      Actually they kinda are. They aren't really growing, they're just raising prices to continue "growth". Age of Sigmar did so bad, they had to rerelease Fantasy into Old World. That is where the spike in sales is really coming from. From players they had CUT OFF. Now those players are back, and GW sees a spike. That means they aren't really growing in a player base. Video gamers are nothing like WarHammer tabletop players. The communities are totally different. Worse, GW is making political maneuvers with the lore, which is already upsetting at least 50% of potential new fans. Just because they are a "big" company in the UK, doesn't mean they are actually that big. This sadly is the peak of GW and they will likely be bought out buy Amazon. It's just business.

    When I've shown Astartes to people they've been blown away and want to know more about the setting. You can find tons of reaction videos where folks who know nothing about 40k lose their minds because it's so cool and unlike anything else. It is a spectacular advertisement for them. They need to release more short-to-medium form videos like this for free instead of behind a pay wall.
    If they'd released Angels of Death monthly on TH-cam it'd have been a much bigger deal and would have built up a massive word of mouth. It's not as good as Astartes, but there's some cool stuff in it.

    It is bizarre how "small ball" GW executives' thinking was about Warhammer+. There's a forum that will discuss GW's financial statements, and I'm frequently amused at how they're all impressed that according to GW, Warhammer+ was a success because it made 3 million pounds off of 2 million pounds of expenses (not the least of the humor coming from the average guy's total ignorance about finance, I bet if I got to see their ledger, I could push around expenses to make it look like 3 million pounds on 20 million pounds of expense. In a hundreds of millions of pounds revenue company, your accountants get to pick and choose where costs are allocated, which again is waaaaaay over the average 40K player's head according to them).
    That being said, imagine how awesome it would be if the company did offer random miniature packs, for like a purpose-made 40K skirmish game. They couldn't call them Loot Boxes because people wouldn't get the sarcasm, but you could package a box with 3 Necromunda gangers, a half dozen Imperial Guard specialist weapons, and half dozen human character heads (to give one possible example of many). Just get a hobby knife and go to town, character cards for the game are in the box. It wouldn't really work because all GW's models now are these nightmarish 11 dimension designs that push together like some kind of unnecessary mind puzzle, but still it's a cool idea. (And also, that reminds me, they do all that to defeat Chinese recasters, probably investing millions of pounds worth of employee time, added manufacturing and tooling difficulty, and inefficient use of space, all to defeat them. That's a weird juxtaposition of actual fact next to the idea that they aren't worried about 3D printing.)

    Just to be that guy: The factory expansion is (for now) purely for inhouse paint production. They are still in talks about more ground (and prob more factory on that ground). Imo they do need another plastic factory or to retool their existing space that comes available. The stock issue is their bottleneck atm?

    • @olith
      @olith 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

      There are two factory expansions planned. The paint one, and then the other is providing the space to move some aspects out of the existing 3 factories and hopefully improve efficiency in production. The plans also suggest new manufacturing jobs will be created eventually. So basically freeing up physical space to improve current processes in current locations rather than adding more machines to make toy soldiers. A lot of the reporting has conflated or confused stuff, but you can find it all on the Nottingham post articles from the last 12 months.

    It doesn’t take long to understand what Games Workshop is all about. Like any other large multinational, there’s nothing particularly unique about them. For example, their store Facebook pages, instead of being hubs of creativity, simply follow a scripted formula, regurgitating the same corporate messaging. History shows that large multinationals often have a predictable lifespan. While Games Workshop is currently thriving and deserves credit for its success, the issue lies in their reliance on repeating what they’ve already done rather than innovating further.
    In the grand scheme of things, yes, they’re successful, but when compared to giants like LEGO, they’re a mere pimple on the radar. It wasn’t too long ago that, after the Lord of the Rings bubble burst, everything seemed to fall off a cliff. That kind of decline is surprisingly easy to trigger. Going mainstream often comes at the cost of creativity, making a brand appear bland and generic-like Hasbro’s Monopoly.
    Ultimately, you need to be careful what you wish for. The Marvel bubble in cinemas has already burst, and the same could easily happen to Games Workshop. Sometimes, it’s better to stay within your niche, remain small, and stay true to your identity rather than trying to conquer everything and risk losing what made you unique in the first place.
