To watch the Ogres vs High Elves Rematch, go here: www.miniwargami... Ash and Steve play a 2000 point game of High Elves vs Ogres, with the Dawn Attack scenario!
This High Elf army looks so beautiful! High Elves were the first army that I ever played in any form of mini wargame, probably more than 15 years ago. The green and white color scheme looks fantastic!
Concerning the question on pursuit: If there are more than one unit that's pursuing and one of them ends up in the way of the other you stop 1 inch away from it with the first unit. You can read this in the BRB p. 58, under "PURSUIT INTO AN OBSTRUCTION". Also important side note: If you plan on continuing with the gutstar Ash, at least remember max 3 supporting attacks for monstrous infantry :P ALSO, and this would actually have a lot more impact on the game - when it comes to command group and the gutstar... you have to place command group in the front rank, so that would mean that since you ran full command none of your characters would've been able to sit in the front rank - as such - you would've lost 2 attacks och the tyrant and 1 on the slaughtermaster and steve would've had a lot more attacks going into your ironguts the first round of combat - probably breaking you from combat. Big deal. If you instead took out your muscian and champion you would've at least lost the first round of combat. :) Otherwise great batrep as always! Cheers!
That IS true. So essentially it wouldn't have been such a huge issue anyway, except for all the other initial flaws... but seen as the way it was played...
Gordon Sherburne Nope, they would still just stop behind the bulls, not being able to complete the pursuit. You have to roll that 12 with the first pursuing unit to actually catch him. Fluffwise it is formulated as such in the BRB on p. 58: "Unlike fleeing troops, pursuers maintain some manner of order and formation." - therefore they cannot overrun, or spread out to pass friendly units that are in their way. :P
why does steve never take chances, he always stays back which means he gets shot then charged himself, and yes he should have shot the dogs witht he bolt throwers, the eagles fly behind the leadbelchers and charge, steve also had 9 total for the one fight he wounded the slaughtermaster, just charge and kill the dog its gone then so you can charge next turn
I dont get it either sacrficing the eagles to stop charges would only be worth it if he had significantly better shooting but since he has pretty much no shotting for a high elf army I dont get why he doesn t flank with them instead to win combats by res
When you have Pit of Shades vs the Ogres you block charges and delay with the eagles as long as possible 100% of the time. That spell hard counters the Ogres. I honestly thought this game was an auto lose for Ash but then reavers didn't vanguard in front of bolt throwers and then ash rolled really well on the initiative test on the second Shade cast. If Steve would have reacted too the dogs in anyway this would have been a much different game.
took waaay to long to get the phoenix elves into the fight, i mean the eagles were almost useless, the second troop just stood there when the first group got slaughtered.
I do guess it didn't matter at all but I still find it hilarious that you roll a 6 for the Ironguts and then immediately pick the dice up, roll for the sabertusks and forget you rolled a 6 for the Ironguts and say they have to go in the center :P ... oh well... whatever, right?
Am enjoying your vids a lot Steve and Ash! Rules get better over time and I like the fact that you guys don't let rules get in the way of having fun! Btw bolt throwers side by side? What were you thinking Steve??? :P
Thinking about returning to the hobby after more than a decade out and these vids have been great for picking up the rules... To the extent where I start spotting flaws :/ Big important combat at 38min+ between spears and Gutstar - elves inflict 15 wounds, not the 14 (12+3) Ash counts, and the BSB in the second rank can only use up to a maximum of 3 attacks as per the monstrous support rule so... Steve got screwed :p
units that move backwards or sideways cant wheel. ive noticed peeps wheeling units when moving backwards in a couple of videos. apart from that great video keep it up i enjoy watching the fantasy battles over 40K as dudes with magic and swords are more interesting than pew pew
Also, because warmachines have no base, and no frontage, rear, flank etc. You can close the door to almost any angle you want when charging the warmachines, thus giving you favorable over runs. A good reason not to line them all up! Bit of a shifty move though...
I'm a 40k player but I enjoy watching these Fantasy videos, even though I know nothing about it, and I was curious why Steve didn't just spend a turn charging the Sabertusk, kill it then help out his spearmen in the next turn?
Do not no if this has been sed yet but, monsters infantry can only ever make three attacks in the supporting rank. So your BSB and your champion what have had minus one to their attack.
Hi guys, cheeky actions, a true wargaming vet in action! SCROLL! I was wondering, how much of the stuff did you guys paint yourselves? Ash strikes me as quite the accomplished painter/converter (esp. from seeing his dwarves), how about Steve? Those armies are fucking beautiful, showcase your own stuff please!
very casual movement in this game guys - dunno if it was intentional or not (ie house rule) but in case it wasn't (and I haven't missed changes to movement in End Times), you can't wheel when moving backwards (you can only wheel when moving forwards), you also can't move sideways and forwards in one move.
Andrew J Why is it broken? Most every army can do something similar (Steve does it here with his Eagles, Ash uses a Sabertusk.) Most armies can easily counter it (charge with your own chaff first, shoot it, magic it, panic it...) Using expendable units to try and draw your opponent into a favourable position is part of the tactics of Fantasy. Unless you consider two armies just running up the middle and smashing each other more tactical.
Movement blocking is a basic tactic any warhammer fantasy player should be able to use and should expect. If you can't handle it your just not in the right game, maybe try checkers Andrew J.
Maximus Decimus Meridius I love this idea that a dog character is able to block an entire platoon. And you people actually think it makes sense. I could understand a Battlemech blocking a Battlemech, a Tank blocking a platoon, or something sensible like that, but really, this makes sense to you? I would certainly expect a better class of player than you all if I invested in this game.
8:40 That's incorrect about characters. It specifically states in the book that all characters must be in the front. No room for interpretation there. So if you want four three characters in the unit and you have a regular unit standard then you front rank with ogres is required to be at minimum four models wide. Again, this is because all characters must be in the front and you must have all unit command models in the front rank as well.
Characters- pg 97: "rank-and-file models, except for the command group that must remain in the front rank, are moved to the back ranks to make room for the characters. If there is no more room in the front rank, some characters will have to go in the second rank." Unit Command- pg 92: "Any models that make up a unit's command group must be placed in the front rank of the unit, unless there is not enough room for them to to fit. Where this happens, as many command group models as possible must be placed in the front rank and any remaining models are placed in the rank behind." You are allowed to have characters and/or command models in the second rank. They played it correctly.
Martial Prowess allows an additional rank of supporting attacks. Supporting attacks cannot be made to the side or rear, therefore high elves only get 1 rank to fight to the side and back like every other army out there.
You should get you're self a harness of some sort for the cam or pass it to the other player on each turn. It would help you alot in the troop movement. When i look at you stugling, i cant help but feel helpless that i cant assist you :-P
Never go spearman..... its seaguards ftw :) sure a few more points... but the extra shooting is allways nice, and you should have shadeded his mini deathstar.
44:39 - only an UNENGAGED character can make way. The High Elf lord would not have been able to attack that rear unit he would have had to continue attacking the front one.
Couldn't he have charged the saber tusk and potentially over ran into the next unit? He was blocking but if he had just went for it worst case is he would have taken a charge instead of doing nothing
The Saber Tusk is a cat...not a dog. It's petty yes, but please get the shit right! Canadians! I'm surprised Ash hasn't brought out the CATS sooner, they are fantastic chaff. It would be great to see more of a variety of players and armies on this series. I know you guys are limited to what you have on hand but if your'e charging people for watching half of these, I kinda think you need to make more of an effort in variety.
You mistake the purpose of my comment. You wished for more variety and I'm saying the staff are making content for multiple game systems, not just Fantasy.
Alexander McLaughlan The buffs that the Slaughtermaster and Butcher provide from gut magic are pretty boss for making units tougher and more durable. Plus they're combat beasts.
2 leadership low sabertusks run into short range, easy charge, no cover, of bolt throwers right next to each other for panic.... bolt throwers shoot at boosted toughness 5 generic ogres instead... How much crack were the crew smoking? 40kers moaning about movement blocking.... imagine if your army didnt have pew pew laser guns, how else would you stop the charging khorne berserkers? You would throw a cheap unit out to die. Its a massive part of the game!
Fantasy is over-complicated and more expensive than 40k just because of the Fantasy meta of FUCK HUEG blocks of guys where 10 guys are worth $40. I agree with you.
I'm sofa king lazy You clearly are not familiar with the Fantasy meta. Outside of a few extreme cases such as Skaven and maybe Vampire Counts, most fantasy armies are of comparable model count to standard 40k armies.
At least in 40k Armor is consistent, if maybe not reliable. Sure you can have a 1+ Armor save in Fantasy but good armor means jack with how Fantasy Works. Armor-piercing and any strength modifiers. And don't get me STARTED on those damn Laser-guided Cannons. Still, regardless of how hostile I sounded, each system attracts people for their own preferences and reasons. It's just I'm more of a Sci-fi kind of guy personally and Fantasy isn't grimdark enough to the point that it's silly for me.
Some prefer the AP system of 40k. Some don't. Autocannons ignore 4+ armour but have no effect of 3+ armour bothers some people. 1+ armour is quite a big deal in Fantasy when you consider multiple wound power units such as Demigryphs, Skullcrushers, and the plethora of 1+ save characters (lizardmen cowboys and Dark Elves in particular.) Cannons are pretty accurate but can also misfire and blow themselves up. Most cannons also saw a points increase from 7th to 8th to reflect their reliability. I agree that as you say, to each their own.
wow ash can't math worth shit. I lost track of how many times he counted combat res incorrectly. Then there's the overrun with the dog that should have missed the other bolt thrower. Then there's the wound dice that seem to switch between how many wounds taken and how many wounds remain depending on which is better for ash. Seriously dude. stop cheating.
I've said it before: best WHF batreps on the internet!
This High Elf army looks so beautiful! High Elves were the first army that I ever played in any form of mini wargame, probably more than 15 years ago. The green and white color scheme looks fantastic!
Steve, your hair...is..beautiful. Also, love these Ogre games.
Mistakes aside, these bat reps are the best mostly because of the cheery attitude you guys have when you play.
yes thank you
Concerning the question on pursuit: If there are more than one unit that's pursuing and one of them ends up in the way of the other you stop 1 inch away from it with the first unit.

I love the beautifully painted models. Keep playing! A good re-read of the main rulebook will do you guys some good.
Steve seems like such a cool guy. Please keep making these awesome videos!
Both of you are a great bonus for the MWG company!
Would love to battle one of you when I come to Canada in the future.
Thanks for watching guys! If you want to catch up, hit me up here or on Facebook! facebook.com/outofthebasementintothestreets
Always fun. Love the battle reps .. look forward each week!
Some rules are still being played oddly but no problem. Still love le reps
why does steve never take chances, he always stays back which means he gets shot then charged himself, and yes he should have shot the dogs witht he bolt throwers, the eagles fly behind the leadbelchers and charge, steve also had 9 total for the one fight he wounded the slaughtermaster, just charge and kill the dog its gone then so you can charge next turn
Yeah, it's kind of painful to watch...

Elves outmaneuvered by Ogres... now I have seen everything!
Horhe Vamp He played so reserved his reavers were in position to win the game 3 times over
Thats what happens when you bring 2 fat, expensive units of elves and nothing else
@@noblepush6 dude... 2014
Am enjoying your vids a lot Steve and Ash! Rules get better over time and I like the fact that you guys don't let rules get in the way of having fun! Btw bolt throwers side by side? What were you thinking Steve??? :P
Love seeing the pointy ears take a beating like that :)
Guys in the 2nd rank are limited to 3 attacks each as Monsterous Infantry.
Thinking about returning to the hobby after more than a decade out and these vids have been great for picking up the rules... To the extent where I start spotting flaws :/
Big important combat at 38min+ between spears and Gutstar - elves inflict 15 wounds, not the 14 (12+3) Ash counts, and the BSB in the second rank can only use up to a maximum of 3 attacks as per the monstrous support rule so... Steve got screwed :p
Love the paint scheme on the ogres!
Do some triumph and treachery again! I love seeing the ogres in it!
Like this much better than the original Mini War Gaming. Dave is fun for a while but he can't carry the show alone :)
units that move backwards or sideways cant wheel. ive noticed peeps wheeling units when moving backwards in a couple of videos. apart from that great video keep it up i enjoy watching the fantasy battles over 40K as dudes with magic and swords are more interesting than pew pew
Ash don't forget if you are ASF (all elves) and your initiative is equal to or higher than your enemy, you get to re roll missed rolls to hit :)
Ty for another great batrep!
Isn't shooting distributed as shooting? At 16:32 it seems one model got two wounds from the bolt throwers.
Wasn't your lord immune to psychology? If so he can't flee as a charge reaction.
You got to remember the wound dices Ash :P Ive noticed that you first put how many wounds taken then they are how many wounds left.
Steve, if you are staying back, use 50 archers, 15 elyrion reavers, 30 sea guard or 30 archers and 10 sisters of averlorn.
The idea was fine, he was trying to get as many Pit of shadows off as he could, but the dice were not helping.
Hey Steve, next time just shoot one dog and the other will probably panic on ld4 - saves a lot of bullets and could have saved you the game.
im pretty sure dat sabretooth overrun into 2nd weaponteam was wrong, the angle ddidnt seem right
Also he overran after initial combat.
Not the first round of combat so doesn't overrun. 24:37 which is second round.
Also, because warmachines have no base, and no frontage, rear, flank etc. You can close the door to almost any angle you want when charging the warmachines, thus giving you favorable over runs. A good reason not to line them all up!
Bit of a shifty move though...
I put my warmachines on small 40 of 50 mm bases to avoid that. I know they don't have an official base size though.
Also with crew but I get why people don't use them in tournies.
I'm a 40k player but I enjoy watching these Fantasy videos, even though I know nothing about it, and I was curious why Steve didn't just spend a turn charging the Sabertusk, kill it then help out his spearmen in the next turn?
Great job guys!
Do not no if this has been sed yet but, monsters infantry can only ever make three attacks in the supporting rank. So your BSB and your champion what have had minus one to their attack.
in the book Khaine, you have all the spells of the chosen lore, and you roll 4d6 for magic
I only play with models I paint myself. Steve is mostly the same. :)
Would have been a good idea to split the bolt throwers on each flank I reckon... and protect one of them with the horse archers...
Any chance we can see some different armies? Seems like it's always Ogres or Dwarfs.
Finally some Kitties, about bloody time!!!
good video. Nice job
very casual movement in this game guys - dunno if it was intentional or not (ie house rule) but in case it wasn't (and I haven't missed changes to movement in End Times), you can't wheel when moving backwards (you can only wheel when moving forwards), you also can't move sideways and forwards in one move.
Also the BSB was in the second rank as well as the champion of the ironguts so they would only get 3 attacks each instead of their 4 :)
Did I just witness moving blocking? Really? Wow. Have some class.
Really? Throwing up chaff to block dangerous units is one of the core strategies of the game. Can you really blame a player for making a smart play?
thezoned101 if movement blocking exists to where a dog character can stop an entire platoon, the rule is broken. Simple.
Andrew J Why is it broken? Most every army can do something similar (Steve does it here with his Eagles, Ash uses a Sabertusk.) Where is Ash in the newer episodes of OWW? Haven't seen him in any of those that came out since in late '15 or sth
He has his own channel now. Guerrilla miniature games
+Steven Merriman thanks pal, I think I found his channel already 10 minutes after I wrote this comment
show us how to paint these awesome green high elves :D please
Steve is a werewolf
1:02:05 They are still in combat because they were in contact with his unit.
High Elves isn't Steves kind of army it seems. More undead!!
Great game!:)
Hi,
How did you paint your Ogres?
8:40 That's incorrect about characters. It specifically states in the book that all characters must be in the front. No room for interpretation there. So if you want four three characters in the unit and you have a regular unit standard then you front rank with ogres is required to be at minimum four models wide. Again, this is because all characters must be in the front and you must have all unit command models in the front rank as well.
Check the rules for Command Models.
Yeah I was speaking to a fellow player up at my LGS and he pointed that out.
Characters-
pg 97: "rank-and-file models, except for the command group that must remain in the front rank, are moved to the back ranks to make room for the characters. If there is no more room in the front rank, some characters will have to go in the second rank."
Unit Command-

You are allowed to have characters and/or command models in the second rank. They played it correctly.
Hey guys, if you love this batrep try out vault membership. If u buy for a year it's only 3.00 a month an you get so many more awesome videos.
High elves can attack backwards with 2 ranks because they have Martial Prowess.
Martial Prowess allows an additional rank of supporting attacks. Supporting attacks cannot be made to the side or rear, therefore high elves only get 1 rank to fight to the side and back like every other army out there.
cigarrobb Oh I see. If that is the case I have been attacked by 2 ranks to the rear and flanks.
Why in the name of Khaine did Steve not protect his bolt throwers better? Against ogres, so good.
+Alyssin Williams I don't think he's that good at high elves. He didn't even get his phenix guard into combat, his best unit. srry steve
+rglaz0311 In the 100 or so episodes since he's improved!
COURSE STEVE PLAYS HIGH ELVES!!! ITS DA EARS I TELL YA!!! DA EAAAAARS!
You should get you're self a harness of some sort for the cam or pass it to the other player on each turn. It would help you alot in the troop movement. When i look at you stugling, i cant help but feel helpless that i cant assist you :-P
Damn it Matt, buy the man a go pro!
Ash lost the combat against the big spearman block by one in the first round of combat. The slaughter master took 3 wounds, not 2
nice battle
Pit of shades is crazy! Unit deleted!
Obviously way late to the party here, but doesn't the Giantbreaker Big Name require you to take a Slave giant?
Never go spearman..... its seaguards ftw :) sure a few more points... but the extra shooting is allways nice, and you should have shadeded his mini deathstar.
44:39 - only an UNENGAGED character can make way. The High Elf lord would not have been able to attack that rear unit he would have had to continue attacking the front one.
23:32 Steve is at least 200 points. Sadly he is only BS3.
Space balls have gone to plaid!
Couldn't he have charged the saber tusk and potentially over ran into the next unit? He was blocking but if he had just went for it worst case is he would have taken a charge instead of doing nothing

The Saber Tusk is a cat...not a dog. It's petty yes, but please get the shit right! Canadians!

Did you do know that they produce videos for about 4-5 different miniature games and are working on projects for each?
Yes. I have loads on my plate and I can still identify a cat from a dog.
Did you know this is not the only video Ash calls Saber Tusks dogs?
You mistake the purpose of my comment. You wished for more variety and I'm saying the staff are making content for multiple game systems, not just Fantasy.
hard to watch for the great amount of significant mistakes in rules made especially by Ash
Umm...Steve set up first. He should have gone first unless ASH rolled a 6 on a die.
Nice
I want more dwarfs!!!!!
why use a mage in an ogre army?
Alexander McLaughlan The buffs that the Slaughtermaster and Butcher provide from gut magic are pretty boss for making units tougher and more durable. Plus they're combat beasts.
is plaid our national colour??,and seriously how big is Steve,Ash is not a small guy and steve looks like he carries ash in his pockets :)
GG
