The Warriors Offense In Game 2: Chess Not Checkers

  • The Warriors played a terrific half court offensive game, getting good performances from Curry and Klay Thompson. I breakdown how they adjusted to the Raptors game 1 defense with clever sets, playing DeMarcus Cousins more, and attacking the Raptors scheme. Draymond, NBA finals, Kawhi, Durant.

    Man this is something that casual fans and even many actual fans just don't seem to understand about the Warriors. When something isn't working, or a team's plan takes away something they do well, they can still make adjustments and kill u in so many different ways. This is what sets them apart from other great teams like the Rockets or Bucks. Once you take away their bread and butter they have no backup plan. And that isn't just about having star players, that is a team-wide effort from coach all the way down to the last player on the bench. Any fan of true basketball has to love watching the Warriors. Modern day Spurs 2.0

      So glad to hear someone else say they're the new Spurs. As a longtime GSW fan I've grown comfortable with their inevitable return to normalcy because with Kerr, Meyers, and Lacob running things they'll never be out of playoff contention. The winning culture and system will continue to attract respectable, quality veterans to compete for a title for years to come. They won't be back in the Finals every single June, but they will be on every contender's kill list each time due to their history, leadership, teamwork, and grit.

      They took what the Spurs did in 2014 and made it better by utilizing the strengths of Curry and Thompson while combining elements of motion, 7 seconds or less, and early offense to form the most formidable team we have ever seen.

      As a Bucks fan, I agree. I am hoping that with another year or more, Budenhozer can get his players to screen for each other, back cut, and change direction like GSW. Giannis will certainly draw attention from the defense, but the defense will clog the middle, rather than open up lanes.
      The Bucks need some credible offense other Giannis driving up the middle. Good observation.

    Things that don’t really show up in the box score. It all starts with the fear of Curry going off, so they are afraid to swap off him defensively.
    The same goes with floor spacing. His range makes it easier for everyone to score. Doesn’t show up on a box score.

    • @bartomiej9807
      @bartomiej9807 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a box score no, but when you see mediocre Curry stats and his +/- is high that means he does a lot off the ball. And screens, double defence on him all count to that (ussually you dont get assist off double, because you pass to most open player and he is passing for assist).
      This is why advanced stats put altogether (+/- alone isn't worth much) give you much clearer picture.

      @Cmindless No way man, he's still good with rotations. Sure the starters play more than usual, but they are much more rested than back then. You should have seen when the Warriors were under Mark Jackson. He played all the starters 45+ minutes per game in the REGULAR SEASON and throughout the playoffs too.

    The warriors are definitely the better team even without Durant. Raptors offense is basically isolation sets with kawhi or drive and kick. The warriors use everything. Play action, screens, pick n roll, back door cuts. Their offense is the best in the league and hard to defend.

    I wish they would run more pick-and-roll with Draymond and Boogie. If I'm Steve Kerr here on out. I'm running a lot of screen and roll with Steph Curry. With some pick and pop action.
    Now the screen help at 4:29 if Looney runs the free throw line that's open for a jump shot. But imagine them running this with Livingston or Draymond Green they're going to hit that shot.

Just pray to the basketball gods that KD, Klay, Dray, and Cousins leave after this season and try to make it back to the finals next year, I guess..." hahaha! Love your analysis man! On point!
