Thurmond, WV | An Abandoned Ghost Town Gone Bad

  • Thurmond, West Virginia was a built as a railroad town that is now the least populated in the state. Only 4 people still live here. Today as I filmed this, I was the only person in town, and it was amazing! The haunting and eerie feel of a ghost town, Thurmond was a successful town that eventually suffered from the decline of the industrial era and came to an end. In the 1950's this town suffered the worst as the coal industry declined, and railroads changing from steam engines to diesels, thus just about folding up this little amazing town. This is a historic area and lots to cover. Let's take a drive and check it out!

I really like your format. No ads or fill in junk, no music, no voices. Just the music of mother nature. It is a pleasure to watch your videos.

Thurmond is well known to railfans. It still sees a lot of traffic, both freight and coal. An Amtrak train even still calls here if you want to ride it. It appears as if the grade crossing signals are malfunctioning as they're flashing but no trains are around. I don't know if you could move here. I don't think any homes are for sale. There are no real estate listings for Thurmond. I assume those homes on the hill are still lived in. This is one of the one the more detailed videos I've seen of Thurmond. Interesting. Nice that so much is preserved.

I live in railroad hamlet called Cluny in Alberta, Canada. Use to be a hustle and bustle place back in the day. Now our population is around 65. I'd love to explore this place. Thanks for taking your time to provide us with such great content.

I've seen several videos and accounts of Thurmond, and I like the place. It's never seemed creepy to me even though it's almost deserted. I'm so glad they are preserving what is left, which is quite a lot considering the size of the place. Nice video. I hope you enjoyed your visit to this unique place. Thank you!

The silence is kind of creepy, in a good way. WVa sure does have some haunting places.

I've seen many videos of Thurmond - a real railfan type of town! Love it to see it again! So glad that they are still preserving it but many un-preserved abandoned and forgotten homes up on the hill/mountain though!

Love this channel. Most underrated on this platform in my opinion. One thing I don’t understand about these smaller towns in WV is that there’s so much land and homes (abandoned) yet nothing is for sale more or less. It’s like people still own those houses but have just allowed them to sit and rot. Maybe someone can fill me in on why this is?

Interesting history. Not creepy. Just a little WV mining town that has outlived her prime. The mines are gone, the 'Jumping Bridge' rerouted her highway, and her people left.

I've traveled there many many times.. it has changed over the last 50 years. My Grandmother is from there. When she was a young child , her sister, and brother and my great-grandparents rode the train from there to Mineral Ridge Ohio where they settled. All they had was their suitcases there was no work or anything..
