      I grew up there in the 80's.
      Back then you couldn't step outside your door in Oakland or Berkeley without tripping over a guitarist.

    I grew up in the midst of this scene (from Montclair in the Oakland hills). I remember thrash metal being invented by local garage bands in the late 70's. Even before Lazz Rockit and Exodus.

    There was a lot of hype about Gibson, and I wanted to be the cool kid and skipped out. Boy did I miss out! I have a V and a Les Paul, and they are fantastic. I play thrash, and thanks Gibson for promoting this thrash Documentary!

      Jeff Hanneman played a Gibson Les Paul with a whammy bar.
      edit: it was black, with red blood-like paint splatter and an actual chain (dog lead)
      across the front

      @Lazerbox : I was there in the midst of all of this too, and so know why most didn't play Gibsons: because most of us could never afford one. I can assure you that a whole lot more of us would have had them otherwise.
      But it is damned cool that Gibson went for it anyway, I agree.

      I can tell you for certain that many of us were actually fans, and still called them posers anyway. lols
      In fact, I even worked for Dave Meniketti's grandfather at his (and I kid you not) Music/Furniture store on Grand Avenue in Oakland. First place I gave guitar lessons. Mr. Meniketti could tear it up on accordian too. lols

      Some of us had a saying back then: _Only boring people ever get bored._
      I've never actually been bored. What's that like?
