  • Caregivers may need to transport a patient using a Hoyer lift at home or in the hospital. In this video, NancyTheNP explains how to use a Hoyer lift safely and transport a patient from bed to wheelchair. Most caregivers meet common Hoyer lift problems. While there are many ways to use a Hoyer lift with a full-body sling, you can choose your main purpose including toileting, leisure, or comfort. Of course, it's important for patients to go from their wheelchair to bed and visa versa. Watch how one person can use a Hoyer lift at home. Anyone can learn how to safely lift a patient using a Hoyer lift.

      This video made me cry😢. I was mommy's caregiver until she left this world. She was petrified when it came to the hoyer lift. But, as you said, when you gently explain in a reassuring way what you're going to do, everything works out! I was alone with mommy and actually used the lift to elevate her which helped when changing her bedding. One day as I was getting mommy's sheets she was making funny faces and swinging in the lift🤣😂. I said, Mommy you're not afraid anymore huh! I then grabbed my phone and took a photo. I treasure that pic now☹. Mommy has been gone since 2017. I miss her terribly😢. Your video is EXCELLENT and extremely informative! I did EVERYTHING exactly as YOU did! Thank you for helping people. God Bless You!❤❤🙏🙏🙏

    Thank you for this video. My 52 year old mom hasn’t been home since June 23rd. She is wheelchair-bound (for now). She will be coming home from the hospital between tomorrow and Friday with palliative care and we have been supplied a manual hoyer lift similar to that one. No one has instructed me on its use yet. It has a 450 lb weight capacity. My mom is 5’9” and 325 lbs. I will be using this often, as she has many appointments and is on hemodialysis.

    I actually had to get lifted by this as part of my training, I was not a fan, I don't like being touched or man handled personally so I always talk through the procedure and if my people are verbal I make sure to ask before touching.

      Hi Kaity, thanks for commenting. It is very important to have the person you are lifting be aware of what is happening...even if you are not sure he/she can hear you or understands. Using a calm voice goes a long way to alleviate fears and get better cooperation. I will be doing a video on using a walker and a cane. I do have one on using a wheelchair to transfer out of bed. Hi Kaity R, I know it's been over a year since you posted this comment. I wanted to mention that even if your patient is nonverbal or deaf they can still sense if you are speaking to them. It's good to describe what you are doing just as you would with a patient who is verbal and has hearing. There was a man who was in a vegetative state but came out of it. He said he appreciated when staff would talk to him as if he were any other person. Although he could not respond he really enjoyed when people spoke to him or knocked and said hello before moving him or bathing him.

    You NEED to do a video on how to lift a person that's fallen on the floor. I got one of these specifically for that reason. My son-in-law and I both could not get my wife up from having fallen down. I finally had the need to use the lift for that very reason and I'm here to tell you, it's quite a different procedure than picking a person up from the bed or a chair.

    • @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597
      @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there. The hoyer lift is not meant to lift people off the floor, It is only for safe transfers from bed to chair and back. If a person falls on the floor, you need to call 911 and let the e m t's and police help pick the person up. Then, the person needs to be a valley waited after the fall. I hope this helps you understand the use of a hoyer lift. Take care, and please subscribe!

    • @armyrabb1
      @armyrabb1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@caregiversuccessbynancythe4597 actually, after I wrote this, I found three videos giving instructions on how to lift from the floor from three different lift manufacturers, including Hoyer. When my wife falls, it’s not a hard fall, it’s more of a slide off the bed or a slip off the toilet. EMTs and police are not necessary, she just needs help getting back up. Incidentally, we did do the lift correctly, according to the instructional videos; I guess I’m smarter than I look.

    Great educational video. I suggest bringing the wheelchair to the patient in the hoyer lift once she is away from the bed rather than moving the Patient in the hoyer lift across the room. The less you have to push a patient in a hoyer lift, the safer the transfer.

    • @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597

      Thank you for your comment. The reason the wheelchair is across the room is because the transfer was done with one person assist. By propping the wheelchair against the wall, it eliminated the need for another other person to hold the wheelchair from tipping. Best case scenario is having another pwrson to assist you.

    Thanks for this Nancy!! I have a few questions.......I just got my Hoyer lift for my wife, and it also has Chains. What are the chains for?? And the sling I got is a Commode full body sling, there are Color coded loops on the sling, why are they color coded? So I am guessing I won't need the chains, but just wondered what they are for again? So I will put the Loops of the sling on those hooks like you are doing, correct? Any other help would be Appreciated!! Thanks in advance! Also, I have carpet in the bedroom where I will be using this, but it's matted down and old. Will I have problems pushing the lift with carpet? I only have to push the lift about 4-5 feet each time I use it, back and forth. Thanks again.

      Hi Richard, basically it is the same process as putting someone in a chair, but you would need a bigger space to maneuver the Hoyer lift. Also, the sling would have to be placed just so that the hole is in the right position to avoid soiling.If you would like to call me at 844-40-NANCY we could discuss further? Take care, Nancy the NP

    • @MidnightPhant0m1

      Get one of those commode or shower chair with wheels for better positioning . Place it next to the bed. Have her Hoyer lift you from the bed to the commode, then she can wheel you to the toilet. She can place it on top of the toilet.

    • @wirefeed3419
      @wirefeed3419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this is old but others may see this, it sounds like your reclined position may be from the sling straps adjustments. Try making the leg straps longer and or the upper body straps shorter to put you in a more upright position when lifted.

    • @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597
      @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! You DO NOT remove the sling. It remains under the person so you can eventually transfer him/her back to bed. First, it is difficult to remove without causing skin shearing and second, it is nearly impossible to get the sling back under the person properly so that there are no wrinkles or unevenness, so leave the sling under the person. • @caregiversuccessbynancythe4597

      Hi Kristi, Yes the hoyer lift wheels should be opened and locked as you're cranking the person up off the bed. Then they are unlocked , roll it across the room, open the legs up and you don't have to lock them when you're lowering someone in a wheelchair. Once you're getting ready to lower the hoyer into the wheelchair is the best time to lock it if you can. Hope this helps. 😀

I've tried transferring her using a strap, or towel around her back but it's incredibly difficult and/or I end up leaving her in pain. She's in a small-ish room on carpet and the only way to do this is to get the wheelchair as close as possible, count to 3, heave-ho, and move her over and vice versa. I'm worried that someday I, or someone else, will end up dropping her and really doing a number on her. Thoughts or suggestions?

Yes, it is more difficult if someone is contracted for sure, and you certainly need to use good judgment if you feel you need more than one person to help using a lift. The concern is when you are alone like we were during COVID and had to be safe and effective so that the person would not stay in bed, get pneumonia, bed sores, and further contractures.

Staff was minimized since they were getting sick...we as caregivers need to be resourceful and resilient everyday, especially during a pandemic. Also, I was a house calls clinician and most of the time there was only one caregiver in the home, so is it unlawful to teach someone about safe transfer? Without the Hoyer, bedsores, pneumonia, contractures, and other medical problems would ensue causing unnecessary hospitalization. I have gotten more than 73K views showing how much the need was. Take care and Happy New Year 😊

    We need to see a very heavy person having taken a fall, lying on the floor hurting, not able to move much himself. We need to see how you get that sling under him & attached to the lift

      Hi there! First, someone that is hurt needs a 911 call so that he/she can be assessed for injuries before moving.
      Secondly, the hoyer does not have that use and is not made to pick people up from the floor. It is only for transporting from bed to chair and back.
      If you have a heavy person , make sure the lift and the sling are appropriate for the size of the person to prevent any injury. Hope this helps, and God Bless! Please subscribe to my channel!

    i work in a home where mom refuses to use the hoyer lift..i suggested a hoyer lift so i can use it...all mom cares about is how the bedroom looks fancy bed..i suggested to mom to get a bed that moves up and down...she got one now it is broke so she went back to a different bed that is nothing but a pain in the neck..the person i take care of is close to 100lbs dead weight and now mom expects me to use a wedge in the bed to pull kid up on ...that kid is so heavy and i am not going to injure myself doing it..again this morning i suggested getting using the hoyer lift that way i can easily move the kid up onto the wedge..mom said we are not using the hoyer lift..they have one it is in the garage but she flat out refuses to use it..might be easy for her to put kid on wedge when she has a husband to help her...i am by myself at night working 3rd shift while they sleep....a hoyer would help me tremendously...i am not taking chances of hurting/injuring my back to pull a 100lb kid up in bed on a wedge...injuring my back doing so when it could be prevented...

      trying to pull 100lbs of dead weight up in bed and propped up on a wedge is not easy especially when the bed is low in the first place...i have worked for this family for 10 years..i am about ready to start looking for another job..they have a hoyer i could use but the mom refuses to get it out and use it..she not even thinking about me...well i have to think about myself and i am not going to injure my back trying to pull this 100lb dead weight person up in bed...

      Hello, I hear your frustration... Using the lift would be easy. Could you have a visiting nurse support you by coming in and talking with the family about the use of the hoyer lift? What are the barriers? Is it because the kid is afraid? The parents are afraid? They're not going to want to lose you after ten years of you being there. Just for kicks tell him you'd like to try it and see how it goes.... Let me know what else I can do to support you.🙂

      Hi there! Make sure when you position the lift under him, his head is not lying on the sling. This way, he will be more upright.

    We used to have lift in storage but then one of the farmers completely ran all over our storage building with the lift in there and they threw it in a dump pile, so rude... now we don’t have one but I really need something different to transfer my grandma... she can barely stand with help... I’ve been using a gait belt under her rear to help her stand but has she’s gotten weaker and it’s gotten harder for me... my fingers are starting to ache and my wrists pop all the time now. And I’m 24... I need to find another way to save my hands because I am an artist... I wear work gloves when transferring but doesn’t help much

      wow, it's sounds like you need another hoyer lift, lol. Maybe a physical therapist to evaluate your grandmother's mobility would be good. They can determine what she needs to transfer. Can you get your HCP to order one?

      Hi there! You actually leave the sling on the wheelchair So you can reverse the process when it's time to put the person to bed.

      Hi there! If you have worked with caregivers in the home, and most of the time there is only one, you teach safe transfer using a Hoyer lift with one person assist. Add a pandemic and now you are alone with no help and a device you do not know how to use or how to use when you are without help. Safety is key and it can be done, so never say never. lol 😀

      Hi there! Since I was using the hoyer with one person, I used the wall to stabilize the wheelchair as I was lowering the person and holding the back of the sling from the front. We become resourceful and remain safe when working alone. Yes, I did lock the chair both when raising and lowering the hoyer. Thanks for watching and take care!
