Things u need r: soil+ compost And clay and a sprayer and a bucket/round vessel.
*U can get clay from local potters r from near by lakes (banks)
Soil: Clay
1:2 ratio..
Meaning,u have to use for 1 part of soil+compost mixture to 2 parts of clay soil..
Simply,if u use 1 cup of soil+ compost mixture add 2 cups of clay soil to it..
And after making the granules dry them under sun and bake the soil at hig temperature for 30+ minutes..
*Be careful while baking, kids do only under elder/adult supervision.. take safety measures if required.
This can be the very less expensive/ cheap along with quality Aquasoil.
U can make ur own versions of aquasoil by just following the method as shown in video..
U CAN MAKE DIFFERENT sizes of granules according to ur needs..
Use all organic compost, soil and earthen clay..
DON'T USE ANY SYNTHETIC CLAY.
Use of clay is must! It can only be neglected if ur using soil which contains high amounts of clay in it already(soil using which u can easily make shapes and when it dries it gets hard similar to rock).
U can find clay near Lake banks or get it from local potters or purchase natural clay ( also earthen clay) online.
Incase,if u don't get clay u can make ur own clay from normal garden soil.

If you had any tool to make the granulation process faster what would you use? I got a 350 gallon tank I'm thinking about re-scaping. I could just use soil and call it a day, but I don't like the idea of wanting to replace a plant and accidently pulling the soil out and into the water column.
Bro u can make a granulator machine! Rotating a tumblur(or some like in vessel shape) at some angle less than 90° and using this mixture technique bwould make is effort less and faster,easier:) I just have idea,still I haven't experimented! So do try in small scale ,so if it works,then upgrade according to ur need! Hope it helps bro:)
Making Aquasoil for this big tank would take lot time, manpower!

This soil making is better i did it.I purchased soil too and made diy too I found out that this soil gets nice hard if given nice heat treatment.The soil which we purchase when crushed gets easily crushed but not this soil.Cheap and effective way to make good quality soil at home. 👍

Ya u can, use vermicompost/normal compost and dilute this any compost in organic soil(normal soil) and use this mixture...
U can dilute as per ur needs, whether u want the Aquasoil to be more mineral/nutrient content r less u can adjust it 👍

Bro can we roast them just in the powdered form rather than making granules.
You can, you have to wet it first though, but it will be a rock. You can smash the rock for natural looking granules.

I followed the same way as you did but due to excitement i just put on oven for 10 mins and once I dropped few balls in water.....it melted...is it because i did not heat it enough on fire....?
i did it for 10 mins... should 45 minutes suffice the need.

Great job my friend. Caution long read :-) With that much of an effort and manhours, it should sell for 1.5 times the cost of branded soil. Overtime can you share a video of the compacting factor of this home made soil of yours? as all super expensive soils compact over time including miracle mud - I am a salt water guy you see... freshwater is too difficult for me, my montis, stags, acros, stylos, pocilos, gonios, euphilia, zoas, bubble tips, Magnificas and Haddonis never melted even when my tank was new, but I got a 20g betta tank from a friend for free with a crown tail as an inhibitant, when I added the most expensive plants with expensive soil, they melted in 2 days, FW is difficult than reef tanks. From the compost core can you share what is the nutrient intake of the plants? are the roots able to get through to the core to extract nutrient from the compost core. It will be interesting to see if root tabs and daily dosing will be needed in the long run with this soil. Best to pre heat the oven at 300 and then put the baking tray in and then increase the temperature slowly. Though a saltwater guy by hobby, I had used this method in my refugium but just 2:1 ratio mixed baked, powdered, sieved and then put in the refugium topped with fine dry aragonite, Halimeda and grape Caulerpa growing very well in the refugium section. Halimeda getting the Ca from Aragonite and the daily Ca, Alk and Mg dosing for SPS twice a day through the newly replaced Kamoer singles, trust me the cheaper 4 channel dosing pump brands suck, the dosing pump gets stuck for no reason, in my fuge the penetrated roots get the nutrition from the baked soil. Great job you. Waiting for more videos for the compacting factor, I never pelleted mine for the refugium but the great thing is nothing ever leached in the water column, under water flora and fauna is just thriving in my 120 gallon reef. Never used AF lifesource as this home made baked soil in the refuge is taking care of things in the current condition, went on holidays, no cleaning for 2 weeks, yet no algae on the glass, the DIY baked soil doesn't leach silicates, there is a bit of phosphates and the marcos love it and consume it so much so that I am now adding phosphates, looks like the part of my garden where I got the soil from had a bit of iron so my Gracillarias is staying as red as ever and thriving. . Looking forward to staring a brand new planted setup, my first one ever, 75 gallon in my bedroom as I have now broken down the closet, your DIY soil would greatly help. Gosh salt water is different from FW planted but concept is the same, dosing, bacteria et all minus the salt :-)

I completed the last part but the colour did not turn black it's dark brown . I used red clay and red soil . It's not dissolved in water unless applied pressure will update you after cycling the tank
U use red material n want black colour 🤣! Oly outer layer will turn black (as it gets in contact) ss it will not!

I tryed this but after baking it's melting with water 😢
Do follow all the methods as shown in video! Add more clay and bake little longer at high temperature.
Do check out testing video of diy aquasoil.
All aquasoils melt over time,but it should easily last fir 2 years if not disturbed.

This work say, its extensive works and leave so much foot prints and better buy ready made aqua soil than be a contributor on air pollution.
Not all hobbyist can afford some expensive commercial aqua soil,this is an alternative video on how to make your own,and what do you mean by saying "be a contributor on air pollution?" are you serious bro?
don't use organic compost and soil you are going to have ammonia and algae. Just use clay only
The only thing that i dont like is...the setting of fire near the plants which i think is cruel to plants near the extreme heat.

You will lose all the nutrients in the vermicompost when baking... besides, it's rather expensive if you have to buy them. But if you have access for a lot of it, I am curious how it turns out if you make them?
