I’m stoked to see the solar getting upgraded because I want y’all to have plenty of power so you can jump on the computer at all hours and finish writing the second installment of the Sophie Danner series! I just finished listening to Ghosts of Royston and it completely blew me away Eric!Definitely the best novel I’ve read or listened to in a very long time (and I plow through 6 - 8 books a month). I’m ready for the next one!!
Good job bein' an extra set of eyes for the skipper Chickadoo. Reminding & handing him the board before he drilled, possibly averted a *costly* mistake. RIVERS BABY! How Are You Young Man‽ 🙏🦉 🏞️🏍️
I would have been down in the salon sleeping until the rain was gone. Where there is rain, there is a thunderstorm just waiting to fry your electronics or those that work out in them
I wasn’t out there in a thunderstorm. That came shortly after. And because I got it done, we were able to get the rest of our “leave list” done and were much farther south when Ernesto blew through. Rain’s just rain and some jobs are best not put off.
Thank you! And yes, it already has. Today, with the tropical storm passing through was the first time we’ve had to charge using the genny since the install.
Be sure to get high speed steel drill bits. If you need to drill stainless you need cobalt drill bits and go slow when drilling stainless, i use a start stop method so as to not burn the tips of the cobalt bits.
@@SailAwayVlog Try using a center drill for the initial drilling. They have a very stiff shank to keep the drill from wandering/breaking. +1 on the cobalt drills for stainless, 135 degree split point cobalt , using lots of coolant, low rpm. (former machinist here)
At 55 cents per watt mono cell type, delivered and available in the Caribbean, that is a good price for less than a pallet quantity. Great to hear panels are producing adequate power. Off grid off brand inverters /charger/ mppt controllers with ok quality are becoming more available. Recently saw one, SUMY, for 24v bat system that could handle 4000w PV at up to 450v, charge bats at 100 amps, put out 3600w 120v pure sine wave AC and take power from utility/generator for 310 bucks. How well/how long it would work in marine environment is a question. Weather-Seems St Martin just barely dodged the Aug 13 near hurricane storm.
Wow, that’s a good price! Right now I have them going through the Outback Flexmax 80 that came with the boat. Working very well. It’s a good mppt, just doesn’t have the networking and monitoring of Victron. We haven’t spoken to anyone in St. Martin yet. We were glad we got moving south when we did though.
@@SailAwayVlog Just a follow up. Looking at the Flexmax 80 specs. I see that you are within 10 watts of the max rec pv input- that is close. Specs indicate normal temp 145vdc max for pv input, so you are well below, but one thing that I could not find in specs is the max PV amps the MPPT can handle. Most of these mid size solar controllers specify max 18-20 amps of incoming pv current per MPPT input, 2 of your panels in series then in parallel have 66vmp and 81voc and 18.8 amps IMP and 19.84 amps ISC (9.4amp IMP x 2 and 9.92 Amps ISC x 2). So really close or maybe over the common 18-20 amp max unless this mppt is rated much higher. Most written specs are a bit conservative to insure circuitry is not taxed to max, but something to be aware of.
I don't wanna be a snitch or anything, but around 5:45 I really saw Loren go towards the Galley empty-handed, and as far as I know, one NEVER goes toward the galley empty-handed. Just saying.. ;)
Guys, you're talking switching from gas to electric batteries. Think twice! We just lost a couple in Canada. Their boat was with electric batteries. They were found dead in the dingy and no trace of the boat. Experts think that the batteries got on fire ...not the first time batteries burn! Be careful with the conversion!
That’s terrible! I’d be curious to know what kind of batteries they had. LifePo4 are less dangerous than AGM. Lithium ion like in scooters, phones, etc. are much more prone to fire when left on chargers.
@@SailAwayVlog no details, just suppositions. They were retired, having the time of their life. He was engineer and did the conversion himself...and then all ended. They were found dead with no injuries inflicted and the boat gone...
@@SailAwayVlog There wasn't any evidence about the boat since it wasn't found. The boat could've been hit by a cargo ship during the night, or severely damaged by a water spout or half submerged cargo container.
Congratulations on the upgrade and the success of getting it done so quickly.🥰
Thank you!! 😊
Great upgrade and great videos.
Thanks 👍

Haha…thanks Rusty! That really means a lot! And I’m definitely gettting there…probably about 2/3 through book 2.
Looks good from my house
Upgrades are always so satisfying to accomplish. Keep your day job😂

Awesome!!!

I always say that you can never have enough power. Have you thought about adding a wind turbine to help out on the cloudy days
1200W of solar that is going to cut down on gennie time.
Nice work and a clean install.

The advantage of being tall. Well done.
Thanks! I try to remind myself of that every day when I hit head on our doorways!
Great video
"Monsterously Kickass" that's funny! Hope everything works out. Always enjoy your vids. Will be "Monsterously" happy to see it all work out!😂
Haha...thanks! So far it's worked out monsterously well.
Good job Eric!!
Thanks!
Mr flexable all that twisting and bending, is a hard days work. Beer time. HAHAHA
Lol…I was feeling it the next couple days!
Good work, as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
So 1200+ watts now? Impressive!
Yeah, it's definitely been a game changer!
Love you guys! Be well. ❤
Thanks so much!
good work with good results
Thank you!

Yeah, this was all aluminum, just a really complex extrusion that kept catching the edge of the bits.

Why are you using a cutting board when you are drilling?
Ha…just looked like one. Just a weird shaped piece of old plywood to make sure the drill bit doesn’t pop through and damage the solar panel.

Hey I love your videos but soo much talking in this one. Lots of fast forwarding. Show don’t tell 😎👍🏼
