A rider (usually the lead rider at the start) pulls out because he has served the purpose of setting up the pace for their team. It's better to leave entirely then to drag behind, because the time is judged from when the last rider of each team crosses the finish. That is also the reason why they all bunch up at the end :)

The time stops when the 3rd rider of the team passes the line, so the one Australian was able to drop and it doesn't matter... it just putts them a little disadvantage, because they are faster with 4 riders then with 3 riders, because with 4 riders the breaks (from being at the front) each riders gets are longer. The reason he dropped was probably because he couldn't keep up with the speed anymore. In that situation it's better to leave, because otherwise you will just slow the other riders of your team down.

Ride 4km faster than the other teams. The fact that there are two teams on the track at a time is deceiving. It's basically a team time trial, but they can get the event done more quickly by starting 2 teams on opposite sides (so they don't interfere or impede each other).

Aaron Walker you only need three riders to finish, so one rider will usually push really hard near the end and then drop out. The Aussies really pushed hard in this one and lost the fourth rider quite early. That is always risky because the remaining three have to keep the pace and can't afford to loose another one.
