねえぞ」って感じがいいですね。
Hino conjuring up FREDDIE HUBBARD!!!
Hino is so much better than Freddie!
War bestimmt laut 😫
Trumpet player had a sick ass solo. The group was great.
Chick Corea. What a loss to jazz in its entirety what else can on say
Is it just more is chick sound angry?

This is why I dont like reading youtube comments. People have been playing like that since 1950. Time to catch up

Good cornet but off to a bad start. Nice solos.
Cornet, pas cor
ハンニバル釣りしてますね
Piano out of tune somewhere around F6
I'll just call it what it is ... BS!
Why?
Piano solo was stupid dude, what the hell was that?
+Tael Estremera You know that's Chick Corea, right?
I'm a huge Chick Corea fan and I agree with Tael hahaha... not one of Chicks most inspired moments.
