    1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air II Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 317
    1968 was the second year for the Pontiac Firebird, a car originally marketed to compete in the still fairly-new Pony car segment started by the insanely popular Ford Mustang. All the American OEs jumped on the bandwagon, and Pontiac’s Firebird was intended to be a bit more upscale to compete with other luxury pony car entries like the Mercury Cougar. The lesson here is that fast cars can look unassuming and still be potent performers!

    Very rare car.... All ya need to do is look at the exhaust ports on the cylinder head, especially the inboard two to know thats not a standard D port 400! Not a poncho guy but still love it!👍👍

    Another fantastic example of a Pontiac wolf in sheeps clothing. Thanks V8TV for finding and filming these beasts. This one is extra special in my book. I'm amazed at the uninformed buyer who was "so" lucky to stumble upon this jewel, W/O even knowing it's unique hi-lights. The restorer did a beautiful job.

    Love the sleeper look of this car. No stripes, graphics, spoilers, fancy wheels, or bucket seats. Literally nothing more than what it needs just to go fast. My kind of muscle car.👍👍

      Yeah. The owner says, "We thought it was just an HO". Definitely not a Pontiac enthusiast, not knowing about the round exhaust ports, "screaming" at you, and perfectly visible on the center ports. Some guys have all the luck.

    I had a 68 firebird with a 400. It was the fastest car I ever owned. It would bark the tires in second and it was an automatic.

    I still think the early Firebirds are still under priced in the collector car market.
    Even watching Mecum or looking thru collector cars for sale magazines I rarely see many cross the block or for sale. They must be in collections or more rare than people think.
    Just an occasional average basic 350 version goes between 20-40k.

    The deal with Pontiac is they are all torquey, the 400 was a big hydraulic cam in with near perfect bore stroke ratio for a 2v head, Mopar nailed this as well. It's still over square at 4.12x3.75. While no factory muscle era Pontiac car engine could rev safely that doesn't matter that much when 2 valve wedge heads roll over under 6k. While it would never makinh the hp of of Chevy or a Hemi or Boss 9 it made gobs of torque. In modern cars HP is king as 6+ gear ratio's can keep you at the top of the power band. When limited to only 2-4 ratio's torque was king when the difference between shift was 2000+rpm.
    Make no mistake HP is what actually accelerates all cars low and high, but it's not peak hp it's average HP between shifts. Bottom end torque is why engines with good bottom end torque ruled the muscle car era. Strong bottom end torque means more HP down low. (RPM * T) / 5252=HP run the numbers you will see why it matters and why it matters less today. Sure you could gear a muscle car for a quick 1/4 but that meant cruising and 55mph was turning well about 3100+, which is overkill for engines making the that kind of torque I'm cruising at a half to 2/3rds the rev range. Drop the 10 speed auto in any muscle car and HP will win every race with ease.

      Fundamentally the mechanics of reciprocating Machinery it is torque that moves a vehicle .
      These cars were well known for being in the 12 seconds nearly four decades ago and recently in the last several years the ram are two cars have pierced into the 9 second range.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashqelon7267 Torque is a measure of twisting force, you can make a ton of torque and accomplish nothing, like when you try turn a stuck bold. HP is a measure of work over time and acceleration is the work in question here.
      Regardless where you are in the rev range it's HP that will determine how fast you accelerate in a given amount of time. You can always multiply torque with gearing, you can never gain HP with gearing.
      None of these cars in stock form are going to run 9's. Even with a blueprinted engine running 12's would be a challenge. All the Pure Stock and FAST rules distorts the capabilities of these cars.
