Just an update but also also a look into the future format changes for videos. Let me know what you think. My socials, including the Discord and Bluesky links: linktr.ee/alan...
I've also been contemplating putting these less edited videos (as described) on this second channel and leaving the main channel for only big AU videos. Let me know what you think!
I'm worried about retention. by mixing armchair urbanist with urbanist update vids, there could be a reduced retention, and in turn, a reduced viewership overall (and reduced spread about urbanism). perhaps making a one time video announcement about the extra channel and the urbanist update videos will be suffice? but either way, you definitely know more than me about how yt works.
That sounds like a tough choice since you're proposing something that sounds basically halfway between your main content and an "extra". I guess another option would be post them here, but rename this channel?
Please continue to keep your mass transportation politics here on TH-cam. It's important to push back over these next four years on the largest platform available. Thank you for all that you do
Bluesky is great! It's a lot more chill than twitter. (Although it's not exactly friendly to having things become "trending", who's to say that's a bad thing, really?)
i hope it all collapses like Penn Central so that government intervention and some real financial planning can take place, like what happened in the 70s i know we talk shit on Amtrak, but at least it is stable(-ish), moreso than private corporations running rail service. Brightline might be an exception but they are owned by Fortress Investment Group who develops real-estate. They are just in it for money and will drop customers at the tip of a hat.
@@GeldaStPete Brightline closed down all services during COVID for 18 month while any other actual public transit agencies continued to provide, under very problematic conditions, service to all (even if reduced, due to the circumstances). Brightline is loosing money and once they'll get everything they can out of real-estate they will shut it down.
I think you're ideas about how to move the channel forward are good, it would definitely be worth a try. Also, completely off topic, but mentioning Scott manley activated me like a sleeper agent.
Maybe consider giving a name to the talk to camera videos to further distinguish them from Armchair Urbanist videos. Talking Transit or something like that.
Please continue to voice your logical public transportation woes and what should be done. It really helps me escape the abomination of garbage public transportation here in Adelaide, given the fact that neither the ALP nor currently the Liberals care about public transport
If you ever need to talk around a subject say "The guy who sabotaged California High Speed Rail for his electric cars" in the big policies video. people would understand why transit people dont like him
Hi Alan! Great to hear that you're going to mix things up a bit on your channel. As you're into transit and city life in Philadelphia,, I thought you'd be great at hosting a public transit-based adventure hunt in Philly. Are you familiar with adventure hunts (they're sort of like scavenger hunts)? It's a event where teams are given a description of landmarks around town, they have to figure out what the landmark is, and then race to take a picture of themselves in front of the landmark. First team back to the start that got pictures of themselves with all the landmarks wins. I did something similar in Tucson and it was a lot of fun. Having a transit-based adventure hunt in Philly that's live-streamed would be a blast! It would showcase Philly and it's transit infrastructure. I'd also be super interested in a video on the Main Line, as it's such an iconic part of the area's rail history. Perhaps hop on and off the train at each stop and show some of the local attractions around each station. Thanks for all you do and best wishes for 2025!
The funds have already been laid down for Brightline West and California High-Speed Rail. They are a done deal. I am saying that because construction has already started. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Amtrak's massive plan for expansion.
Nice!! Ive been feeling the stress as well with the long scripted vids and been toying around with what an secondary format could look like for me too. Looking forward to the new videos, we need a fantano for urbanism fr😆
Would suggest the Mastodon / Fediverse instead of Bluesky because it has more cogent people and no algorithm. Not as big and flashy, but for the people who just want to find like minded others and interact without bells and whistles and ranking of posts, it is much better. But takes longer to build community.
If the "main channel" is less frequent, suggest you put your AF logo on the thsi channel as well as armchair urbanists so we can asociate both. In terms of humour, don't you think appointing RFKjr as HHS secreatry is funny? Seems like the enw admin is out to entertain us all with really funny incompetant stuff. It will be up to states and cities to find funding for major transit projects, and hopefully the building of the Hudson tunnels in NYC cannot be unfunded by Trump.
I think the topic-based quick takes would be a good addition. I enjoy listening to your longer streams, and in each one, you go through a dozen such videos worth of topics. Have you considered posting stuff from Mastodon? It's a platform that's not under the influence of one person, and you can join the small but growing community of transit riders, train enjoyers and advocates.
6:45 "Somehow we need to make them interesting". You should take a look at NotJustBikes. He manages to communicate these subjects in a really engaging way. He's up to something like 1.3 million subscribers so clearly he's doing something right. 😀
My only opinion is: Make more videos! They're usually great, but you don't post very often. I appreciate they're a lot of work, but maybe they don't all need to be super fancy. The changes you outlined sound like a good way to achieve this, so it sounds positive.
Honestly, just pull the bandage off and quit Twitter now, full stop. Any support that heads Elon's way just doesn't do any good for any of what you're representing on this channel.
I've also been contemplating putting these less edited videos (as described) on this second channel and leaving the main channel for only big AU videos. Let me know what you think!
I like that idea, I like seeing you as a person with thoughts on things that doesn't make sense for the main channel.

Definitely!
Not sure if that's a good idea for your main channel's health.

Just checked Bluesky, didn't knew it was this huge ! And it seem way more chill

Unfortunately there seems to be more bad news about the SEPTApocalypse. :(

@@GeldaStPete well, hopefully FIG takes notes from the various JR companies, and MTR in Hong Kong for how to do it right

Well, we got some good news today
SEPTA would be in violation of the law if they were to terminate the Chestnut Hill West Line.
I dunno, sitting in a chair and talking about urbanist stuff seems pretty on point for an Armchair Urbanist
I think you're ideas about how to move the channel forward are good, it would definitely be worth a try.

Just do what feels good, and see how it goes.
Hope you can have a meet-up in Chicago next year. But not until at least May. Let's do it outside.

Mate Australia is heaven compared to america.
sounds good to me.
Sounds good, but there seems to be a sync issue with the video.
TGV Synthwave 2
It's what we all want.
(Also, an extended version of the TGV JoJo edit)

We need to talk about Link21
I have that exact same Office Depot chair. Its surprisingly good for the price.
I do still hope you'll throw in a more produced video once in a while. I enjoy them.
Looking forward to sweing the new format
I guess I thought this was the main channel now. Love your videos!
sharing your concerns about Twitter and several other sites seem to be moving to bluesky. Guess I am joining the migration.

Lucid stew is doing pretty good news videos on transit
City For All as well!

Mastodon mentioned.

Can you do quick videos and still do long form videos? Michelle McDaniels makes heavily edit videos, but she also does more current videos.

Half Life 3 will be released before the Wendover video.
there's a wendover debunked video in store?
Your audio is super out of sync =(
What minority is he talking about?
I feel the minority community that I belong to was also a scapegoat for hate on twitter. So I am curious.
Rip old joe, we failed him.

We need to talk about institutional racism at Amtrak.
Leave Twitter, it's not worth it. The more people leave, the better off the community is for not swimming in that garbage.
