One of my favorite episodes. David always seemed to have scenes where there's intense drama and he played them to perfection.

David Harper is such a good actor and this was a standout for The Waltons and David Harper.I think this episode, along with the one he finds out he had a twin brother. So emotional. This episode kind of reminds me of the coming of age movie, Summer of ‘42. Not exactly similar but the young wife of soldier away at war.

@@judynorton2598 Thanks Judy. I remember this episode in spots. John told Jim that he had to stop seeing her, since she was married; that it could only end badly. But poor Jim was pretty much smitten (or in love) and told Dad that he couldn't or wouldn't. Then the end came abruptly (though I forget how or why) and Jim told Dad that he realized now that he (Dad) had been right, because he (Jim) had lost his heart to the married lady by persisting in their acquaintance and that getting over it would now be painful. Not nearly as sad as John Boy and Jenny but still fairly sad.
I have to call him "Jim", as I really suspect that Jim-Bob Walton (if not David Harper) must have gotten very tired of the nickname. The writers should have upgraded Jim-Bob to "James Robert." That would have been so much better.

Absolutely. The majority of actors go on to other work - or supplement their acting with side jobs. Very hard to make a living as an actor - very few manage to do it over the long haul.

Any Walton guest I've seen interviewed here and elsewhere always has wonderful things to say about being on the show and spending time with the regular actors. • @wardarcade7452

How scary for Miss Rahn to have had to witness a near crash of that plane- starting literally over her head! And, yet, the camera operator just seemed to shrug it off as 'a day's work' in spite of how rough the glide-landing wound up being! Yeah, it's not just performers who have often risked it all to provide entertainment on film, etc.!
Happy to hear that she had liked the show before and that, despite that scary near-crash overhead, she had had a fulfilling time performing in that episode even though she didn't get to perform with the entire regular cast!
Thanks for hosting her and bringing us that interview!

    • @wardarcade7452
      @wardarcade7452 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I hope you don't my adding that it's a testament to the scriptwriters and Miss Rahn herself that the character of Betsy stayed sympathetic and likable throughout the entire episode- even factoring in that she was a married woman who had befriended a teen boy (and had a not-entirely dowdy wardrobe). It could have easily veered into either belittling Betsy or becoming tasteless but the class was kept throughout and even though the bond ended sadly with Betsy finding herself widowed and shattered with Jim-Bob consoling her. However, knowing that with his youth and her fresh widowhood neither were in the best frame to attempt to take it any further and they'd have to part ways before too long, it still seemed as though the bond had ultimately bettered each of them. And I credit Miss Rahm for helping make Betsy into a deeper character that the viewers could care- not every performer could have been successful at doing so even with the script! Again, thanks for this!

Thank you patsy. You did a great job of explaining the outfits which really helped me to understand why those out fits were chosen. It’s great that you reached out to Judy to do this segment with us. When I was younger we all went to the same church and my cousins mom was a deacons wife she was outside working in the garden and saw the pastor and his wife coming for a visit and because she was in shorts she ran in the house and quickly changed. By you explaining your costume I understand now why she changed and why they chose the costumes for you. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about your brief roll on the Walton’s.

Silver Wings was an awesome episode. Patsy was very beautiful in it. Also, what an amazing acting job she did. The episode aired in 1979. Being 62 now I was around Jim Bob's age at that time. Heck I was in love with Patsy (Betsy) when seeing the episode. Definitely one of my all-time favorite Walton's episodes. Kind of sad that the Betsy Character she played moved on at the end of the episode. If I had been Jim Bob, I would not have ever let her go :)

Patsy, thank you for appearing on the show. I already checked out your photography website. You really have great talent at this. I was really impressed.
I think you have the right attitude about acting. You loved it and when you got tired of it, you moved on. One thing I learned from Judy is that acting is a very fickle business and your lifespan is often short no matter how talented you are.

Thanks for this, Ms. Norton! Wonderful that you followed up with Ms. Rahn after she checked in with you. The actor from the Canadian show "Police Surgeon" that Ms. Rahn couldn't recall was likely Sam Groom, the show's lead, who was a prolific guest star on American television, mostly on one-hour dramas during the heyday of over-the-air broadcasting.

Police Surgeon was a fairly high profile show on the private national network CTV. It was syndicated in the US as Dr Simon Locke. I saw an episode not too long ago on Retro TV.

I’m so glad you talked about the wardrobe! It’s something I questioned watching this episode. I also love hearing the evolution of actors after the Walton’s…. Pasty, your life sounds so wonderful and free! Kudos to you! And thank you, Judy, for another great behind the scenes!
Side note: Will you be having Martha Nix on? I asked her about it in Lincoln IL. she mentioned you had asked her once but nothing came of it… She has such a great story!

OMG, the plane engines cutting out would be my worse nightmare. Having said that, I'm sure I read somewhere that when an old plane like that does a loop the loop, the engines are deprived of fuel when upside down hence they cut out but start up again once the fuel is fed back into the engines however, as far as I know, the engines have to regain fuel supply again within a very small and short time window/frame otherwise it could be catastrophic and they could completely stall so the pilot really needs to be at the top of his/her game and competent. Thank you Judy for a great segment and best wishes to you from your waltonian superfan in a very mild England😉

I just watched this episode today. Funny thing, when I was watching I thought something went amiss with the airplane, and I really hoped it wouldn’t crash. I didn’t think it would because I knew Jim Bob was still in the show. These interviews shed light on things we miss or things we notice, but don’t know why we notice if that makes sense. I wondered about her clothing as well. I don’t remember this episode but by 1979 I was 21 and had other things going on in my life other than TV. I’m really glad to be watching/rewatching this series. I’m getting much more out of it at 60 something rather than in my teens. Keep up the good work, Judy!

This episode hit close to home for me. Like Jim Bob I as a teen also fell in love with a slightly older married woman whose husband was over seas in the service. Like Jim Bob I also was heartbroken but let down gently. Great episode.

It's a treat and "nice to meet you " to a major character star from her very short film career?? And yes she was beautiful and almost as hot as Mary Ellen was way back in the day back then... 😀

Hope other actors that were on the show contact you for an interview so we can see what they’ve been up to and get their perspective about being on The Waltons.

I think she had other innate talents. This does not always exist with other actors. I like that she pursued her degree as well. Kami Cotler did as well and teaches.
