Without a doubt, THE most detailed and well explained Earthship build video I have ever seen.The explanations around power, water, filtration, heating, cooling, types of materials, drapes, venting etc etc etc!! My partner and I watched this over a couple days before work and simply loved every minute! Well done!

Just a ProTip for the video editor: the conversion displayed at 19:36 is wayyy off, and shows a per-KW price 220% higher than what Ron states he actually paid for the 2021 project. Plus, at 19:30, the conversion "2200* .75 = $1,650 per watt" makes no sense ($1,650/W would be 330 times higher than what he paid in 2006!); what you mean is "2,200W x $0.75 = $1,650 TOTAL", i.e. it cost $1,650 for the total 2.2KW.
At ~19:10 Ron states that he paid $5/W per solar in 2006, whereas for this project he paid approximately $0.65 - $0.75/W, and he has 2.2 KW of solar on the roof, making for a *total* cost of $1,650 for 2.2 KW. However, at 19:36 the on-screen per-KW conversion erroneously displays the _total_ 2021 KW cost, when in fact it should display the _per_ KW cost (which according to Ron's numbers would be $650-$750/KW). The correct conversion would be:
2006: $5,000/KW
2021: $750/KW

I wish I would have known about this place back then I was so close to my mother lived in Sant Fe I've even been to Taos but some how missed this or I would be living here now✌️😁

I must confess; I have loved the conceptual ideas of Earthships for years now. However, I was turned off by the esthetics of their builds. The can, bottle, adobe cob thing isn’t bad, but just not for me.
With that said this Earthship build is one I could see myself living in. At 6’5”, I even liked the elevated refrigerator on a platform. I’m in my 60’s with severe arthritis. It’s already causing me difficulties bending down to get things from the bottom shelves.
I’m saving this video as a reference. I’ve been planning a retirement home for myself and LOVE this! 🥇🏆💯

This is my wish list for home construction: short runs for hot water and drains, access panels for maintenance and repairs, plumbing not entombed in the walls, ceiling and floor, cabinets and floor water proof, kitchen ventilation capable to quickly purging a smoke filled kitchen, floor drains, crawl spaces large enough for workmen to work comfortably.

A thermostatic fan should automatically pump excess greenhouse heat into the thermal battery in winter and outside in summer. The plants will thank you later.
A screen on the vent window would keep most of the bugs out of the house.
Propane cooking? Rocket mass heaters are the way, as are composting toilets.

Is it a good idea to have rocket mass heater for cooking in there as it might overheat?

there should be stone on the area directly under/in front on the water filter cabinet in the laundry room/green house. Just a design suggestion. I people have to stand in the bed to access it it should have a step stone for them to stand on. Love the house BTW

Where the heck are you gardening around there lol? Your vids usually show up in the 1st line of vids on my Smart TV which is nice, then I get to see how you are when I get home from work. Weird, the road just ends?
I feel like the reliance on propane is compromising the objective. Aren't earthships supposed to be fully self-reliant? It would be next-level to design a septic system that creates and stores a tank of bio-gas to run the water heater and stove. Or more solar capacity to run an electric instant water heater and an electric induction stove could also eliminate the reliance on propane delivery. Bio-gas would work so nicely for your cooking fuel.
Other than that, I think this earthships are so incredible.. I love the passive cooling and heating principles the most. The water recycling systems have really come a long way as well. Great jobs guys! Never stop innovating! You inspire many people to change the way they see and interact with their homes. And challenging traditional building methods with a more self sustainable plan is another huge plus! I hope to build my "trash castle" one day in the near future 😁
I couldn’t agree more Jared. Surplus solar could be used for hot water for sure. Bio gas is a little trickier, could work for cooking fuel seasonally, but I haven’t seen a full proof year round system yet. There are septic bio digesters available but the investment is greater than conventional septic, and gas is inexpensive.
@@TheOffGridGuru Hey! Thanks for the quick response! That's good to know you have already looked into the bio-gas option! Would it require much more investment into the solar generation/storage to switch both to electric? I guess those are both things that could draw an immense amount of power when you are doing laundry, showering, and cooking in the winter months. The main investment would probably be in battery storage. What do you think?
@@MegaBlackLobster Well, as for the solar investment, its more about using your peak solar gain hours during the day to heat hot water once your batteries are topped off. So its more about the design of the system rather than the size.
@@MegaBlackLobster As for high draw items like washing machines, those can also be run during the day when the system is “floating” (the batteries are full). I know earthship residents that will prep laundry in the morning or night before and then use a home automation app on their phone to turn kn the machine from work during the “peak” solar hours of the day. Or if the weather shifts, they can skip it, protecting their system from being over drawn. Hope this has shed some light on the possibilities!

I can tell you that no earthship ever built produces enough food for one person let alone a family. Much better to have a green house.

The desk would rest on the floor when the bed is in the down position

love the walk thru is there a source for the actual build like from start to build with deciding where to build. even overseas id like to have one by retirement age so been looking at land and i think this type of home makes sense.

They talk repeatedly about the mass etc, but none have shown how they build the foundation for the ground to prevent moisture from rising up the walls and the floor, how they do this because obviously in the desert it may not be so necessary but in areas with low-level water tables and environmental humidity will cause serious problems in the short term.
All of it is possible basically in a deserts... for cold climate it won't work.
You realize Taos gets to -30? The issue could be humidity but he mentions condensation in the tubes and others mention insulation below the footers. That probably includes a moisture barrier.
It’s very cool and interesting earth ship home! I was curious if you could use a Tesla Powerwall 🔋 instead of those batteries you showed. Maybe better technology. I like the commercial stove. I think if it was me I would want a bigger refrigerator or higher end. Also I wouldn’t go with that wood choice, I would go with pine or cedar. How much will this earth ship cost once it’s a finished home and completed?. 👍🏻😊
Last I checked Tela will NOT sell a power wall for off-grid use, and we can agree that there are much better battery choices. LIPO (lithium iron phosphate) batteries can retain up to 80% for as many as 10,000 cycles, and don't cost much more than AGM (AGM is usually dead after 300 cycles).

The only thing I'd do different is have stainless steel sheets for the first 2-3 meters (or yards) as the pavement in front of the house, to get more sunlight and heat into the greenhouse by reflecting the sunlight from the stainless steel pavement into the house. Sure, that means you won't be able to use that space for other plants and storage, but it also means lower heating bills the whole year, and maybe also more solar power during the winter and when it's cloudy.
You normally put in raise planting beds, With black fabric over them in the winter an nothing on it during the summer to act as a battery both ways. The biggest reason they can use such a small solar array is bc they are in the south.
But I do agree I would have gone bigger on the solar also. If you just go all electric, The money you would say not have a plumber, inspections, Extra appliances cost's for being propane an dealing with them when they go bad last but not least knowing your always going need a propane truck x amount of months... If you go more solar and make the room across the front face of "earthship" homes the convection caused helps you heat in the winter and cool in the summer massively also..
I would go a Sol-ark 8Kw at least with power management. To let me put up 14Kw of solar an use ALL 14 as the sun shines (should look up the tech it is SUPPER cool) It lets you use more loads during the day w/o stepping up inverters. This way you can double if not triple up with hot water tanks to use as a battery. But Mostly so you do not have a bottle neck going on while charging after a cloudy time. Also with at least 20 if not up to 30Kw of EG4 batteries. Plus a 8Kw generator with two 100ga propane tanks to feed the system that you connect like a bbq, for the same price as his "Propane" package here. If not being able to step everything up a lil more if you want to bring in the tax benefits.

Unfortunately if I ever get the opportunity to do an earthship I wouldn't go tiny. The amount of effort it takes to build an earthship I might as well make it a reasonable size.

How much would a unit like this cost?
Looks like it’s around 1700sqft, it says earthships are around 250$ per sqft, but supposedly the prices have dropped, so a home like this would cost probably 400k
If I had the $$$ such as Power or Mega I would love to do that on a large number of acres.
the house will be 285' by 60'
1. master bed.
2. office/library/den.
3.room for home schooling.
4.2 rooms big enough for 6 or so bunk beds. (To Adopt.)
5. big kitchen/living/dining for the big family
6.2 lane bowling alley.
7. work out room [to keep the kids active.]
8. a room for pool tables/dart boards.
[with enough practice the kids could go pro in bowling/pool/darts.]
9.40 seat movie theater (I guess that could be the living room).
The water will flow into a large cistern, an overflow pipe into a fishpond.
Use that water for a garden outside (bees.)

This sounds very complicated. Still, seeing I am a great advocate for self-responsibility in the life you hopefully, can choose yourself and not have the Govt and Local regulations dictating ever nook and cranny, it will be challenging and satisfying to attend to all your needs. What is the size of the Earthship Tiny House? Also, you seem to have some type of easement behind the fridge? Good idea on the Murphy bed. Did you use car hydraulics for the Murphy Bed? There is an Italian builder that has great ideas on use of space in the Murphy bed. However, the Italian builder's beds are very expensive. I think this tiny house is a good design for senior living as the bed is easily hidden. I have been knocking my head around how to build the toilet into a water closet(W/C) and being able to vent the odors through the green house and out the home itself. Is there anyone else out there who prefers not to see the toilet upon entry and have solved my smell dilemma?

I always see these earthships/ cob buildings in arrid areas. Is it at all feasible to build something like this in Virginia or WVa? Filling cisterns would be easier but would the extra water climate cause issues?
Love it but why not use lithium batteries? Is it the price?
The Tessla Powerwall is Lithium, might be some Earthship out there with that system, but not that I know of. From what I can see at first glance, the cost of the installed 3.3kw Powerwall is 11k usd and can be connected to solar. I honestly don’t know much about that system and would have to take a deeper look for a comparison.

Dumping fuel to level weight in an aircraft isn’t a thing. Please don’t tell people that, it false. In rare emergency cases SOME planes have the ability to dump fuel to prevent an overweight landing. Its very rare that they do and when they do dump fuel its in very specific areas and altitudes where the fuel evaporates before it reaches the ground. Love the Earthship btw.
