RANKINE CYCLE (Simple and Basic)

  • The video simply explains the Rankine Cycle in Thermodynamics. Rankine Cycle is one of the cycles in Thermodynamics that contributes a big impact on our society by providing electricity in the Industries and in our Residence.
    Rankine Cycle in Thermodynamics is also one of the major subjects in the Engineering courses or curriculum and this video teaches you the basic things about this cycle. Rankine Cycle is a fun thing to study.
    Rankine Cycle was named after a Scottish polymath and Glasgow University Professor, William John Macquorn Rankine
    It is a Vapor Power Cycle
    Power Cycle is a cycle that uses heat to generate work and since it’s a vapor cycle, it uses the vapor phase or in this case steam to rotate the blades of the turbine.
    It actually utilizes the heat energy contained in coal, oil, or natural gas and then converts it into mechanical energy and eventually electrical energy. Which of course provides electricity in our city and in our homes.
    One of the best definitions for this cycle is that it Closely describes the process of Steam Turbine Systems and is Derived from the Carnot Cycle. The most efficient thermodynamic cycle tells us that power is dependent on the temperature difference between a heat source and a cold source, which is our surroundings. The higher the difference, the more mechanical power can be efficiently extracted out of heat energy.
    So now let’s talk about the variants or the Types of Rankine Cycle.
    We have a REHEAT RANKINE CYCLE, it is a cycle which we introduced the exhausted steam back into the boiler to reheat it)
    We also have a REGENERATIVE RANKINE CYCLE, we bled a part of the steam into heat exchangers to preheat the feed water before entering the boiler)
    There is also an ORGANIC RANKINE CYCLE, which uses an organic high molecular mass fluid with a boiling point occurring at a lower temperature than the water-steam phase change.
    A SUPERCRITICAL RANKINE CYCLE is also one of the types, Water is the working fluid and it is operated at above its critical pressure.
    So those are the types of Rankine Cycle, but here in this video, we will only discuss the most basic and fundamental of this cycle, the IDEAL RANKINE CYCLE.
    We must be aware that this operates slightly different than the REAL RANKINE CYCLE
    This is a REVERSIBLE CYCLE, common sources of irreversibilities are neglected such as frictional pressure drops and undesired heat transfer with the surroundings.
    Constant pressure or isobaric process and constant entropy or isentropic process is used for the equipment involved in this cycle.
    The working fluid is WATER, it will undergo a closed-loop and will be reused constantly
    So by the way Why do we use WATER as the working fluid?
    Well, simply because it is NOT TOXIC, NOT REACTIVE, HIGHLY ABUNDANT, LOW COST, and GOOD THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES.
    To make a Rankine cycle, we need 4 processes (Process 1-2 for the Boiler, Process 2-3 for the Turbine, Process 3-4 for Condenser, and finally process 4-1 for the Pump).
    Watch the video of Rankine Cycle to learn this cycle in a simple and fun way.
    If you think we made a mistake, please let us know or write in the comment section.
    Thank you!

    I used to teach thermodynamics and it is one of the most badly explained topics in science. I think it is a legacy of the people that were pioneers in the field. They happened to be awful teachers that came up with bad explanations which have been repeated from one generation to the next. This is a shame, because thermodynamics is a wonderful subject that can be incredibly useful.

    • @EarthPen

    Could this be a perpetual motion device if the device is generating it's own energy for evaporation and condensation?

    • @pedrovisco9231
      @pedrovisco9231 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude, this kind of thing doesn't exist. The carnot efficiency (just based on the temperature difference, ignoring all the losses) never gets 100%. Beside that, there's something called "the second law of thermodynamics" that says that the entropy of a closed system ALWAYS increase through time. In other words, you cannot create a perpetual motion or infinity energy device.

      I hope I can answer it in a very simple way. But here it is, Heat Exchangers does not drop their pressure ideally since we are not compressing and expanding a fluid.

    I think the formula of the power needs the mass flow rate but not the work itself. Please correct it

    • @EarthPen
      @EarthPen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are totally correct my friend. The all of heat and work on the formula for each process should be "rate" and it seems we have not put a "dot" above it. Anyway, we are going to edit it soon. Thank you so much for correcting us.

    This appears to be a good, informative presentation but I stopped watching after a minute due to the distracting music. Imagine going to a lesson and as the lecturer is talking there is music in the background at the same volume as the speaker. There are some excellent comments here but as a mature learner it is too distracting for me. IMHO if the info is well presented, you don't need music.

    The music is hellishly distracting. Could you repost without the background noise?

    The background music is very irritating. You should upload such types of videos without music.

      Yes, because at the time of recording for this video, our audio is not good. Atleast not better than our recent videos.
