They're one of the humanoid races of Faerun, similar to goblins or orcs, and used to have a patron god Gorellik before the Demon Lord Yeenoghu (who is believed to be a gnoll turned demon) took over the gnoll race as their new "god". Gnolls reproduce naturally like every other humanoid race, BUT gnolls can also be created by a hyena gorging on the flesh of prey defeated by a Fang of Yeenoghu, which is the title of a high-ranking gnoll that is possessed by a lesser demonic spirit.

Gnolls, they are basically bipedal hyena monsters. In BG3/Forgotten Realms, they are born out of hyenas with demon mutations.
