I am always amazed by the choreography in Hamilton, and then remember they have to learn two lots for when / if the revolve doesn’t work - it is so integral!!! Huge shout out to all the moving parts!
Charles Simmons GW is a treat! He started playing him in the German production of Hamilton. I saw him five times and he was phenomenal. I was so happy when he as well as three other cast members were able to transfer straight to the UK tour. They did this show in two languages! Also Billy Nevers being male Beyoncé is so accurate!! Hamilton has a million layers and covers so much of the human experience and evokes all kinds of emotions that I feel like I learn something new every time.
I finally got to see Hamilton on tour in Edinburgh and it was amazing. By chance I ended up at the British Sign Language interpreted performance, which was fascinating. I think the interpreter deserved a medal - I have never seen someone sign so fast! 😂
I saw you as I was leaving the Birmingham show. I did a double take thinking I’m definitely not in London 😂 The performance that evening so terrific! I’ve seen the show in London 52 times and now twice on tour in Birmingham. The tour cast reminds me of the original London cast and those first initial few years of Hamilton in the west end were so great. It played to sold out audiences every night and there was a palpable excitement each time seeing it. Which I think that magic has long left the Victoria Palace. Shaq is now up there as my favourite Hamilton he did stuff with the character and performance than I’d never seen done before and he’s just a breath of fresh air.
I wrote my dissertation on Angelica Skyler and Miranda’s music choices when writing her character. It is a fascinating piece to study as there are so many nuances to explore
I watched this production of Hamilton in March for my birthday - and it was my first time! I’m a HUGE musical theatre fan and managed to avoid the majority of spoilers for Hamilton because I was told how amazing the show was. My boyfriend and I went, and he’s not a musical theatre fan, but listens to rap and hip hop. Within the first 10 minutes I watched as he started leaning forward in his seat and tapping along to the music. He listens to the soundtrack more than me!!! I think it translates really easily for British audiences, with King George being a standout moment! The only criticism I have for the show has nothing to do with the performance but instead the audience - lots of people had seen/listened to Hamilton in some way and we had a couple groups of people who were singing along to the show (not loudly but if you sit next to them you can hear). I know it’s been out for years but there will always be new people, and it really damped the experience for my boyfriend and I. But otherwise a stellar experience!!
Maya was my Eliza when I saw it on the West End! She completely blew me away and I'm so happy for her that she's now Eliza for the tour. She deserves all the recognition for her performance, I really loved it.
The bucket hat really is Bad Cinderella's lasting legacy... 😂 So glad you guys are getting a solid tour. I've seen 2 tour companies of Hamilton in the US and both were SPECTACULAR. Hamilton uses the revolve so well and i adore the set.
Thanks! I love Hamilton for the word play, choreography, and music. Howard Ho has some great videos on the musical theatre references in Hamilton. I was lucky enough to see the OBC and original West End cast. I also went to a chat with David Korins. For the U.S. tour, He said they do advance work at each theatre to figure out what might be needed to successfully stage it. I don’t remember the number, but it takes at least 8 tractor trailers to move the set.
Was lucky enough to see this tour twice when it was in Edinburgh at the Festival Theatre. Easily my favourite musical and one of the most electrifying live experiences imaginable having seen the West End production twice in its first two years (went in fairly blind beyond a few song snippets that first time. ) I took my brother to see when I went to the tour that second time because I hadn't realized he wanted to go when I booked my wheelchair-access tickets soon after they went on sale. It was his first experience with the show and he enjoyed it so much that he put the soundtrack on his immediate Spotify rotation. Wait for It is his favourite song (good choice.)
I saw the tour at the Festival Theatre with my brother as well. My brother's not the biggest fan of musical theatre, but he really enjoyed the pro-shot of Hamilton when he saw it on disney+, so we decided to go see it when we heard it was on tour. We both loved this touring production, & thought the cast were amazing.
I was so lucky to be at the very first public preview of the original west end cast. Since then, between London and the UK and Ireland tour I’ve now seen it 8 times. I remember after that first performance there was a lot of interest in how the British audience responded to KG3. I remember replying it didn’t seem surprising that we loved the characterisation - I pointed them towards many of us having grown up with things like Horrible History’s king George song (UK kids show that if I remember correctly was moved later in the schedules because of the adult following!) I agree with so much of what you’ve said - I love that each performer is allowed to bring their own take on a character and not have to do a carbon copy of the original Broadway cast. Amongst such an incredibly talented bunch I do think Billy Nevers shines. I agree I’d love to see his version of Burr.
I saw Hamilton in Birmingham last week and thought the cast were phenomenal, but I just couldn't get behind the actress who played Angelica, I thought she was very unclear and even knowing the lyrics well I struggled to deciper a lot of it! I'm surprised you said she played Tina as I've seen that in the West End and I can't picture her playing that role
I've seen Hamilton in the West End 5 times and I love it. Maya is amazing, I saw her as both Angelica and Eilza when she was a West End standby and she was probably the best Eliza I saw until Nathania the other week who was just as good. So happy she's now principal on the Tour.
May I remind you that you said when you wear a bucket hat for a show...it closes.! (I'm not worried) The original London production of 1776 was also very successful.
I love 1776 (and Hamilton). I'm not particularly interested in this time period more than any other but I think both musicals are really compelling, in different ways/ for largely different reasons.
Saw it for the first time in Manchester in January…..now understanding the storyline played the soundtrack relentlessly and will see in London tomorrow with tickets for the Uk Tour next year in Liverpool. Intrigued now being so familiar how tomorrow will be like.
I have yet to see a production of Hamilton live because I’m American and even tour tickets are absurdly expensive, but I absolutely love how boldly the nerdy-talent is on full display in the material.
Some of the big markets, like Dallas, have sky high pricing. I saw it in Tulsa and Wichita for around $170 in rows L and U. If you can find a venue where you can buy tickets directly, instead of from something like ticket Master, that's your best bet. Also, audiences in the Midwest are INCREDIBLE.
Your analysis is brilliant and what shines through is your love of the musical. My favourite characters are Eliza and King George III. Give me good snark anyday.
As if I joked to my boyfriend when we saw the tour in Birmingham, "Keep an eye out for Mickey Jo!" and then you really saw the show at Birmingham 😄 I'd seen the show in June 2018 in London and again in Birmingham this year (both for my birthday ❤) and they were equally fantastic. I'll be going to the Hamilton UK tour in 2025, but, if you saw things in Australia, well, that's got my attention because I'd just like to say, the Australian cartoon dog Bluey has become a phenomenan over here, with the extended special "The Sign" becoming one of my favourite things I've ever experienced, and today, here's where we get to the theatre thing, my carer took me to see Bluey's Big Play. I'm totally blind, and I can't believe I was put right at the front. This meant I could actually hear the movements on the stage! OK, sure, it's not Hamilton, but for a show primarily aimed at families with children, I left absolutely spellbound with one of the coolest things being what actually happens at the very beginning of the entire show. This thing starts about as different to Hamilton as you can get: a quiet start but it almost felt so intimate because it was one of the only times that the actual puppeteers voiced a character, and I could hear where they were coming from and then could hear the fabric and movement of these particular characters before the main event. I'm deliberately not saying what happens here in case anyone's going to see it, but it's not the start you might be expecting. Even during the show there were a couple of points where I heard some movement on stage and whilst I couldn't tell which character was the one doing the movement as by that point the vocal track is in the center, the fact I *could* hear something like that just had me in awe. There were also a couple of uses of surround sound which, whilst used for the same gag each time, were used in completely different positions in the theatre so there was that sense of place. Joff Bush's music was also incredible once again. It just so happens next year it'll be the same theatre I'll be seeing Hamilton at, and whilst I don't think we're at the front, I'm expecting an absolute specticle either way and I just think the music is going to be incredible. Whilst on tour, do you know if it's a band, or is it a backing, or both? Bluey seemed pre-recorded all the way but it had to be really, and still didn't fully diminish it at all. It was enough to convey things. Sadly, the performance did not have an audio described one but my carer did good, and even the other person next to me helped me out a bit especially during the theme tune as they let me know when the show version was happening, meaning I could join in with all the character call outs which was actually a lot of fun.
OhMiGod Hey Mickey. I went to go see Hamilton at the Birmingham Hippodrome and thought it was amazing. I did sadly find some issues with some of the vocals sadly and some of my friends also went to see it at the Hippodrome and said the exact same thing as I said. I am not sure if this is just due to the venue or due to only a couple of the casts vocals. Apart from that, I loved it! Shaq Taylor (Hamilton) is absolutely amazing. The whole flow of the show went very well. The part that stood out to me was the amazing lighting in the UK Tour of HAMILTON!!
Reassuring to hear someone had the same thoughts as me. I completely agree! I was questioning whether I was being overly critical or harsh because I do think the show is excellent.
@@rebeccalouisewillson Exactly. I am a highly critical person anyway and I will say anything if I feel it needed to be said. Did you go to see it at the Birmingham Hippodrome?
Was super lucky and managed to see this cast 8 times in Bristol as well as one time sat in with the band below. I've been telling anyone and everyone about Billy Nevers in this show. He's truly incredible. I was also able to see his Burr debut. Absolutely unbelievable. Go see the show if you're debating it, it's worth it for him alone.
The second time I saw Hamilton it was a US touring production right after the Covid reopening. The entire male cast with the exception of Hamilton himself was played by understudies and even chorus members due to an outbreak that night. So for us, even King George was non-white. The guy standing in for Jefferson was so much shorter than the regularly scheduled actors that the pockets on his coat were closer to his knees than his hips. The show still worked well. I didn't feel like we had a step down in quality from the first tour I saw and that one.
I saw it relatively early in the Birmingham run. Had the tickets for over a year, more than I'm generally comfortable paying for theatre but Hamilton is my thing, the soundtrack got me through Covid at the coalface of the NHS. I was wild about jefferson/lafayette and mulligan particularly, not convinced about the angelica vocal choices (but that's probably taste). Overall it was so worth it and I was pleased as punch to have the privilege of seeing it!
I saw it in Edinburgh and I was blown away by the staging, the choreo and the performances. absolutely incredible. I also LOVE that period of US history so it was manna for me. On a side note if anyone is interested in that period and John Adams in particular then there is the Tom Hanks produced series on his life on Sky Boxsets entitled funnily enough 'John Adams'. Hamilton does appear in it but he's not not a massive part but the serious is excellent and might give you more of a background
I'm going to see it in March 2025 in Southampton. Can't wait, although reading some comments here, I'm a bit worried that it will not be as outstanding as I'm anticipating.
I thought the touring production in Edinburgh was incredible! The Festival Theatre was a great venue for it and the cast were insanely talented. Preferred this experience to the West End show I saw in 2018 tbh Edit to add: The absolute highlight was in the dramatic beat of silence after Washington's "go home, Alexander", when the small child sitting behind me, who had been good as gold for the whole performance, let out a tiny, devastated "oh no" 😭😂
As an American, who does know many of the presidents in order. I can safely say that many Americans do not know who the second president was or many historical that you are assuming. :). - we don't have a cute song to learn in elementary school about the presence like you do for the Kings of England
@@MickeyJoTheatre when I saw titanic in theaters (because I am ancient) before the movie a lady leaned into her friend and goes “this boat sinks right?” And I have never before wanted to jokingly yell “SPOILERS” in my life
Got tickets to see Hamilton in Dublin got them the day after release and out of all 9 weeks all Thursday Friday and Saturday performances were completely sold out so I’m on a Monday night!
This is not the case with Birmingham at all - I booked really early, expecting a sell out and it hasn’t happened. It closes Saturday and there are still a fair few tickets for all performances. I’m wondering whether it’s down to the (relative) ease of getting down to London - or whether it’s a sign of the economic times. Maybe it’s the time of year too. It’s done well, no doubt - but deserves full houses! Anyway, I loved the show - Shaq Taylor was absolutely amazing as Hamilton, and for me, Charles Simmons was the standout of the supporting cast. What a voice! I left wishing Washington had more songs…Hamilton was right; he should never have resigned 😂
I've seen the show several times, in the US and once in London. The line about the Potomac is also changed, to propose it. It was interesting to see how well-liked the king was.
Saw Hamilton for the first time at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London; then twice on Broadway, and another two times with a touring company in Hawaii. All excellent productions but have a special fondness for the London viewing.
For Jason Robert Brown there’s the quote ‘Nobody needs to know’, (Say No to This), a reference to The Last Five Years. ‘Sit down John’ is a direct quote from 1776… ‘you’ve got to be carefully taught’ (My Shot) is a line from South Pacific, ‘I’m the model of a modern Major General’ is a Gilbert and Sullivan (Pirates of Penzance) ref, the 7/8 time signature in Meet Me Inside is a nod to Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Room Where it Happens is a nod to Kander and Ebb … ‘Go man go’ in Yorktown is a quote from ‘Cool’ (West Side Story)… I’ve probably missed a few!
I saw Hamilton on Broadway years ago. However I'm responding to some comments made about Audra McDonald coming to Broadway in GYPSY. Anyone who doesn't think Audra can sing outside of her operatic voice did not see her Tony award winning performance in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. I already have my tickets for Gypsy on Dec. 27th, 2024 and I'm sure it will be great show! 🤩🤩🤩
I’m curious what you’d think of the German show. I have started listening to the German cast recording even though I don’t know German and it’s amazing how many rhymes they’ve packed in it.
Unfortunately the tour is not coming to Belfast and I'm not able to make it to Dublin. I've seen the Disney+ version. Spectacular. Got the CD soundtrack. My only hesitation seeing it live would be... no Leslie Odom Jr. His Aaron Burr is just astonishing. But I'd still love to see it to really take in the whole staging and not just where the camera looks.
I saw it in Bristol and whilst there were many amazing things about the performers and production I came away feeling a bit disappointed. I think I did experience a lack of energy overall but that main issues were that the sound quality and balance wasn’t what I would expect from a production of this level. I was surprised that the diction of a few of the actors was quite lacking and felt that anyone who didn’t know the lyrics in advance might have missed some important plot points. It also didn’t help that there was leak making a loud dripping sound during some of the most poignant quiet moments in act 2! I’m glad if other people haven’t experienced these things. I do think it’s a wonderful show and I really wanted to love every moment!
I saw the show in Edinburgh and I absolutely agree about the energy and the diction issues. I went with two people who knew nothing about the show or the songs, and they really struggled to keep up with certain aspects of the story because they couldn't pick up what was being said. Even I struggled a bit, and I am familiar with the songs. We all came away discussing how amazing the show looked and how clever it was, but were sadly underwhelmed by the execution on the night.
Still only seen Hamilton on Disney plus the one time, ticket prices are ridiculous even on tours just isn’t my style of musical theatre music. But I do think it’s brilliant just not for me.
First got to see Hamilton on Disney+ bc wasn't able to travel to the places that had it or I couldn't get tickets if I went to NYC bc duh it's Hamilton then finally came to Australia in 2021 Sydney had it for a while but also it was during pandemic we had to shut down theatre & go into lockdown so it was shut for a couple months then reopened again then went to Melbourne, Brisbane & Auckland in NZ & then our cast went to few places in Asia & now it's back in Sydney for a last run which I'm fine with some people may not have seen it the first run but also annoyed bc it didn't go to Adelaide or Perth which sucks a lot of musicals touring usually at least do a small run in those cities but think it's now becoming a thing where musicians or theatre don't tour those places much now. I won't be seeing this newish cast unless I win lottery bc i had the chance to see it 4 times in the first run & id rather buy tickets to shows I haven't seen.
While I really do enjoy some of the music from the show, I waited a year to see this in the West End and while in my head I knew it was good I just can't feel it in m heart.
I’ve seen Hamilton twice on tour in the USA. The second time I was super excited because Jamael Westman was Alexander Hamilton. I was soo disappointed!! By the time the tour came to my home city of Los Angeles, CA Jamael Westman was sleep walking thru the performance. I thought maybe he had an off night. No my friend had seen the show two weeks late and had same complaint!! You DO NOT do that in LA! This Hollywood USA, believe it or not TV & Film people do go see musicals when they come to town. You want to be a performer in Los Angeles on stage if you’re in a touring company. You never know who is in the audience. I was so disappointed for him. Maybe he was home sick for the UK or something but you are not allowed to show it on stage, not if I’m pay $110 USD to see you sing and dance!!
Correction the quote is actually “I am so into you, I am so into you” what you quoted was Ariana Grande’s song “I’m so Into you, into you, into you” 😂😂
Hey Mickey, I think they may have removed the gasp. I recently saw Hamilton and the actress playing Eliza didn’t do the gasp. I was in the centre fifth row from the stage on the edge of my seat waiting for the gasp like a person waiting to receive life changing news.
Each Eliza gets to decide for herself what it means, so some play it smaller than others, and even different on different nights. The beauty of live theatre. What did you make of the performance without a gasp? At least in the UK and Ireland tour it was there on Wednesday. :)
@@CoachJenW to be totally honest we got was a strange expression that’s the person in the seat behind referred to as looking like she had a stomachache
I've seen the tour twice in Birmingham, once at a matinee and once at an evening performance, and unfortunately found both performances to fall very flat with me. The music, by virtue of it being incredible, still hit, but it felt like the actors had very little emotional energy or stakes in the story, especially Burr and Hamilton. When Burr was singing 'Wait For It', I don't think that was meant to be waiting for him to care. Burr seemed, at best, mildly annoyed by Hamilton, and Hamilton himself never portrayed anything other than the kind of interest I feel in a hobby that fades after a week. I was quite disappointed.
I personally will never agree on the direction of having king George stand for most of his number. “Oh it’s because the crown is heavy that’s why he can’t dance” give him a different crown then! The sign is so funny and I feel it needs a bigger dancing moment! Just standing there for me it’s not enough. I want camp.
Interesting take! I find that it works as an amazing juxtaposition to all of the quick movements from the Americans. It's as if George and the British are just too behind the times. Even his songs are based musically in an earlier period than the hip hop and r&b of the other characters. Also, maybe this is just from ignorance, but I think camp doesn't equal more movement? You can be incredibly camp and just stand still and move with your face, you know?
I've heard this from several people and wonder if that cast has been in the show too long. Many of them were the end of the Angelica tour before moving to Broadway.
I wouldn't pay anything to watch it.. A couple of good songs, but they are far better outside of the show..I can't stand Hip Hop or Rap. Not music at all.. Just my opinion.
I go much of the way towards explaining that in the video! And how geographically specific do you want to be here? Stories set within your own postcode?
@@MickeyJoTheatre don’t think it’s to do with seeing things within your postcode, I think it’s more that some people aren’t just interested in other countries. I didn’t go to Hamilton for the history I went for the unique music in it in comparison to traditional musical theatre.
I can't tell if you're kidding/trolling, but if not, do you truly never see any tv shows or movies or plays or read any books about any country other than your own? The themes in Hamilton transcend a country regardless, but the above is what you would need to do to be consistent with that philosophy. And that's very difficult for me to wrap my head around! Again, unless you were kidding. Haha.
@@MickeyJoTheatre I am talking about it in a more average person going to the theatre context, the people who occasionally go to see a show maybe once a year if that. It’s obviously not 100% about a country but there it’s centred in the middle of the American war of Independence and the start of a new country, and even include some of the history a B plot, what I’m saying is some people may not be interested in that part of it.
Hamilton is the proof that you Can release a pro shot and still run a World tour a uk tour on Broadway and west end
It’s possible… but I think the shows that can do that could probably be counted on the fingers of one hand!

@@jukesy1992so interesting to hear your perspective on this. Blueys big play is on in the Christmas holidays here.
I’m planning to see the tour in September and looking forward to seeing it
OhMiGod Hey Mickey.
@@LiamCoxSuperstar I saw it at Bristol Hippodrome
@@rebeccalouisewillson okay it is good to see that it wasn't because of the venue!
I saw a black actor cover King George in Kansas, and the audience LOVED HIM. LOVED HIM. It was so great, he was phenomenal, totally killed it.
My son is in 10th grade and his class is studying the play for literature. I’m so happy. I can quote every line.
Preferred this experience to the West End show I saw in 2018 tbh
Edit to add: The absolute highlight was in the dramatic beat of silence after Washington's "go home, Alexander", when the small child sitting behind me, who had been good as gold for the whole performance, let out a tiny, devastated "oh no" 😭😂
As an American, who does know many of the presidents in order. I can safely say that many Americans do not know who the second president was or many historical that you are assuming. :). - we don't have a cute song to learn in elementary school about the presence like you do for the Kings of England
Sam (Burr) is one of the nicest, loveliest guys I’ve ever met. I’m reeeeaaally hoping I can see him on tour 🤞
“And that is not a spoiler”
Because of history?
“Because he says so himself in the first few minutes of the show”
Oh…
Honestly both! 😂
MickeyJoTheatre, nice video dude
I wanna know the Jason Robert Brown and the other musical references in the show! I missed those
For Jason Robert Brown there’s the quote ‘Nobody needs to know’, (Say No to This), a reference to The Last Five Years.
However I'm responding to some comments made about
Audra McDonald coming to Broadway in GYPSY. Anyone who doesn't think Audra can sing outside of her
operatic voice did not see her Tony award winning performance in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill.
I already have my tickets for Gypsy on Dec. 27th, 2024 and I'm sure it will be great show!
🤩🤩🤩
Just a simple youtube of her singing "Down With Love" shows why she can do it
And im jealous of you having tickets
I’m curious what you’d think of the German show. I have started listening to the German cast recording even though I don’t know German and it’s amazing how many rhymes they’ve packed in it.
I was discussing just the other day - how well does it translate when the lyrics are this brilliant? I’m going to have to give it a listen!!
Disappointing audio always sucks. I’ve experienced similar things during brilliant tours. Just awful audio.
Daw HAMILTON ..at b.ham hippodrome a week ago ,was blown away great set brill song ..need youre hankie at end.
In the US; I saw the Broadway cast in NYC, and I saw the touring cast in New Orleans.
Traveling is better.
While I really do enjoy some of the music from the show, I waited a year to see this in the West End and while in my head I knew it was good I just can't feel it in m heart.
I love hamilton
Okay, seriously, how many bucket hats do you own???
In the UK, American accents (of course with the exception of George III)??? 🤔
Yep!
I haven’t seen Hamilton live yet those prices are crazy but I’ve seen the Disney pro shot a few times
Hi mickey jo. I was curious what parameters have to be met for you to cover Epic The Musical The Concept Album?
I have to say for all of hamiltons success, having just seen it again on Broadway, the cast feels bored.
It’s all about America, and I’m English so why go ?
I go much of the way towards explaining that in the video! And how geographically specific do you want to be here? Stories set within your own postcode?
@@MickeyJoTheatre don’t think it’s to do with seeing things within your postcode, I think it’s more that some people aren’t just interested in other countries. I didn’t go to Hamilton for the history I went for the unique music in it in comparison to traditional musical theatre.
@@rhodeisland9096 I don't think Hamilton is a musical about a country tbh
