Lovecraft smiling is something you just don't see these days, it's always the serious stern look, but here you can imagine him just joking and laughing with his friend
When LoveCraft smiles, it appears that he is hiding some dark, sardonic secret, or is hatching some kind of evil plan. Or maybe its because Brown Jenkin is out of frame, scampering and tittering at his feet, while the Black Man is holding out the book and an ink pen filled with blood. Whats great about LoveCraft (aside from the obvious) is he also loved animals, and had a great sense of humor. For instance, in The Whisperer in Darkness, there is a line from Akeley where he mentions "Tshaggua, the amorphous toad like being mentioned in the Necronomicom and the Comorian myth-cycle of the Atlantean high priest Klarkash-Ton" Anyone familiar with LoveCrafts "circle" of writer friends understands the little tongue in cheek nod to Clark Ashton Smith.
Seeing Lovecraft smile is actually, a relief for his life was such a series of sad and forlorn disappointments. Why do we North Americans treat our geniuses so awfully in literature and the arts? It is so tragic in our history. He reminds me of Edger Allen Poe in the misery he endured.
Lovecraft, Derleth and Campbell have been my sleep companions for many years. Nothing like some cosmic, existential horror to get you those deep dreams
I hate to give in to victim-blaming, but god damn did Gilman reap what he sowed. I guess intelligence and stupidity aren't mutually exclusive after all.
Howard and his pal look so happy in this picture, grinning, it's nice to see; the laughter is in his eyes.
Been reading Lovecraft for 30 years and this is only the second photograph i've seen of him. And he's actually smiling 😄😍

Are they having a laugh at nautical looking knee brows?
